Squeezebox lets you easily access any song in your music collection, from any room in your home. It delivers pure digital sound without the hassle of shuffling through CDs. From its simple remote control, Squeezebox gives instant access to any music on your computer, plus hundreds of crystal-clear Internet radio stations. Squeezebox features a high fidelity 24-bit Burr-Brown DAC, legendary in the audiophile community for their clean output and ultra-low distortion characteristics. Digital optical, coax, and analog connectors can plug into any home theater, stereo or amplified speakers. With built-in support for true 802.11g and advanced lossless compression technologies, you can locate your Squeezebox up to three times further from your wireless access point. Also, Squeezebox can serve as a wireless bridge, allowing other network-ready devices to connect through its Ethernet port. It takes just a few minutes to install: simply load SlimServer, the powerful and free Open Source software, onto your computer and connect the player to your network. Squeezebox automatically configures itself and is ready to use. With support for MP3, WMA, FLAC, AAC, WAV, and Ogg Vorbis, Squeezebox handles all of today's leading and emerging formats without sacrificing audio quality. With built-in support for lossless compression technology (FLAC) and "pure software" SlimDSP architecture, your hardware investment is protected against technical obsolescence. Broadcast the same music or independent streams to 2, 10 or even 20 rooms by adding Squeezebox players to stereos in each location. Squeezebox displays animations that move to the beat of your music. The bright and easy-to-read vacuum fluorescent display lets you see your music, not just hear it. Browse and search 100, 000 song libraries in seconds to find the perfect song for the perfect moment. Squeezebox's user-friendly interface allows you to browse quickly through your whole music collection via custom remote controls or a web browser. Create instant music mixes using built-in support for third-party tools, including MusicMagic and Moodlogic.

Great Product

Pros: Easy to use; Good sound

Cons: A bit expensive

Review: I love this device. The software is easy to set up and quickly identifies all the music on the 'server' machine. Remote control is easy to use and the Squeezebox easy to read. I definitely would recommend. I've had no trouble with a wireless connection (About 60 feet and 2 walls away). By the way, I've had several people try to tell me the Apple's Airport can do the same thing. The airport can play music but does not have a screen and no remote.

Squeezebox Plus Audioengine--Perfect Together

Pros: Great Sound, Thousands of Radio Stations

Cons: Akward User Interface

Review: I purchased the Squeezebox not knowing exactly what to expect. I opened up the box, plugged it in and wow. I was able to get thousands of internet radio stations from all over the world as well as the several thousands songs residing in my Itunes. In addition, there is a robust user community which has been very active creating plugins and mods to the open source user interface. I was able to find plugins for making the Squeezebox into an alarm clock, even converting the remote into a snooze bar. Now my stock quotes scroll across the screen at the end of the day after the market closes.

Best of all I plugged the Squeezebox into a pair of powered Audioengine A5's. The sound is amazing and I now have the best sounding clock radio on the planet and perhaps the most expensive one too. But ah, it is worth the price. It blows away the Boze, Cambridge Audio Works and every other high-end clock radio in both audio quality and variety of content. This morning I woke up to a Reggae station direct from Jamaica. Last night I feel asleep to a Beatles station from London.

I love wireless Squeezebox.

Pros: Design, sound quality, less wall drilling

Cons: Prepare to buy bigger hard drive

Review: I am a music fan and avid music collector for most of my life. Most of my 4,000 album collection still consists of audio CDs, and I use my stereo system to listen to music whenever I can. Browsing the web, I often find some digital sound clips that are worth listening ? e.g. song previews, artist interviews, or download-only releases. Before Squeezebox, it was pain to give these sound bits a listen, I either had to listen via headphones connected to the PC, via cheap computer speakers, or burn a CD and play it in the CD player connected to my stereo. My computer is three walls away from listening room, so running a wire from the computer to stereo was not an option. I quickly grew tired of burning CDs and started looking for better solution.

I ruled out media centers completely because my listening room doesn?t have a TV, and even if it did, I would hate to turn it on every time I need to choose an album to play. Then I discovered Squeezebox, placed an order for the wireless version ($300), and my world changed forever.

Hardware installation was trivial. Squeezebox woke up and guided me through the process. The hardest part of the installation was entering 32-digit Wi-Fi network security key using the remote control (a step most people won?t need). SlimServer software seems to be put together well and it also installed without a problem. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to scan my music files, but in less than thirty minutes after I opened the box, I was listening to the music from my computer, wirelessly, via stereo speakers in my listening room.

The sound quality seems to be extremely good for the device in this price point. It is only slightly inferior to the sound of my CD player which is three times as expensive. I am sure most people won?t hear any difference at all, especially when it comes to compressed music.

SlimServer software does an excellent job streaming music, but it is not that good in browsing and searching it. I downloaded excellent third party software that can control Squeezebox (it?s called OrangeCD Suite) and use it for richer interface, more convenient search and management of music collection.

I salvaged the oldest CDs in my music collection that were badly scratched and could die any moment. Then I converted hundreds of archive CDs back to digital files. Soon I discovered that I like to browse the collection from the sofa so much, that I began ripping some of my favorite albums just so they are always at hand.

It seems there is no turning back, CDs are outdated.

easy to use

Pros: easy setup, small, lots of connection options

Cons: remote and software take a little getting used to; too many choices?

Review: This is a great little device that works as advertised. I downloaded the slimserver software and used it to gather all of my music files together and also used the "softsqueeze" simulator to get a feel for how the device works before it actually arrived at my house. I think this was a valuable expereince.

The device itself is a snap to set up. Plug it in, connect it to the audio receiver, follow the simple setup commands on the unit, and voila. Just remember if you are tuning in internet radio stations you still have to push the "play" button to start the stream playing. Took me a little troubleshooting time before I figured that one out. If you have set up a wireless network in your home connecting the SB is painless. I just use MAC address filtering and no WEP or WPA, but it supports both of those security options.

I primarily got it to listen to internet radio over my home theater stereo system. The device is preset to many selections from around the world. It also has radioio stations set and you can signup for Live365 radio service and Pandora and send those streams to it as well. And you can also tune in any radio stream available online vis its URL and the device will play those as well. If anything there may be too many choices. I spent a lot of time last night channel surfing radio stations. I suppose eventually I will settle on a few favorites.

As with any device like this I think it does take some time to get used to its menu system and how it arranges information. Once you play around with it for a while though it all seems to make sense.

They also have excellent user forums on the SlimDevices website for help with any issues and they also have telephone support that I have not used.

After considering the options and seeing all of the rave reviews of this device I forked over my $300 and I am not in any way disappointed. It accomplishes what I wanted it to do with a minimum of set up work.

Fabulous - the device I have been waiting for!

Pros: Easy to set up. Web interface. Pandora support, Radioio support, SqueezeNetwork

Cons: Time/Date display could be bigger.

Review: I just received my Squeezebox and I love it. It set up without a hitch. I needed to upgrade the firmware, which it did automatically (you need to install the SlimServer software first). Then it was simple to install on my wireless network - entering the WEP keys was a breeze. I gave it my passwords for Radioio, Pandora and the other music services, so that I have access to all of the Internet music that I listened to on my PC.

The SlimServer sofware is pretty good. It needs some more sophisticated random playlist options, but other than that, it works great. One of the things that I appreciate most is that I can run SlimServer on one machine, but control it from any other machine in the house through the Web interface.

I have been salivating over the Squeezebox for about 6 months and now that I have one, it is even better than I had imagined. If you love streaming audio and Internet radio, then this is the device for you.

Get this machine!

Pros: This device is the future, today! Feature packed, good controls, easy to read and adjustable screen. Good instruction manual and great phone support.

Cons: None that I can tell so far. The remote is a bit plain-jane considering the device itself is so advanced.

Review: I read lots of reviews to make sure I made the right choice. I even went shopping in Best Buy to look at them in person. Asking for a Squeezebox in the store just got me lots of strange looks. One guy finally knew what I was talking about and showed me a Roku Soundbridge. I was so unimpressed with the packaging alone, I left it in the store. I ordered my wireless Squeezebox online from SlimDevices directly. It arrived in just a few days. Packaging was much more impressive (it even included a handy cleaning cloth) and instructions were easy. I feared the wireless option I had to go with (my PC is upstairs and my main stereo is downstairs) would be a problem, but I can assure you - it's not. It buffers perfectly and fast (I have a D-Link DI-624 802.11g). I've not even had a single hickup from this thing. Between SlimServer when the PC is on, and the direct Internet options (including Pandora) when your PC is off (or on) - this thing rocks! You'll wonder how you ever enjoyed music before. You'll finally be free from your PC with music all over your house.

My first choice, but I can't get slimserver to work on my computer even with the help of support.

Pros: Better display than Roku. Interfaces better with slimserver.

Cons: Not plug-and-play by any means. My Roku worked with slimserver but I can't get the squeezebox to work.

Works like a Champ!

Pros: Easy to setup, Great sound quality, Can access Slim Server over http

Cons: Small issue with iTunes playlists

Review: Allow me to provide a little background at first. We ripped all of our CD's using iTunes (almost 7000 songs @192K) over a year ago. We are running a Multi Zone Denon receiver in our entertainment center in our basement. We have a Russound A-H4 A-Bus connected to the Denon that allows us to run a 4 zone music system through our house.

Our entertainment center in our great room on the main level of our house has a Harmon Kardon (HK) receiver and CD player that is also connected to the A-Bus in the basement so we can play CD's throughout our house. That is also where we have our Cable Modem and wireless router. Our computer that has all of our MP3's is in a room upstairs. So, we needed the ability to wirelessly access the music on this PC and run it from our setup in our Great Room.

Enter Squeezebox. I read the reviews on CNET and also read everything that I could on the Slim Devices web site and anywhere else for over a year. I told my wife about it and she bought it for me for Fathers Day this year. Monday morning my wife calls me and asks if she can go ahead and install it. Ten minutes later she calls me to tell me it is working! She plugged it into the HK and we have music playing all over the house.

We did have a small issue with it showing the iTunes playlist in the SlimServer software but they showed no songs when selected. I went to the Forums on the Slim Devices web site and found a quick resolution.

The sound quality is very good using the basic analog connection (HK does not have digital inputs, too old). I am sure it will sound even better when I retire the HK for a receiver with digital inputs. The best thing about this player is I can access the Slim Server software over HTTP. We have a laptop in our kitchen with a wireless connection so I have no need for the remote control. I can play any song or playlist from anywhere in our house or backyard.

I really liked the Sonos with the sweet remote control but I had a hard time justifying the cost. CNET does not make it very easy to find the Squeezebox review on this site. If you search for Digital Audio Receiver it does not even show up in the result list.

The Squeezebox has been the perfect device for us. Bye bye CD player! Daddy's got a Squeezebox!

The Best Audio Quality with Great Features

Pros: Easy set up, great sound, sexy looks, great functionality

Cons: Lame remote, higher price

Review: I do not have a lot to add to the other reviews except for the following:

1 - The sound produced by the Squeezebox is fantastic. I have a very high end stereo that one of my Squeezeboxes is hooked up to - and it sounds great

2 - The remote does stink - buttons are too small and not well differentiated - I hope they come out with a better remote (given the price)...

3 - This is expensive and Apple is on their heels with their own audio (and video) distribution solutions

4 - I have several units and I sync them around the house for parties - great feature - but sometimes, the units get a little out of synce (creating flanging effect across audio zones). Solution is to stop the music and restart (not great).

5 - Pandora was final feature that made me purchase my two units. It is a great way to listen to music. There is a free on line demos for those of you not familiar - if you love music - you will love Pandora.

6 - Use the wired connection if you can - bandwidth is good for audio quality and stability. I have wireless units but decided to hook them up to CAT5 anyway - less hassle.

Overall - despite the above nit picks in the above list - this is a great product.

One final point - customer service (by e-mail) is personalized, responsive and very useful - amazing (perhaps why the price is a bit higher than the competition).

Fantastic!

Pros: Wonderful sound, well integrated

Cons: None. Really NONE!

Review: I have two wired on 100BT ethernet, several on HomePlug and one wireless. Audio output is Coax in the living room, Optical in the Computerroom and stero RCA into power amps in the Bedroom, Kitchen, Sewing room Conservatory and the two BATHrooms. Software synchronizes them well. Sound quality is about perfect using 192Kbps MP3. The bedroom is perfectly quiet at night with the SlimP3 (no humm!), set to blank the screen when turned off with sleep mode (and the whole house goes off!!!, no more getting up to turn off the music downstairs!). The rest of my SlimP3s displays local weather when powered off, so in the morning I am prepared. I've used this version since it came out. Gave one to my son and encouraged three friends to buy some. Very active user group, software updated about quarterly by passionate users. SlimDevices is really reputable. I shipped some overseas and they shipped them with US power supplies, inspite of asking for UK power suppliers. They rectified this in 2 days at no cost to me! The only problem I have had is related to the damn wireless standard being over-hyped and under-delivering in my all brick house. Go with HomePlug and skip all the bandwidth, wet-people/microwave oven and security problems. Wireless ethernet is not a SlimP3 problem, but you will stress wireless with a high bandwith streaming device at much of a distance. Hmmm, overall I'd say you can't go wrong, with a few years of experience I give it my highest rating.

The best audio streamer on the market.

Pros: Beautiful design. Wireless mode is reliable. Amazing features.

Cons: Remote control doesn't look as good as the Squeezbox itself

Review: I have been a lucky owner of the Squeezbox 3 for about three months.

This product will make sense for anyone who has a lot of music files (mp3 and others) on their hard drive and like the convenience of browsing through their entire collection and play music on their living room's stereo for instance.

That is exactly my case. Since I owned an iPod, I've been ripping my entire CD collection on my hard drive. I have over 600 mp3 files stored on my computer. My CD collection takes a lot of space and it would always take some time to find a particular CD, even though I am pretty well-organized. So at some point, I decided it was worth purchasing an audio streamer to play music from my computer directly to my receiver in the living room.
It was also making sense because my computer and my living room being on two different floors, I would either have easy access to my entire mp3 collection but have to play them on poor computer's speakers OR play music on my receiver which offers a good sound quality but I would be limited to access one CD at a time.

So I purchased the Squeezbox 3 directly from the Slim Devices' website. The order was easy and I received the device within 3 days.

First of all, it is a beautiful unit (I picked the black Wireless one). The pictures talk for themselves. It looks good near any hi-fi component so you don't have to hide it. On the contrary, it's almost something you want your guests to see. They always wonder what that is and what it does.

Setup is fast and easy. You only need to install a little program on your computer that will act as a server. It browses your entire music collection on your hard drive and communicated with the Squeezbox.

Within a few minutes, I was able to browse my computer MP3s from my living room and play anything I wanted. The navigation is extremely simple. Like an iPod, you can play a song by artist, by genre, by year etc... And just shuffle play.

But the Squeezebox is so much more than an audio streamer and this is where it makes all the difference with the competition.
They are too many features to list them all here but theses are the ones I really enjoy:

1) You can play some "ambiance" sounds, like ocean waves or storm effects, and you can set the Squeezebox to act as an alarm clock and play these sounds when it goes off.

2) You have access to hundreds of free Internet radios. This is just amazing!

3) The Squeezebox can display news (RSS feeds)

4) It also comes with a free 90-day trial to Pandora (also know as the Music Genome Project). The idea is that you select a song or an artist and Pandora will create a playlist of similar songs and play them one after each other. You have the option of skipping a song if you don't like it and Pandora will modify the playlist based on your input. Pretty cool uh?

5) Finally, I like the fact that you can just go on the Slim Devices webpage and download new features. You can also write your own code to add functionalities but this is for advanced users.

Of course, one of the cons is that the Squeezebox requires your computer to be ON if you want to play anything from your hard drive. I wonder if there is a way to upload music on some HTTP server and have the Squeezbox access them from there.
Note that Internet radios and Pandora, as well as the cool sound effects, don't require your computer to be ON.

Also, I wonder if the device would work with an external Network Hard Drive. I have figured this out yet but that would be a pretty nice feature.

The only thing that I find a little disappointing is the remote control itself, cosmetically speaking only. The Squeezebox has a slim high-tech design and the remote bulky and pretty ugly. I wish they had made something classier with the remote.

User Rating: 10/10

SIMPLY THE BEST AUDIO STREAMER AVAILABLE

Pros: Plays any type of digital audio file possible. Open source technology provides customization and flexibility. Simple menus make playing music incredibly easy. Sound is SUPERB, STUNNING visuals!

Cons: After owning 4 generations of this product, I can't complain.

Review: The Slim Devices SqueezeBox is one fine piece of audiophile gear. It is stylish, and looks impressive in any living room. The host of connectivity options, both wired 10/100BaseT and wireless, and analog RCA and digital coax and toslink, allow you to connect it to virtually any network or audio equipment. The server software is slick, and easy to install and configure. If you have a collection of music stored on your computer, but want to just relax in your living room and enjoy it, this is what you want. I have followed this product and company from its beginning. Their customer service is outstanding. As the company has grown through the years, so has the product. I havent found any similar products, or products that "also" stream music, that I would choose to replace my SqueezeBox. Why didn't I give it a rating of 10? If Slim Devices would drop the price maybe $50, I think they would sell more product. The price scares people that are interested in this type of product, but arent necessarily "technology oriented".
Updated
After thinking some more, I decided it is still worth a 10.
