    "Don't Buy This Camera"

    by msamuels6 on July 29, 2008

    Pros: Good Picture, Easy Controls

Cons: Useless if you want to use with a computer

Summary: I was excited to get this camera when I read all the great reviews, but none of them including C-Net tell you that this thing uses MTS files which no real editing program or media player recognizes. The program it come with is a joke, I even bought a $100 program that recognizes the m2ts file but it still doesn't work. Forget about changing the file name like some people might suggest, because that doesn't work either. As far as Canon's customer support, it is non existant. They couldn't even recommend a program that I could buy or download to convert the file to mpegs or avi's, and had no real knowledge of the product at all. A completely frustrating and miserable experience.

Yes, the camera is great. That's not the point. Manufacturers of digital cameras today KNOW that people want to edit their films on computers. The process shd be made easy--it shdn't involve searches online for obscure workarounds. Shame on Canon.

There are alot of programs that will read M2ts files. Do some research before slamming a good product. Also, you may need to upgrade your computer if you want to edit HD files. It's an inexpensive camera just for the pics and DVD video.
Besides, most included software programs are junk. Use NERO 8.0.

The latest version of Vegas- Vegas Pro 8.0B costing $125 works fine. The version of Premiere announced on 9-23-08 coming out in October which is CS4 will easily import these files too. Before these came out You needed a Mac and Final Cut to use a high end editing program without buying a lot of expensive conversion utilites like Cineform.

This camera does not have any issues when using final cut express and roxio toast 9. You can create 1080 quality video on standard DVDs or Blu ray discs. It loads straight from a card reader into final cut express using log and transfer. You can edit, add tracks and layers, music, and animated titles. Export it to Roxio toast 9 and burn to a disc. Video quality is almost identical as coming straight from camcorder to hd tv. This camera is great, but technology is new as well as software. Take the time to learn both and you will be able to capture and save memories. Also, video easily transfers to itunes, iweb, and quicktunes. You can put videos on ipod and iphone. Good luck

You can use Adobe Premier Pro CS 3 to edit. First you need to copy the .MTS to a sperate folder, then import it into Premier Pro CS3, edit it. Then Export to .M2V or Export to Encore CS3.

There is a trick here: video must recorded in SP mode only, other XP+ and FXP mode are not supported at all. This is a hidden technical issues from Canon and other Editor reviews-they might not know or do not want to scare potential buyers.
Other edit applications working the same: only .MTS which was recorded in SP mode. It is a pain after we purchased it. Do not use Cine mode. It has sharpness in AV (Aperture-Prio. AE. Do not buy any Tele or Macro on eBay: wasting of money.

Did you even attempt to find a program?
Just Google for mts and you'll find several programs, even free ones!
Like FuryVids says, keep in mind people may make decisions based on your comment! And didn't you notice that lots of other mayor brands use the same format?!

Solid picture quality. I do have the same problem as above. Have always used Adobe to edit my videos, now I cannot find any editing software in the Adobe category to edit. Adobe is no cheap product, so I hope they come up with a solution soon. Cannot understand how Canon came out with a camcorder where finding a good editing software is so difficult. This could slow down sales of both the HF-100 and the HF-10. Not well thought out!

Never expect bundled software to work. Invest in a Mac, or just google avchd editing software.
