"modo steady has a place in my bag of tricks"
Pros: good value compared to steadicam merlin
Cons: you must take the time to balance your camera
Summary: I'm a pro news photographer with 14 years experience in local news. I just got my modosteady Dec 26th after seeing it online. It's important to take the time to balance your camcorder correctly otherwise your going to be fighting to get smooth shots. This is a good value for the money. I appreciate the three-in one versatility of the modosteady but I bought it only for the cam stabilizer aspect. Under $200 for this kind of product is great compared to the steadicam merlin ($799). I was able to get my sony HDR-HC3 trimmed and balanced and the shots possible are really smooth and dynamic. You really need to practice with it. It appears well made but its plastic and could get broken under the right abuse. My sony HDR-HC3 needed all the counterweights to balance right and its a small handycam. I think it would be easy to overload the modosteady with anything but the smallest of camcorders so keep that in mind. I just got mine so I'm not going to pretend to give you anything but my first impression and I pleased so far. I plan to use it for moving, dynamic, point-of-view shots and with a little practice the modosteady can be a great addition to your bag of tricks.
