Pros - quiet
- nice design
Cons It has major problems with the HDMI connection. The problem was not solved by Sony for more than a year. It doesn't have DVI or VGA connection. Way too expensive for what it offers.
Summary Don't waste your money like I did. For the same amount you can buy a much better Media Center or you can build it by yourself.
"2 Tragic flaws"on by lukimiguel
Pros Amazing system overall - perfect for the livingroom if not for the 2 flaws that render it useless
Cons Absurd "sleep' feature and terrible keyboard
Summary It pains me to rate this systm so low - but the truth is that no one should purchase this system. It is an enormous letdown and for the price there should be no letdowns. This is 2 steps shy of being the perfect livingroom entertainment pc, but the downside has me seriously considering returnig it while I can. On the good side - silent running, great selection of inputs and outputs and the bluray player make this a dream come true. Two features ruin this. The first (and I'm hoping it is fixable) is the miserable keyboard. I have a top end logitec bluetooth keyboard to replace it with, but I can't find the drives to allow me to make it compatible. I think this is a Vista issue, but regardless for the price, the keyboard should be top of the line and instead it is a terible frustration. As I typed this write up I actually had to turn the keyboard on and off 5 times to get it to reconnect with the computer. I'm about ready to throw it agains the wall.
The second, and more important flaw, is the 'sleep mode'. Anytime the computer goes into sleep mode, the only way to get the image back on the screen (I'm using a 46 Sony xbr3 as my screen) is to do a hard reboot. This renders the 'sleep mode' competely useless and means that you cannot really use it like a dvr or take advantage of the cable card feature, which defeats the whole purpose of buying this. I'm hoping that they will release some sort of a fix for this problem - if they don't they can try their luck at reselling mine - I have 10 days left before I can return it to the Sony store. If there is not indication that Sony intends to do something about this flaw I will certainly be done with this. It's a shame, because it could be an amazing system.
"Caveat emptor!"on by powerbutton
Pros Quiet, good looking, one of only a few cablecard boxes
Cons Sony really doesn't want you to use Blu-ray on your PC; no Vista Ultimate support
Summary This would be a great machine, were it not for Sony's conflicting media conglomerate agenda. One, it is not possible to play blu-ray content through component outputs or using the HDMI-DVI adapter. My projector supports DVI-D w/ HDCP, as specified by the requirements section, but I get the error "your display configuration does not support protected content playback". I can play blu-ray just fine through component output on my PS3 (albeit at 1080i, not p). Two, even though they include a solicitation to upgrade to Vista Ultimate in the box, if you upgrade to Ultimate, ugrading will clobber the sound drivers and the tv tuner, and Sony support will tell you to go screw yourself.
Neither of these limitations are indicated on the marketing materials or the warrantee posted online, which in fact lead consumers to believe the opposite. Both "limitations" are deliberate, are easily technically redressable, and are directly the result of the heavy-handed tactics of their media division. If Sony insists on treating their customers like criminals, while continuing to fraudulently represent the capabilities of their products, then they totally deserve get what's coming to them, i.e., rips of their blu-ray dvds up on torrents.
The only reason this gets a 2 instead of a 1, is because they were gracious about taking it back for a full credit.
Pros sony; great software from ms
Cons low wuality video res; machines crashes when put on suspend.
Summary I ahd to return it becuase the system is beaiscally not practical to use. every time you put the machine on "suspend"/sleep mode by pressing power button on the remote control, and then try to wake it up to watch TV,it wont display any video because of problems with Intel VIIV motherboard. I caleld Sony tech support and they confirmed this problem. basically, every time you want to turn the TV off, you have to shut down the computer and then boot it up when you want to watch any TV. very inconvineient to say the least, so I had to return it.
Pros its a sony
Cons its also a sony
Summary I used to use alot of there products in the past but the quality is down and the prices are still high
