Squeezebox Plus Audioengine--Perfect Together
Pros: Great Sound, Thousands of Radio Stations
Cons: Akward User Interface
Best of all I plugged the Squeezebox into a pair of powered Audioengine A5's. The sound is amazing and I now have the best sounding clock radio on the planet and perhaps the most expensive one too. But ah, it is worth the price. It blows away the Boze, Cambridge Audio Works and every other high-end clock radio in both audio quality and variety of content. This morning I woke up to a Reggae station direct from Jamaica. Last night I feel asleep to a Beatles station from London.

I love wireless Squeezebox.
Pros: Design, sound quality, less wall drilling
Cons: Prepare to buy bigger hard drive
I ruled out media centers completely because my listening room doesn?t have a TV, and even if it did, I would hate to turn it on every time I need to choose an album to play. Then I discovered Squeezebox, placed an order for the wireless version ($300), and my world changed forever.
Hardware installation was trivial. Squeezebox woke up and guided me through the process. The hardest part of the installation was entering 32-digit Wi-Fi network security key using the remote control (a step most people won?t need). SlimServer software seems to be put together well and it also installed without a problem. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to scan my music files, but in less than thirty minutes after I opened the box, I was listening to the music from my computer, wirelessly, via stereo speakers in my listening room.
The sound quality seems to be extremely good for the device in this price point. It is only slightly inferior to the sound of my CD player which is three times as expensive. I am sure most people won?t hear any difference at all, especially when it comes to compressed music.
SlimServer software does an excellent job streaming music, but it is not that good in browsing and searching it. I downloaded excellent third party software that can control Squeezebox (it?s called OrangeCD Suite) and use it for richer interface, more convenient search and management of music collection.
I salvaged the oldest CDs in my music collection that were badly scratched and could die any moment. Then I converted hundreds of archive CDs back to digital files. Soon I discovered that I like to browse the collection from the sofa so much, that I began ripping some of my favorite albums just so they are always at hand.
It seems there is no turning back, CDs are outdated.

easy to use
Pros: easy setup, small, lots of connection options
Cons: remote and software take a little getting used to; too many choices?
The device itself is a snap to set up. Plug it in, connect it to the audio receiver, follow the simple setup commands on the unit, and voila. Just remember if you are tuning in internet radio stations you still have to push the "play" button to start the stream playing. Took me a little troubleshooting time before I figured that one out. If you have set up a wireless network in your home connecting the SB is painless. I just use MAC address filtering and no WEP or WPA, but it supports both of those security options.
I primarily got it to listen to internet radio over my home theater stereo system. The device is preset to many selections from around the world. It also has radioio stations set and you can signup for Live365 radio service and Pandora and send those streams to it as well. And you can also tune in any radio stream available online vis its URL and the device will play those as well. If anything there may be too many choices. I spent a lot of time last night channel surfing radio stations. I suppose eventually I will settle on a few favorites.
As with any device like this I think it does take some time to get used to its menu system and how it arranges information. Once you play around with it for a while though it all seems to make sense.
They also have excellent user forums on the SlimDevices website for help with any issues and they also have telephone support that I have not used.
After considering the options and seeing all of the rave reviews of this device I forked over my $300 and I am not in any way disappointed. It accomplishes what I wanted it to do with a minimum of set up work.

Fabulous - the device I have been waiting for!
Pros: Easy to set up. Web interface. Pandora support, Radioio support, SqueezeNetwork
Cons: Time/Date display could be bigger.
The SlimServer sofware is pretty good. It needs some more sophisticated random playlist options, but other than that, it works great. One of the things that I appreciate most is that I can run SlimServer on one machine, but control it from any other machine in the house through the Web interface.
I have been salivating over the Squeezebox for about 6 months and now that I have one, it is even better than I had imagined. If you love streaming audio and Internet radio, then this is the device for you.

Get this machine!
Pros: This device is the future, today! Feature packed, good controls, easy to read and adjustable screen. Good instruction manual and great phone support.
Cons: None that I can tell so far. The remote is a bit plain-jane considering the device itself is so advanced.

My first choice, but I can't get slimserver to work on my computer even with the help of support.
Pros: Better display than Roku. Interfaces better with slimserver.
Cons: Not plug-and-play by any means. My Roku worked with slimserver but I can't get the squeezebox to work.

Works like a Champ!
Pros: Easy to setup, Great sound quality, Can access Slim Server over http
Cons: Small issue with iTunes playlists
Our entertainment center in our great room on the main level of our house has a Harmon Kardon (HK) receiver and CD player that is also connected to the A-Bus in the basement so we can play CD's throughout our house. That is also where we have our Cable Modem and wireless router. Our computer that has all of our MP3's is in a room upstairs. So, we needed the ability to wirelessly access the music on this PC and run it from our setup in our Great Room.
Enter Squeezebox. I read the reviews on CNET and also read everything that I could on the Slim Devices web site and anywhere else for over a year. I told my wife about it and she bought it for me for Fathers Day this year. Monday morning my wife calls me and asks if she can go ahead and install it. Ten minutes later she calls me to tell me it is working! She plugged it into the HK and we have music playing all over the house.
We did have a small issue with it showing the iTunes playlist in the SlimServer software but they showed no songs when selected. I went to the Forums on the Slim Devices web site and found a quick resolution.
The sound quality is very good using the basic analog connection (HK does not have digital inputs, too old). I am sure it will sound even better when I retire the HK for a receiver with digital inputs. The best thing about this player is I can access the Slim Server software over HTTP. We have a laptop in our kitchen with a wireless connection so I have no need for the remote control. I can play any song or playlist from anywhere in our house or backyard.
I really liked the Sonos with the sweet remote control but I had a hard time justifying the cost. CNET does not make it very easy to find the Squeezebox review on this site. If you search for Digital Audio Receiver it does not even show up in the result list.
The Squeezebox has been the perfect device for us. Bye bye CD player! Daddy's got a Squeezebox!

The Best Audio Quality with Great Features
Pros: Easy set up, great sound, sexy looks, great functionality
Cons: Lame remote, higher price
1 - The sound produced by the Squeezebox is fantastic. I have a very high end stereo that one of my Squeezeboxes is hooked up to - and it sounds great
2 - The remote does stink - buttons are too small and not well differentiated - I hope they come out with a better remote (given the price)...
3 - This is expensive and Apple is on their heels with their own audio (and video) distribution solutions
4 - I have several units and I sync them around the house for parties - great feature - but sometimes, the units get a little out of synce (creating flanging effect across audio zones). Solution is to stop the music and restart (not great).
5 - Pandora was final feature that made me purchase my two units. It is a great way to listen to music. There is a free on line demos for those of you not familiar - if you love music - you will love Pandora.
6 - Use the wired connection if you can - bandwidth is good for audio quality and stability. I have wireless units but decided to hook them up to CAT5 anyway - less hassle.
Overall - despite the above nit picks in the above list - this is a great product.
One final point - customer service (by e-mail) is personalized, responsive and very useful - amazing (perhaps why the price is a bit higher than the competition).

The best audio streamer on the market.
Pros: Beautiful design. Wireless mode is reliable. Amazing features.
Cons: Remote control doesn't look as good as the Squeezbox itself
This product will make sense for anyone who has a lot of music files (mp3 and others) on their hard drive and like the convenience of browsing through their entire collection and play music on their living room's stereo for instance.
That is exactly my case. Since I owned an iPod, I've been ripping my entire CD collection on my hard drive. I have over 600 mp3 files stored on my computer. My CD collection takes a lot of space and it would always take some time to find a particular CD, even though I am pretty well-organized. So at some point, I decided it was worth purchasing an audio streamer to play music from my computer directly to my receiver in the living room.
It was also making sense because my computer and my living room being on two different floors, I would either have easy access to my entire mp3 collection but have to play them on poor computer's speakers OR play music on my receiver which offers a good sound quality but I would be limited to access one CD at a time.
So I purchased the Squeezbox 3 directly from the Slim Devices' website. The order was easy and I received the device within 3 days.
First of all, it is a beautiful unit (I picked the black Wireless one). The pictures talk for themselves. It looks good near any hi-fi component so you don't have to hide it. On the contrary, it's almost something you want your guests to see. They always wonder what that is and what it does.
Setup is fast and easy. You only need to install a little program on your computer that will act as a server. It browses your entire music collection on your hard drive and communicated with the Squeezbox.
Within a few minutes, I was able to browse my computer MP3s from my living room and play anything I wanted. The navigation is extremely simple. Like an iPod, you can play a song by artist, by genre, by year etc... And just shuffle play.
But the Squeezebox is so much more than an audio streamer and this is where it makes all the difference with the competition.
They are too many features to list them all here but theses are the ones I really enjoy:
1) You can play some "ambiance" sounds, like ocean waves or storm effects, and you can set the Squeezebox to act as an alarm clock and play these sounds when it goes off.
2) You have access to hundreds of free Internet radios. This is just amazing!
3) The Squeezebox can display news (RSS feeds)
4) It also comes with a free 90-day trial to Pandora (also know as the Music Genome Project). The idea is that you select a song or an artist and Pandora will create a playlist of similar songs and play them one after each other. You have the option of skipping a song if you don't like it and Pandora will modify the playlist based on your input. Pretty cool uh?
5) Finally, I like the fact that you can just go on the Slim Devices webpage and download new features. You can also write your own code to add functionalities but this is for advanced users.
Of course, one of the cons is that the Squeezebox requires your computer to be ON if you want to play anything from your hard drive. I wonder if there is a way to upload music on some HTTP server and have the Squeezbox access them from there.
Note that Internet radios and Pandora, as well as the cool sound effects, don't require your computer to be ON.
Also, I wonder if the device would work with an external Network Hard Drive. I have figured this out yet but that would be a pretty nice feature.
The only thing that I find a little disappointing is the remote control itself, cosmetically speaking only. The Squeezebox has a slim high-tech design and the remote bulky and pretty ugly. I wish they had made something classier with the remote.

SIMPLY THE BEST AUDIO STREAMER AVAILABLE
Pros: Plays any type of digital audio file possible. Open source technology provides customization and flexibility. Simple menus make playing music incredibly easy. Sound is SUPERB, STUNNING visuals!
Cons: After owning 4 generations of this product, I can't complain.
After thinking some more, I decided it is still worth a 10.
