"Excelent video, but awful external mic compatibility"
3.0 starson by LV11Pros: Excelent video quality
Cons: Don't accept non-Canon external microphone. This is simply unacceptable for a US$ 700 HD camcorder, because you need to spend $$ buying a Canon one. My problem is that I need to use a wireless microphone and Canon doesn't have one!
Summary: As good as any other HD camcorder, but Canon should print in the box and in HF S200 page in their site it's faulty external microphone compatibility. Next time I will buy a Sony or Panasonic one.

Sure the hot shoe connection is proprietary. According to the HF200 user guide, the external mic jack will accept input from any line level device such as a mp3 player. You can get a separate preamp for your microphone and connect it to the mic jack, special preamps with phantom power and XLR jacks are available for camcorders, they screw into the tripod mount. If that's too much trouble for you, stick with the Canon mics.

The canon hf s200 have a jack connection for external mike. You should be able to use any michrophone. Please correct me if i am wrong. I am about to buy one and have planned to use a non canon mike connected by jack..
