"Buy At Your Own Risk!" on by ogman
Pros: The machine they built are "okay"
Cons: Industry worst product support
Summary: The computers built by Velocity-Micro are "okay" although they are no where near the quality you would expect from a custom builder. The wiring is average and they do NOT do anything special as far as setup or optimization as they claim they do. They certainly do not select the best components for your machine.
However, the worst part of a Velocity-Micro experience comes when you need support, and that is more frequent than you might expect. I purchased a machine and things started out badly from the beginning. I had a card reader that would not work (note they left the card reader out of the reviewed machine) and they never could figure out the problem. They blamed it on software and when that didn't work, they shrugged their shoulders. I eventually solved the problem myself.
Then, there was a problem with the machine failing to restart. I called talked to someone, and followed his suggestions for fixing the problem. That didn't work, so I called back. There was no record of my first call! Finally, they sent out a motherboard, but only the bare board. The tech arrived to install it and had no manual, no parts, no cables, etc. Later, they tried to blame the tech for the difficult install, even though it would have gone smoothly if they had sent ALL of the parts. I found this especially amazing since when I returned the sound card the machine came with, they demanded every single part and cable that it came with be sent back to them.
Bottom line: inept builders and lousy support. Stay away from Velocity-Micro! -
"Terrible! ! ! ! !" on by trnrdogs1
Pros: When it works, it's great.
Cons: Support is terrible.
Summary: If your are willing to be down 5-7 days at a time, then buy this. I've had the cooling fan go, 7 days from 1st call to technician coming out. He told me he felt it was the motherboard.
35 Days later the motherboard blew out, so they tell me. I contacted them a week ago today, 8/6/07 and am still waiting for the motherboard. This time I'll be down over a week. I would stay as far away from this company as possible.Updated
Well, 8 days after my first call I finally received the motherboard and the technician was here at 5:00PM. Outstanding, I thought..
Sal [the technician] said "I have some bad news for you" - they sent THE WRONG MOTHERBOARD! ! ! ! !
Another delivery is due here on Thursday 8/9/07, so I will have been totally down a total of 10 days.
If CNET would let me give a negative rating, I would! ! ! ! -
