"Well above the competition"
Pros: All the pro features
Cons: ergonomics are indeed strange
Summary: I'm a professional news and commercial cameraman and i have to agree that both the editor and one of the previous raters lack the knowledge to rate this camera. This is the the only camera under $10.000 that offers full compatibility with professional studios and facilities. That alone makes it woth its price. The other cameras mentioned in the other reviews are certainly nice camera, but they are nowhere close to bein professional.

Thanks to you and the other pros for spelling out the differences between the XL H1 and other "prosumer" offerings at the lower end of the price range. In part because I knew this and the earlier XL2 (non HDV) models were compatible with professional production -- and especially transfers of video to film, I've been waiting for this product to be released, even though it's now offered at nearly double the price of the XL2.
In part because I have a substantial investment in Canon glass and for all the many other reasons listed, this seemed like the clear choice for me.
And as should be emphasized, if you are NOT looking for a camera to use in pro or semi-pro applications, the more consumer oriented HD camcorders out there ARE probably the best choice for a great many users.
Unfortunate that the on-site reviewer's grasp of this is somewhat inadequate, but then I'm sure they have to review many products that they're not entirely qualified to review.
In that sense it's good to see some professionals here to fill in the blanks somewhat.
