"A Good Solid Custom PC"
Pros: Top of the line components and construction
Cons: You can't get them overnight
Summary: I finally made the move to a Custom PC and I'm never looking back. I ordered mine online, but they are also available in Best Buy.
Velocity Micro offers users, who consider their PC more than just an appliance, a modern system that has all the bells and whistles and they do it at price that is still less than many systems out there.
From its sleek aluminium case, its lighted fans and its well thought out internal wiring, the VM Vector GX is truly a good looking machine. The case, almost twice the size of my old tired Dell, looks great along with my new flat panel monitor in the family room.
The Asus nForce SLI 650i motherboard, combined with a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS video card and the all the Corsair DD2 RAM make this machine run fast and flawless. Web services such as YouTube and Netflix open and run almost instantly. DVD's and games start and run quite quickly, and there's plenty of expansion space behind those cool, aluminium bezels. Vista's auto tuning of the tcp/ip stack optimizes my new fiber optic connection on the fly, so I'm seeing great up and download times with this system. Vista Aero runs great with this configuration, and adds alot of features not seen with XP, so it may interest some users out there.
Ordering was fast and easy, although lead times can exceed a month. My estimated shipping date was not met, and I heard nothing from Velocity for 7 days. After calling the Concierge Desk, they advised me my machine had crashed during memory testing, but was shipped within a couple of days. A personal call from the VM tech who assembled and tested my machine to explain what happened was a cool touch, its just too bad that the Vista OS combined with the newest NVIDIA and Creative drivers made for an unstable machine. Card shortages, holidays, weekends and other issues ended up delaying the shipping of my machine, but VM kept me in touch via both e-mail and phone.
Overall, this is a great machine. If you plan on using it for some of the newest applications or games out there or your old PC is just getting worn out, you have to at least give it a look. There's plenty expansion space for the future, tech support was friendly and responsive and the machine just looks great.
