"Quality of recorded video is comparable to medium-priced webcams" on by carlevert
Pros: Light, records to harddisc
Cons: Video quality
Summary: This camcorder is useless, litterally, because of the poor quality of the recorded videos.
It's impossible to use indoors since even a well-lit room is too dark. In cases when you actually manage to capture anything, the resulting video is very noisy. The quality is comparable to medium-priced webcams (I am not exaggerating).
Moreover, the white balance doesn't get set to a reasonable temperature automatically, this is especially notable when recording in rooms illuminated by bulbs. My mobile phone (SE W850i) handles white balance better.
The captured video is saved to .MOD-files, which seems to be in MPEG2 format but with "wrong" filename extension. Why?
Since the camera presents itself to the computer as an USB mass storage unit it cannot even be used as a webcam.
Bundled software is as good as Windows Movie Maker.
The camcorder is light and easy to use, which of course is good but non-essential when the produced video is unusable. -
"Love the size and HD recording. More later" on by EquiPro1
Pros: size, weight, NO TAPES!!! YEA!!
Cons: cheap lens cover. Will review more later
Summary: My last digi video cam just bit the dust. In the process it ate up one of my tapes - one that I needed for Father's Day. Now I am left looking at my pile of mini-tapes. Did I download that one? Did I record over this one? What's on that one with no label? What am I going to do now? OK - here's a site that will transfer all of these to DVD for $8.95 each. Dang.
When I saw this videocam, I JUMPED ON IT. I usually shop around for this sort of thing. I read reviews. I shop for the best price. Yadda, yadda.
This time I didn't care. I WANTED THAT HARD DRIVE.
I record sort of the typical stuff, I think: my child's swim meets, bugs that we find crawling around, family vacations, etc. I have Pinnacle Systems software that helps easily burn easy-to-watch and navigate DVD's. I don't expect top quality in my videos. I figure that's what professionals are about.
I have 3 things that are really important to me:
1) Size. I want the videocam to fit easily into my purse.
2) Weight. I don't want to be exhausted from carrying it in said purse.
3) Easy media. I don't want to EVER mess with tapes, unfinished DVDs, mini tapes, mini-DVDs again. I have enough junk lying around on my desk.
4) Ease of use. I'm not much one for reading the manuals.
This camera met all of my requirements.
I haven't used it yet. I'm please with it out of the box. If there was one "con" at this point, it would be that it has a really cheap lens cover. My last recorder had a really strong metal cover that was attached to the camera. You slid the cover up or down to cover/uncover the lens. I really liked that. It made me feel safe, what with it floating around my purse with my keys and such. This has a really cheesy, old-fashioned plastic lens cover that you attach with a strap. That could have been done much better.
So far, set-up has been a breeze. I have HUGE hands for a woman (think Seinfeld's "man hands"), but I find the layout to be fine. I guess I'm not that picky. I kind messed around with the zoom. The whole issue that c-net raised regarding the zoom and big hands is easily solved using your middle finger, which feels better anyway. I don't anticipate it being a problem.
BTW, I never use my videocam for stills. I have an PowerShot SD400 for that.
I'll review more once I've used this.
So far: LOVE THE SIZE! LOVE THE WEIGHT! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THE MEDIA. I was able to turn it on and set it up easily. So far, so good.
