"Not an actual alternative for Steadicam...."
Pros: Lightweight and compact
Cons: Plastic knops, I prefer firmer metal handles
Summary: The biggest difference with a real camera balancing system like the Steadicam JR / Merlin is the flexible 'movement point'. On the Modosteady it's just one metal ball as rotary joint; on 'serious' systems its a combination of two independend axes with ball bearings. This makes the Modosteady a lot less 'steady' and not performing as good as I expected.

I think the point is, why even bother buying this when you're either going to be an amateur shooting family movies, or doing serious work that requires authentic Steadicam-style footage. This goes about 1/4 of the way there; so just skip it and save your money, or get the real thing.

Not everyone can afford a 800$ solution especially in this thime and age. For a 100$ it does a great job and dramatically improves the quality of filming. Now with the new lens control you get yourself a very decent stabilization solution for variety of situations.

Poor review AgentSixSix, you are comparing this $100 stabilizer to a $800 steadicam. Does this stable the video? You wrote a con as "I prefer firmer metal handles". This is like reviewing a honda civic and in the review telling how much better the porsche 911 is and marking the civic down. For $100 this thing kicks butt, period.

That's exactly the kind of insight I was looking for, many thanks! As a former Steadicam JR user, it sounds like it would be a step down to not have a real gimbal joint. Merlin it is then...
