"Very good camera with one big problem"
Pros: Great image quality, 30fps progressive scan mode for a slightly more "film" look, lots to love about this camera and the look of its video.
Cons: Really bad video head problem that sometimes shows up months or years later. Can cost around $300 to fix. From what I have read it is a problem with the whole Canon camera line, I had it with my little ZR40 also. Camera screws up video with horizontal lin

I had a similar problem with my GL-1's. What I learned is that you cannot use these cameras as both shooters and playback decks. I bought a separate Mini-DV deck for playback when I bought my GL-2 and this ceased the noise/head problem. If you can afford it, send the camera in for maintenance to Canon yearly.

Canon usually fixes things like this if there is a huge problem. I have two Canon GL1s, and they haven't suffered any video head problems.

I have experienced similar problems with the GL2, however I have also seen this with Panasonic cameras that I work with... sometimes it is just a bad tape or something.
