Simply the easiest Video Editing software in the worldby Offler - March 20, 2009
Pros: Ease of use. I bought it with a guarantee that if I don't prodduce a movie in 45 min I can have my money back. Well I admit it took me 50 min but after that it was a breeze.
Cons: It is an old software so does not have the lates format recognition and does not produce DVDs- you need a DVD producing software as separate but it is simply a question of putting your movies on it and then burning it off.
Review:
I have had it for 7 years and can't fault its its ease of use. It is just as if you had a piece of film in front of you and just cut away the bits you don't want and glue the rest together. Just llike in the old fashioned times. Way too much special effects for my use but I am no a Holiwood director and all the other editors which tell you that you can produce a Holywood quality movies are true- if you have 10 hours woth of movies and cut it down to 15 min spend 3 months getting the correct sound tracks etc, this one lets you sit down cut out the bits you don't like add some music in the back gorund and theresult is great. It takes as little time as can be for this sort of movie. That is all I want.

This program locked me out of copying anything to disk.by dollladie - February 2, 2008
Pros: The program works very well and is easy to use
Cons: Was unable to copy anything to disk after I installed it
Review:
The program itself is wonderful-easy to use and great results. The only proglem was it completely froze me out of saving anything to disk. Had to do system restore as uninstalling it did not clear the problem. I was fair and installed it twice to make sure that the program was causeing the problem. Wish I could return it.

Pros: Great sound effects & music; backgrounds & short videos
Cons: Poor quality animations.
Review:
Video Explosion Deluxe is a professional video editing software that provides transitions, sound effects, music (15 sec., 30 sec., and 60 sec.), video clips, and backgrounds. It is hard to find in stores since they stopped making it.
The animations that they provide are very poor quality, though. The package comes with 4 discs .

Simply the bestby teunis1 - March 15, 2007
Pros: Easy to learn, does it all
Cons: The packaged authoring software is sorely lacking.
Review:
A very good program for the price. There are definitely better programs out there but they cost a lot more and are much more difficult to learn. I've impressed quite a few people the result this program can put out. Its too bad ND partnered with Sonic for the authoring program. Sonic is also easy to use but has serious limitations and non-existant tech support. It's been several years since I contacted ND tech support but they were very quick to respond, willing to help and knowledgable.

lousy for writing DVDsby tech76 - December 19, 2006
Pros: It does a good job of making a short video file
Cons: does not compress and make a DVD without a lot of trouble
Review:
I bought the program to take the videos from my camcorder and put them on DVD with some Clean up and nice DVD menus.
First of all video deluxe does not have embedded dvd authoring. You need to take the work you do in video explosion. Save it to something then go to sonic mydvd and begin to work with the file again to get your chapters, menus etc. But to get MYDVD loaded onto your system you need to register and apply for another password to enable the sonic MYDVD program on your computer. Oh, guess what the serial number on your DVD doesn't show as valid so you need to contact video explosion to get that password. Also to save an mpeg2 file you need to apply for another password from video explosion. Really a tremendous bother. Especially when you email tech support and it takes days for them to respond. Not worth the effort.

Cons: DVD buring issues

I have used several many editing programs over the years, It is really hard to beat this software for doing home videos. It has many wipes, croping, zoom effects, it is fun to mix snap shots with video and sound, your slides, can be zoomed on, moving, rotating I have purchased other newer software since, but I still find myself going back to this software because it is so fast and easy to use and always gives me the correct results. DVD Authoring - forget it, just use some authoring software made for DVD Authoring. This is editing software anyway. It installs easy, I have never had dropped frames while transferring video from my camera, it just is a solid program done right the first time.

Pros: Easy to use & powerful
Cons: More sound files & video templates would be nice. Lack of support!
Review:
I have been using this software for over 2 years and have done some great things with it. I just called Nova and asked about an upgrade and was informed they would no longer carrier or be supporting this product moving forward. I asked who would and how I could continue to buy and get upgrades. I was told that they had no idea. I was left in the dark by NOVA Development. Anyone got any ideas?

Effects, ease of use, powerfulby greyskies - December 18, 2005
Pros: Amazing customizable effects, audio, titles
Cons: No integrated DVD burner
Review:
When I saw some of the user reviews for this product, I felt that I had to set the record straight. I have used Broderbund's Movie Shop Deluxe6, Pinnacle's Studio 9 and some other lower end products. This product is far and away the best bang for the buck. The others had their merits. Movie Shop uses a nice timeline with 10 individual isolated tracks that you can access to add music, pictures, etc without cluttering up the main movie. Studio had some great transitions, but the stuff was hidden sometimes 2 or 3 clicks and menu selections into the program. Text effects were minimal, and there were so many locked packages that you could buy, which is great, but you could end up spending big bucks on the bells and whistles and the interface is not completely intuitive.
Video Explosion is integrated with Sonic, long known for their Sound Forge program. So, with Video Explosion, you get the audio tweaks, as well as (I'm reading off the box here) 150+ transitions, 100+ special effects, 250+ ready to use video clips and it is all very customizable, from the font, to background and text transparency, movement around and across the screen and so much more.
I took two minutes of DV footage from my camera and monkeyed with it for 3 hours. WOW. I held the control key and swept my mouse across two pieces of footage. The program cross faded the clips sweetly, favoring one, then the other. A lot of the effects I recognized as extras that I could buy for the Studio software. As I mentioned, there is no integrated DVD burner, but the Sonic My DVD program is no frills and no problem to use. I rendered the clip in full NTSC format, and then burned to a DVD+ disk without issue. Oh, and the picture quality was perfect. Sharper than cable.
I mentioned ease of use. I will mention it again. There is no sharp learning curve to the basic uses of this program. The program operates in a Windows interface environment, including an 'Explorer' tab that gives you access to your HD with a click. Nice. I got the program at Frys, a huge store. If you do not have one in your city, I'm sorry. The price was good and on the box is a $30 dollar rebate. Grab this program if you like to experiment and play around with video. Oh, did I mention the green screen feature, or the picture in a picture? Yeah. Nice.

It is pretty good, a little better than the Microsoft that came with my PCby Snouter - April 29, 2005
Pros: Pretty easy to figure out and is stable
Cons: A lot of the features are worthless, and they don't even have some basic features, plus they try anything to avoid paying the rebate
Review:
I bought in January and it has worked very well. I sent in the Rebate with all the detailed info back then. After a few months I emailed asking where the Rebate was. The emails said they are looking into it. In early April, I called and they said next Friday. Another week went by and I called again and they said they would sent it out Monday. Another week went by and now they don't have me in their database as a customer!
I would pay more and get a legit product by a legit company.
Updated
This software does really work with the latest Sony HC-90 camcorder which is the best camcorder under $1000. It does not record the time laspe footage at all and the regular footage comes out incorrectly, nothing like the direct footage to TV.
What is funny is that the Windows Movie Maker works fine with the new Sony!
I think I might just delete Video Explosion off my PC, sell it on Ebay and get the Adobe product for effects above and beyond what the free Windows Movie Maker software provides.
What is comical is that there are only a small number of video clips provided with the Video Explosion CD, as they reference a particular unfinished website to pick up other "100's of other clips" which apparently don't exist.
Probably the worst software I have ever purchased.
Remember to check individual reviews, don't rely soley on "editors" of websites for info.

Great end resultby xswoopr - April 15, 2005
Pros: A cheap price for pro level quality
Cons: Not the most user friendly to jump into Clip editing must be done on the timeline
Review:
I found the capturing of analog video to be a gruelling ordeal. When I stopped at the end of a clip I wasn't able to simply fast-forward and hit record again. It would show an error and I had to stop capture and start again for each clip.
Also I think it would be helpful to allow you to edit clips before putting them on the timeline.
However once you have edited and added the excellent selection of transitions, the finished result which I burned on to DVD was superb. I was truly impressed!!

I wonder if CNET has actually burned a DVD using this software. No doubt everything said about the features, interface and power is true. Unfortunately, the DVD output is awful! Figures in motion have a trialing effect, appearing out of focus (almost like a strobe effect). I used the same video clips from my digital camcorder with ArcSoft, MGI, and WMM2 and got beautiful results when I burned a DVD. I wish any one of these programs had the features (editing capabilities)of Video Explosion. If you are going to burn DVD, get something else!

Fantastic for the Money!by - June 18, 2003

Review:
I would highly recommend Video Explosion. It bridges the gap between a professional NLE program and consumer products. I do a lot of home video and I also do some event work (like weddings). I have used a lot of different products ranging from terrible free ones that came packaged with hardware to professional level products like Adobe, Ulead MSP and Edition. It really seems like this product gives you much of the useful functionality of the high level products at a ridiculously cheap price. Naturally the high end products offer greater flexibility and control as well as an open architecture that allows you to use ?plug-in? accessory programs which VED does not. With that said, I could do most of my editing in VED if I chose to?it is that powerful! VED is actually a ?repackaging? of several other programs. The main one is the video editor which is really Sonic Foundry?s Video Factory 2 minus a few capabilities like chromakeying. Let?s face it, chromakeying (what the weatherman uses on TV) sounds impressive, but who really uses it for typical home video? The editor is, well simply great. It is stable and VERY flexible. It is not the simple storyboard editor that you may be used to from products like Moviestar and Movie Creator, but it a TON more powerful. I can do just about any editing task that I would do in a professional program in VED. The downside is that the cute manual doesn?t tell you all of the ways that you can edit with VED (I guess they didn?t want to be too complicated). With that said you can do all sorts of cuts, trims, rolling edits, etc. You can then go back and view your efforts in ?real time? to see if you want to change anything, Amazing at $70. VED will also do very fancy stuff like slow motion and fast motion. The book doesn?t tell you this, but their web site does. The other amazing thing the VED allows you do is to have fantastic control over your audio. Most new videographers think that it is all about fancy transitions, not true! Audio is one of the most important and most neglected aspect of consumer products. The editing engine was developed by sonicfoundry, which makes Sound Forge a professional audio editor. You can really peak and control your audio in VED, wonderful. Since VED is basically a repackaged Video Factory, you may ask ?why not just by Video Factory??. Good question. I think you get more real functionality with VED. First off they include a MPEG2 encoder which is an extra charge with Video Factory. This allows you to export to DVD. Also included is an older copy of Sonic?s ?My DVD.? This is a basic copy, but it does the job of authoring your MPEG2 files into a finished DVD complete with menus. I use a DVD-R drive and it works fine, but I think it will not work with a DVD+R drive. Still you get to ?upgrade? to the much more powerful My DVD 4.0 for a bargain price. When I registered my software they also gave me a free copy of ?Sure Thing? a nice CD/DVD label program. The other great thing about VED is that they give you a TON of content. You get sound effects, music, high quality video clips, animations and backgrounds (which you can use in My DVD). There is so much content that it is spread over 2 CDs and a DVD. Things to note: Video editing is incredibly demanding on your computer. If you have an old computer or one that has had its software modified by numerous games and other programs, it will probably crash when you try to run VED (or any other video program). If you are serious about video editing you should have a separate 7200 RPM drive where you just keep your video files. Drives are really cheap now and they are very easy to install. I use a 60 GB extra drive for very complicated projects and I have plenty of room. I think you could get by with 30-40 GB but the more the merrier when it comes to disk space. Also make sure that you have enough RAM, 64 MB just won?t cut it. Again, RAM is cheap so go for 256 MB or more. These simple and relatively inexpensive changes can turn a very frustrating editing experience into something fun. This advice is true for any NLE software, not just VED. In summary, VED is a fantastic package that will grow with you as your editing skills increase. It is powerful enough to do some professional level editing (like event video). It takes a little time to learn, but once you do it is very simple and logical. Sadly, the enclosed book doesn?t give you the information that you need to access all of the wonderful features that the editor has. Although it is a clone of Sonic?s Video Factory it does subtract a few esoteric features like blue screen but it gives you the addition of MPEG2 encoding for DVD?s as well as MyDVD for DVD authoring. In addition you get a TON of free content that ranges from music to high quality video clips and your getting this for about $70!

Doesn't support DVD+R Mediaby - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I bought this software based on the strong positive review in CNET, but I have had problems with this software since the day I bought it and have not been able to successfully burn a single DVD. First, the Sonic MyDVD software that comes bundled with Video Explosion product is Version 3.0. Everytime I tried to write to a DVD+R media, I kept getting an error message "Incompatible Media". From Sonic's tech support, I learnt that the product doesn't support DVD+R. Support for DVD+R media was first provided in MyDVD Version 3.5.1 (which they don't provide anymore) and Sonic tech support advised me to upgrade to Version 4.0.4 of Sonic MyDVD for another $50! I also have been unsucessful burning to a DVD+RW media. The MyDVD software completes the burning process and ejects the DVD -- when I try to reinsert the DVD to playback/view the movie, my entire computer freezes and need to do a hard reboot. Sonic tech support responded that my DVD hardware was not tested and cleared by Sonic. So I suggest you check Sonic's website to make sure that your DVD burner is supported before buying this product. And finally, I find it annoying that Video Explosion is not seamlessly integrated and I need to launch a separate software (MyDVD) to burn DVD's I'm using HP DVD Writer 300xi on a Dell Dimension 4100 PC running Windows ME.

I read all the comments, and ratings here at cnet, made my purchase. The program worked fine though it took me a hour to figure out you can step forward, and back using the arrow keys! (Didnt see that anywhere) So I made my video files from my Sony digital vdieo camera, and they looked good on the computer. I then burned them to DVD and they looked horrid. I had the exact same problem as "wsnaden". (thumbs down: on 04-Sep-2002 08:52:14 pm) After surfing for hours I came across a TEMPgec help page. It points out, now listen up, you must experiment with both settings when you choose the "Field Order": Bottom field first for digital and Top field first for anlog: but NOT always. It also said that there is no way to tell ahead of time which will work. They said if you get the "horizontal blind" problem, during fast movement, it is most likely this option! So after changing "Field Order" to "Top field first" it worked great. No syncing problem. (Default is bottom field first) Now remember this: it doesn't appear poorly on your computer, it's not interlaced. You can only tell after you watch your DVD on the TV. I did hear from Sonic MyDVD and they suggested this Field first change would work (after I had already figured it out) I never did hear from Video Explosion tech help. So: I hope you can save hours of tedious frustration by using my little "field order" help when making your mpeg-2 files! Cnet has helped me, with these real people reviews, now it is my to help.

The interface and features were much better than expected for the price. I was just disappointed with the loss of picture quality after a project was rendered and the second rate picture quality of the video clip library that was included with VED. I didn't have a problem with the product support. In fact the tech answered all of my questions concerning dropped frames along with other issues I found with the product. Moreover, I found the manual to be unneccesary, since I learned more with a trial and error approach. Overall I found it to be a good program for beginners before graduating to an profeesional program with more power and better picture quality. But you definately get more than you pay for. Overall I give it a 8 out of 10.

The only down side is that it doesn't yet support the newer SVCD format, which is ok since I was proficient enough to create a template so that I could create MPEG files that could be made into SVCD's with my CD Burner software. I'm still figuring out the many ways of creating transitions between clips, but hey - I could read the manual first if I really wanted!

With this system I have found Video Explosion Deluxe to be Stable, easy (if you understand programs like CoolAudio Edit or Acid), worth learning if you don't. After a little trial and error, even this was fun, I fell in love. I have used Pinacle, ULead, etc., and found that this simply rules. Especially if you are creative... I capture streaming videos with Camtasia, rip TV, DirectTV, and Tivo w/ATI Radeon 8500, and along with a few other methods I have devised, I am able to obtain tons of clips, ootage, etc., combine this with my personal video footage, add music and suddenly people are blown away. With the Radeon 8500, and gold monster cables I am able to use my 36" Sony TV as an additional monitor. Friends, clients and neighbors are blown away. I am too. At 79.00 you can't beat it. I built my system for around $1,400 and almost spent 400 on Vegas video, but this program does it all. By the time I outgrow it I am sure they will have a newer release to keep my happy.

I was told that they would look into it and call me back. That was three months ago. I sent E-mail, which was three months ago. I?m sure help is coming, as soon as they hire competent staff. If you have the time, lots of patience, and a little know-how, you will eventually produce a nice DVD?like I did. But you?re on your own. Forget support.

Video Explosion Deluxe is the best video creation program that I have used so far. Once you get the hang of it, it is very easy to use. I didn't like the fact that the Serial Number on the CD case was not sufficient to enable the MPEG-2 capability. When I used the online registration feature in the program, I kept getting a server error when trying to obtain the unlock code. Sonic could have just included the unlock code on the CD case. The whole process seemed like a waste of time. I would recommend that this program be used in a system with 512MB or more of memory, P4 processor and 2 hard drives. The final video should be created on the second hard drive. For the money, Video Explosion is an affordable way to create video.

I bought this because of C net rating and I am dissapointed. I was able to return it to the store. I took the advice of one disgruntled user of Pinnacle Studio 8 ( the worst program out there-don't work) and he recommended Sonic Foundry, Video Factory 2.0. Video Factory is the best program so far. I give it a 10 for the performance- feature, stability, tutorial, ease of use. The price is too cheap, average on the net is $70.00. So thanks to that guy who recommended this video Factory, I salute you and I am never been so happy making movies this Christmas Vacation.

After reading the 78% approval rating on this product, I decided to go for it. .... I should have paid more attention to the other 22%. ... My reason for wanting a video editing program was to collect TV shows , then edit out the commercials, and burn them to either VCD, or eventually DVD. .. I also bought a TV/Capture card and software from Creative Labs (Video Blaster Digital VCR) which works flawlessly. ... After recording to hard drive, the Creative software allows you to convert the proprietory clips to MPEG2 format, which still looks good. ... Then the fun begins! ... As soon as you import these clips to Video Explosion, the image gets all flattened out, and the audio sounds like Donald Duck on speed!! I have so far found no complete solution for this problem. ... Support....NO help. .. Like I said, .. I should have read the negatives more closely

One compliant is that it takes a little investment in time to learn how to capture videos and get things where you want them. Having said that, the software is excellent. I have tried most of the video programs out there. This is the closest to the best of the best. It has, however, one serious flaw. It will not import video captured with a capture card. The tech department told me to uninstall and reinstall the program and it work for one import. The second time I tried it, the video would not import. I took the same video and imported it into another video editing program flawless. The second complaint is with the manual. It is useless! There are some great and easy to use features but you have to use the online help (which is great) or figure it out yourself.

This application is just a pleasure to use. I've used many DV editing apps, and this is my favorate. It's easy to learn, and the interface is awsome. Anything and everythin that you can think of doing is a click or 2 away. Over 5GB of additional movie files was a huge plus. I paid 90.00 for this, and would have paid 200.00 for it. I havn't used the dvd authoring software that was included becaus I'm using something else at the moment.

My first effort after a small VCD turned into a mess. After spending a few long weeks putting together a project, the software wouldn't write to my DV camera! I finally imported the avi's into a free copy of Ulead that I got with my firewire card and that was able to write to the camera. I was also unable to create the mpeg-2 files as descibed by others. I plan on doing more video projects, but not with this software. If anyone wants a copy - cheap, drop me a line.

I tried a good deal of video editing software and this is the best one so far. It doesn't crash and works fine with my DV cam. It is loaded with a lot of well designed feature. The only thing it lacks is support for SVCD. I worked around it by creating a custom template and output the file to the hard disk and burn the file to CD with VCDEasy.

overall a strong product but mpeg2 support needs workby - October 7, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I have found VED to be a versatile and powerful tool that offers fine grained creative control, and as a video novice I was able to capture video from my Panasonic DV-852 and begin making cool productions almost immediately. I would take issue with anyone who claims the interface is too complicated. It is powerful and intuitive though may be too much for someone who needs a hand-held wizard-driven experience. Having said that, there is a fly in the ointment however, and that is the mpeg2/DVD support which is surprisingly buggy, considering the overall quality and well-thought out design of the capture and editing portions of the application. For example, if you use a video FX filter, such as color saturation, VED will render fine to AVI, but try to output to mpeg2 and you get unacceptable color distortion and artifacts, that makes the tool essentially useless in this mode. I called tech support about this, and got them to reproduce the problem. He promised to forward the bug to their programming staff, but doubted there would be a fix anytime soon. Bottom line: VED is a great program if you're rendering to AVI or Windows media files, but wait for the next service pack or buy a real DVD authoring package if you want to make DVDs.

more than you paid forby - October 2, 2002

I produced several videos using VED and had a blast. The tutorials are great, takes you step by step (much better than trying to read a manual). Those complaining about difficulty learning the program should take the time to try the tutorials, they really did an excellent job w/ it that I didn't even need to read the manual (wished more programs came w/ such great step by step tutorials). Everyone who saw my productions were impressed. I did have problems with "memory leak" as at times an error message pops up, but then again, I was running the program off an ancient 466 Celeron PC. I also wish there was a way to increase the quality of the mpg videos, but that is not the program's fault, it's that mpg is a (very)compressed format. Rendering a 5 minute clip with 60+ photos & audio in avi format (better quality than mpg) does not fit on a CD unfortunately. I produced a tribute to a dear friend who recently passed away using scanned photos of her and made a copy (on CD) for all my friends who came to our little reunion. CDs are cheap now so it would have been nice to be able to fit something w/ better quality than mpg on a CD to give away (DVD for that many people would have costed an arm & leg). Overall, I think it's a great program & lots of fun to work with and does an incredible amount for the price!

I installed the program, ran fairly quickly through the tuturial, and was absolutely astonished with the versatility of this program. It operates on a simple premise, and the effects you can produce are amazingly professional. Some of the finer details take a bit of time to absorb, but it's fun experimenting. And the result, whether it's fed back to the video camera or produced as a file, are very professional.

NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME...by - September 4, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
At first glance, an impressive product. It includes and easy-to-use interface that makes creating a movie easy with a variety of effects and transitions. However, there are a number of shortcomings that make this version not ready for prime time. For example, the manual sucks. It basically lists all the menu choices, but doesn't really explain why or when you would want to choose them. How about the My DVD software that's included but doesn't work until you do the 80 MEGABYTE download to the latest version. The included sample media clips, which are supposed to be used in your videos are actually very limited. Many have words and titles in them that preclude their use except only in the most specific types of movies. There is no SIMPLE way to perform basic text animation like a crawl, etc. without getting creative Simple programs like MGI Video Wave even can do this. My biggest complaint, however, has to do with the QUALITY of the final product. If you read the box, you are lead to believe that the product can be used to create "Hollywood-like" movies and put them on your own DVD's. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Apparently there is a KNOWN bug/feature/design flaw in VED that prevents it from handling interlacing correctly on movies that have some or medium to fast motion in them, when you try to render your final movie as an MPEG2 file. This results in jerky movement and moving objects appearing to flash and/or have a "mini-blind" effect to them as every other line of the image is skewed to the left or right of the line above. Well this wouldn't be a problem except that if I want to make a DVD I NEED to be able to render in MPEG2!!!! Maybe it's the Codec (written by Ligos) or just some other bad programming, but the tech rep at Nova quite candidly told me that they didn't write the original program and the guy that did write it won't fix it for them now, but that the Nova president was going to call this guy and "ask" him to fix it. If you want to make nice home movies with neat transitions and save them as AVI files, then this program is a good choice. If you want to make high-quality DVD's from your movies, STEER CLEAR OF THIS ONE.

Excellent stability/functionality; low price.by - August 26, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
After trying several other higher-priced editors, with disappointing results, I am now a devoted fan of VED: it has been 100% stable (under WinXP), and offers a surprising amount of functionality, especially for this low price. It's capture (from a Sony Digital8 camera), editing, and export back out to Digital8 or MPEG2 was flawless. The MPEG2 output (later burned into DVD movie format) was first class. My only minor disappointment has been balky "slider" controls on the "video filter" adjustments, but I'll gladly live with this in order to get the otherwise exceptional operational stability.
