"A Breakthrough"
Pros: 3ccd, tapeless, small, supports SD
Cons: microdrive, MPEG2
Summary: This cam is very much a breakthrough. I love it. The SD support is a very important feature that fortunately JVC did not forget. But I don't like the microdrive at all. I think it is not so much important whether the camcorder is tapeless or not as long as the device is not fully solid state (except the optics, naturally).
It is very small but I would prefer it matchbox style (vertical) rather than horizontal.
3CCD improved the colours, the overall image quality and the low-light performance.
Since MPEG-2 is an old format, the files are bulky but it is easy to record onto DVDs.
H.264 would be better however.

This is an exciting category of camera but....
I hope i am wrong but it seems to be missingn a couple of things that would make it a home run camera
Namely 854x480 recording mode
progressive scan recording
actually 854x480 60P
oh and since it actually is a 1280x720 sensor how about 1280x720 recording?
this matches it up with the JVC HD1
now add HDMI or DVI-D output so you can play this image on your digital TV
so you ask what will play these formats, well obviously the recorder but more importantly, the home theater PC, which looks like it will be THE media center component of the near future.
btw, looks like it is in stock now.....

If you really want a solid state camcorder, simply replace the microdrive with a 2+GB compactflash card... What I like in this camcorder is that as long as bigger new microdrives come on the market, the recording time gets longer and longer!! 6GB microdrives are already out, and Hitachi announces the availability of 8GB and 10GB "later this year" (codename Mikey)!
