  • "Very good for the price, but you need aux lighting"

Pros Light weight- Allows you to manually set aperture and shutter speed-Great still pictures can be taken, Great 2.7" LCD colored screen that can be viewed easily in direct sunlight, which can also be flipped.

Cons No internal memory, forcing you to purchase an HDSC memory card of 16G recommended, or maximum of 32G, however, a 16G will give you hours of videoing. No mini HDMI cable included with purchase of camera, nor does it come with an extra battery.

Summary All in all, a descent "near" HD camcorder, but if you want to view near HD quality on your HDTV, you'll need the optional mini-HDMI to normal HDMI cable and attach it from the camcorder to your HDTV, Using the supplied AV connection will give you very grainy disappointing play back pictures and video's. Seeing that this camcorder doesn't come with an internal light attached, it makes it hard to get a great picture in low light conditions, however, I'm glad that the SMX-K40 allows you manually set the aperture and shutter speed, allowing you to get descent video (although not great to say the least) If your looking for an HD camcorder that will give you "true" 1080p video, this is NOT the camcorder for you, but be prepared to pay about twice what you'll pay for this little gem. In my opinion, for the normal family who wants to capture those special moments Christmas, Weddings, Grand Children etc, you'll probably find this camcorder quite useful, but if you're into serious videoing, you have to have the best etc, then spend the money and get something that offers a more quality picture etc. One thing I really love about the SMX-K40, is the 65x intelli-zoom, and 52x optical zoom, but in order to zoom in that close, you'll definitely require a tripod, otherwise you won't be able to control the shaking...and yes, this camcorder has the threaded belly button to allow you to attach the camcorder to a table top or full length tripod. When you purchase this camcorder, you'll get a CD manual, which also includes the Intelli-Studio software which will allow you to edit your video's and still pictures, Also comes with an A/C battery charger, and a USB cable which you can use to download your video's/still pictures to your computer. Using the camera is very user friendly, with plenty of options too long to mention here. I hope this review has helped someone who was considering this camcorder. I did a lot of shopping prior to purchasing this one, and it was hard to make a decision on which one to buy. Finally, I couldn't find anything as good for the price I paid, but if you hold up a bit, this camcorder will come down significantly, as newer models are coming out fast (but more expensive).
    Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.
