Sony's VAIO R series features a unique cooling system inside a funky
case. The hole through the middle of the case helps the R series run
coolly and quietly, and it gives this Media Center PC line a look that's all
its own. You can customize a system online or choose from a number of
preconfigured models, which are sold with or without a monitor. Prices
on the preconfigured models range from $1,699 to $2,949 as of October
2004. No matter which model you choose, you'll be getting a Pentium 4
processor between 3.0GHz and 3.6GHz, 512MB to 2GB of memory, and up to
1,600GB of storage space. All models include ATI's midrange Radeon
X600 XT graphics card and a double-layer DVD+/-RW drive. We reviewed one
of the fixed configuration models sans monitor, the $2,199
VAIO VCG-RA810G, which has more than enough power to run the
various multimedia apps that are included in Microsoft's Media Center
Edition 2004 OS. It's also one of the quietest PCs we've ever tested.
