Manufacturer description

The DCR-TRV33 is a spectacular option for those looking for great video and stills in a compact camcorder. Offering a 1.0 Megapixel CCD imager, this high quality camcorder delivers 10X Optical/120X Digital Zoom and Carl Zeiss optics for incredible picture clarity. The 1/4.7" Advanced HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) CCD imager with 690K (effective) pixels provides excellent detail and clarity, with exceptional digital video performance (520 lines of horizontal resolution). Realize great looking digital still images utilizing 1000K (effective) pixels. The Megapixel technology enhances your digital videos and digital still photography performance. The MiniDV digital recording format delivers 3X the color bandwidth of VHS and lower signal to noise ratio compared to analog formats, providing stunning video performance comparable to DVD. Ultra Compact Design This new, unique design complements the product's ultra compact size while providing easy, comfortable access to the video controls. The Professional Quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar Lens has an advanced optical multi-layer coating offering less glare and flare with increased contrast. Though nearly identical to its slightly cheaper sibling, the DCR-TRV22, the DCR-TRV33 MiniDV camcorder has a couple of important differences. The improvement is a CCD with a higher resolution: 690,000 effective pixels for video (compared with the TRV22's 340,000 pixels) and 1 megapixel for stills (up from 680,000 pixels). The result is relatively sharp, colorful video and passable pictures. However, the TRV33 has a lower light sensitivity. The TRV22's minimum illumination rating is 5 lux, while the TRV33's is 7 lux, so the new model is less convenient for shooting in dim conditions. You can overcome this shortcoming by adding a light via the camera's hotshoe.

The TRV33 is bottom-loading, so you can't change tapes while the camera is mounted on a tripod.

The TRV33 loses the bulk of its direct predecessor, the TRV27, to match the competition in size. Though a bit thicker than the Canon ZR65MC, for example, the TRV33 is shorter. Weighing just 1 pound, 5 ounces with a battery and a tape, this Sony easily slips into a jacket pocket or a purse. Cable connectors hide under four different covers scattered across the front, the back, and the sides.

Easy access to commonly used functions enables convenient one-handed shooting. With just your thumb and index finger, you can shoot video or stills, zoom, select modes, and turn the camera on and off. The other controls are buttons that govern the display and switches that activate the NightShot and Backlight modes. Like all of Sony's 2003 models, the TRV33 has given up the old jog dial. Now, you navigate the menu, adjust focus, and set exposure with an LCD touch screen. It slims the design slightly, but using it is more awkward. Pinpointing the right spot can be difficult for large-fingered users, who may want to consider Sony's optional PDA-style stylus. Plus, menu navigation is confusingly inconsistent: you tap items on some screens and directional arrows on others. The latter variation is virtually identical to but slower than the previous jog-wheel operation.

The pull-out viewfinder keeps the design compact.

Recording controls follow the typical Sony layout.

For a camcorder in this class, the TRV33 has a relatively average feature set. Some competitors offer zoom ranges as high as 20X, but the TRV33's 10X should be enough for most home moviemaking. Programmed autoexposure modes optimize the camera's settings for different situations, such as days at the beach and in the snow. Exposure shift and manual focus are also available via the touch screen.

Along with the typical special effects, including Black And White, Sepia, and Mosaic, you'll find an option that makes your movies look like old films by simulating a slower frame rate and adding a sepia tone. The infrared NightShot mode allows you to shoot in total darkness. The results have a strong greenish cast, similar to what you see with night-vision goggles. If that's unacceptable, go instead with the Color Slow Shutter mode, which maintains colors but produces jerky, noisy recordings. The accessory shoe accepts a combination video light and flash, which improves the quality of indoor footage and stills. Simple built-in wipes and overlays let you create transitions and titles without editing on a PC.

You can save both still images and MPEG-1 movies on the included 8MB Memory Stick. The MPEG Movie EX mode grabs 320x240-pixel clips, but like video shot with a still camera, these recordings lack the clarity and the fluidity of DV captures.

The TRV33 transfers photos and functions as a Webcam via FireWire and USB. Composite and S-Video inputs and outputs enable recording from analog sources and display on analog screens.

You may rarely need the TRV33's manual controls; the automatic settings perform well in a variety of shooting situations. The autofocus works quickly and accurately, and the automatic exposure metering managed proper and consistent exposures even on a bright day at the beach. Sony's SteadyShot electronic image stabilization does an excellent job of damping movement caused by shaking hands.

You don't have to wait until the icon flashes. A dedicated button calls up the battery's status.

The zoom can be rapid or precise, slow, and steady. Alas, the TRV27's focus ring has given way to LCD gimmickry. Judging perfect focus can be tougher on the display than with the viewfinder, and tapping a screen to adjust focus doesn't feel as quick or as natural as turning a ring. Focusing is even more difficult in direct sunlight, which makes the LCD hard to see.

The life of the included InfoLithium cell is excellent, rated at 70 minutes with the LCD and 90 minutes with the viewfinder. According to Sony, longer-lasting optional batteries can extend those times to as many as 550 minutes--probably more video than anyone should shoot on a single journey away from an electrical outlet.

The microphone works well under normal conditions, but it lacks a wind-noise filter. A pronounced whooshing pervaded much of our outdoor video footage.

Under typical shooting conditions, video quality is very good. Colors are accurate and rich but not oversaturated. Outdoors and in well-lit rooms, the camera does a great job of capturing everything from talking heads to fast-moving vehicles.

Video exposure is good; colors look very saturated on a TV and acceptably saturated on a PC.

The dimness of indoor night scenes produces grainy pictures with desaturated colors. For such situations, consider attaching a video light to the TRV33's hotshoe. In near or total darkness, Sony's NightShot is impressive, but as with most infrared modes, the resulting recording looks as if you're watching it on an '80s green-screen monitor.

At its 10X zoom maximum, the TRV33 yields nicely detailed close-ups.

Like most camcorders, the TRV33 can't take photos as well as even entry-level digital still cameras. The quality of this Handycam's 1-megapixel images is best suited for Web display and e-mail. Indoor shots snapped without an add-on flash are noticeably noisy.

Like its competitors, the TRV33 produces fairly noisy and blotchy photos.

OK but hard to access preferences

Pros: Compact decent picture intuitive

Cons: All preferences are buried deep in preferences

Review: in 2003 CCD broke after 1 year min use - only had sound-took me a month to find someone to fix it (Best Buy)$350.00 plus shipping to fix!!! Sony has lost it's edge...

Very small and highly efficient camcorder - MiniDV

Pros: Size, picture quality, LCD touchscreen, battery life, features, lens

Cons: Size (it's outdated in terms of current options)

Review: I'll make this one quick because this is an older camera and more people are moving to the DVD recording cameras now. I bought this camera when my son was about to be born. I keep it on our main floor and it's always ready to go. I can grab it and be recording in 5 seconds. The zoom on it is very good and it takes great video. Tapes are cheap enough where I can designate different tapes for each of my kids etc. It is very easy to use and the LCD viewfinder/touchscreen is excellent. It makes recording easy so you don't have to futz around looking for a function and missing your shot. I would definitely recommend this camera, especially because you can now get it for under $250 on Ebay. It records well in all conditions (low light is a little grainy). If you have any questions, just email me directly (gravy1199@hotmail.com)

Love this camcorder.

Pros: Digital, Firewire, Compatible w/ my PC, lightweight, Easy use

Cons: free battery "weak", free mem stick "weak",

Review: I would advise anyone to buy this camcorder.
Good price, easy use, complex functions are easy to master, compatible with XP.

User Rating: 10/10

Fantastic for novices and those interested in making quality films

Pros: Small enough to use just about anywhere, without looking too touristy, and sturdy enought for just about any condition.

Cons: While small, it seems bulky nowadays compared to the cutting edge technology that will make everything microscopic.

Review: I have had this camcorder for over two years now and have not had a single problem. I do however have a 4 year warranty, which I believe if you are going to purchase a product for this amount of coin, you should (cya). This camcorder has been through central america on canoes through jungles infested with leopards and crocs, out on barrier reefs, rainstorms, saltwater, to Thai jungles and elephant treks where this camcorder fell in dung, seen places that usually would say how did you make it back? Caves with water neck high, etc. I could go on, but what I am trying to say is that if you have a budget and can't buy the big HD camcorders, or would rather not live on ramen noodles for a year, this camcorder is perfect for just about any element that you throw at it, and the quality of video that it makes is astounding, especially if you have an 8' x 5' dlp hd screen television. Don't be dismayed by the "paperweight guy" go out and have some fun and save some coin, and I can vouch that you will not be sorry.

User Rating: 1/10

I use mine as a Paper weight!

Pros: There are no Pro's

Cons: Buy a JVC, Canon or Panasonic

Review: Sony usually make good products, and I liked this a first, however the TRV33 broke one month after the warranty expired and need a new "drum". I was quoted a $350.00 price to fix. Mine was not abused and probably had about ten hours of use on it. Sony would not stand behind there product at all. I currently use my TRV33 as a paper weight to remind me never to purchase a Sony again! I recomend buying another brand!

1st camcorder I've bought, good choice

Pros: Excellent image quality in outdoor shots. Average still picture quality in well-lit conditions. Indoor video quality is great if it's not too dark. Slow shutter mode gives video a more 'movie-like' appearance. Compact. Built-in microphone is good.

Cons: Still pics at night are horrible. No focus ring. Adding a light sucks up insane battery power. Touch screen sometimes awkward.

Expensive but Very Good

Pros: batteries last long, extended battery has power meter right on battery, easy to move video to pc and edit/burn to dvd. very quiet.

Cons: Does not come standard with light for recording video, accessories are expensive, terrible quality indoor video when external light from window shines in the direction you are recording.

great little camcorder

Pros: decent sound, decent video quality, nice user interface, can take photo stills & low-res movies onto a memory card, well proportioned, decent battery life, well chosen set of i/o ports (USB, IEEE1394, s-video out, 1/8" audio in/out, composite a/v out,

Cons: no video-in port, quality of photos taken is questionable (when you look closely, there are many color artifacts, pictures quite grainy, often slightly mis-exposed)

Excellent Camcorder for home use

Pros: Sharp, rich videos. Compared to the Sharp ViewCam VL-Z1U and Sony TRV-22, the videos are more defined. It is also very good in low light situations. The TRV-22 is better for that, but by only about 3-5%. In fact, sometimes, I think that it is still slight

Great unit, pretty user friendly

Pros: Compact camera. Works great even though I am nowhere near a pro. For those who just want a solid camera they can use with a computer for some digital stills, make some good looking tapes then this is your camera. Got it at Sears around Thanksgiving for

Cons: So small that people with larger hands like mine can find it a little bit clumsy. Takes some time to get used to the touch-screen, but in the end, that works quite well.

Overall very good, just one hangup

Pros: Size, Sony quality, price (bought from Bedford Camera), still photo mode is larger than others, a very solid camcorder for almost every need.

Cons: Indoor light is pale (looks as if it is not white balanced), software is rather weak, no Firewire included

Very good features and easy to operate

Pros: It is a high quality no frills camcorder. Very easy to operate especially for a first time owner like me. Very good even in indoors with adequate lighting.

Overall Good camcorder

Pros: Great features, and I love the on-screen touch menus.

Good video, OK pictures

Pros: Ease of use. Good video quality, nice features, no buttons. MPEG capabilities nice to have.

Cons: Still picture quality only ok (you'll still want to buy a quality digital still camera). Memory/battery too small.

It broke and wouldn't playback.

Pros: I purchased it 6 months ago in 2003. It takes great picture and the size is perfect.

Cons: After working 6 months for me, it woudln't playback. I didn't drop or cause any kind of mechanical trauma, but somehow it wouldn't let me see what I recorded. Hopefully, SONY can fix it soon. I also didn't like no wind filter, it gets very annoying hea

Pros: This camcorder has the same video quality as TRV38(very good). Please read my opinion in Sony DCR-TRV38 for more details. But why not spent extra $100 for the TRV38, I'm sure that you'll be very happy you did it. The 2 1/2" LCD on the TRV33 is not practi

Good camcorder, good picture.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had this about a week now and I'm very happy with it. I spent a lot of time researching different models, particularly the Canon ones. This Sony has much better low light performance, which was very important to me. It was worth the extra money for that alone. The small size is also a big plus, it will get used more because it can go anywhere with you. The zoom control is a little touchy, but you get used to it pretty quickly. Overall, I'm very happy with this unit.

Everything You Need and More

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is no 3-chip camera but what you get is a fantastic compact camcorder that will do more than you need it to. If you want to point and shoot, you can. If you want to get a little more creative, you can do so as well. Which one of us out there is going to spend the time editing, etc anyway? The quality is great. On my Sony Wega it looks like I'm watching a DVD, not a home movie. Do you really need any more than that? You choose. I researched for a while (believe me, I'm very particular about what I buy) and ended up with this camera. Can't wait until our baby is here so that I can get some great shots of the little guy. PS I bought mine from Best Buy and the guys tried to sell me a bunch of accessories. The camcorder comes with everything you need. I would only recommend getting a bag and an extra battery. You can take about 13 hi-res pictures or about 40 low-res pictures with the 8MB Memory Stick supplied. You can get a 32MB for about $30. That might be worth it if you consider taking more hi-res pics. Happy shopping!

Great first camcorder to buy

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Although there are alot of features to get lost in learning how to use them, the touch screen is so much easier to navigate than using buttons. I also have to say that i love the night shot feature which is great for closer night shooting. Also the streaming of video to my comptuer is so nice for editing. Although the camcorder didn't come with editing software, i recommend ulead videostudio. I got it free off kazaa. overall i love this camcorder. it is a great first camcorder to buy for me when all i have used before is my parents one from like 1984(the same as in back to the future), which is gigantic. This camcorder fits snugly in my palm and all buttons are within reach.

Great camera, one problem

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was looking for a camcorder that took stills good enough to print in 8x10, and while they end up a little grainy this one works for that well enough. The video quality is great and the physical design of the camera is pretty comfortable. One problem: for outdoor shots, either shoot with little or no wind or expect moderately loud and fairly constant noise. Another fairly minor thing is the lack of a built-flash, but this can be handled easily enough with an accessory (by the way, I highly recommend the combination video/still light).

User Rating: 5/10

Not as good as TRV38

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This little camie is a good size for home footage. The picture is great on video and the still shots are okay for the web (definately not for printing). The attached lens cap is an awesome feature. On the negative side, there are too many panels for inputs/outputs. They should have put them into one area. For people with small hands, the photo button is impossible to depress fully without readjusting your grip. The nightshot IR feature is good and the placement of the emitter is okay. However, the microphone on the front is off to the side on the front and located basically on the outside front of the tape mechanism. This causes a higher than usual tape back ground noise, like a low buzzing. It is fine for basic home videos with many subjects, but it really detracts from the pleasure of filming a quiet scene, i.e. an outside landscape or as a groomsman in a wedding where only one person is talking at a time during the ceremony. Alas, I used this camcorder to film a friends wedding and it was great for the party, but had a annoying sound throughout the ceremony. In short, shell out the extra $100 and get the TRV38! Minimal tape noise, one panel for all jacks, and 3.5" LCD.

Great camcorder, but not too good indoors.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Love the camara. Good features, the menu is really easy to operate. The image quality indoors is not so good.

Solid Features, Easy Operation, Great Quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Got this on a price match at Circuit City. Easy interoperability with any current Sony desktops via the 4-pin s400 firewire cable (both ends). XP detects the camera and almost automates the whole capture process. Photos are a bonus. Touch screen is pretty straightforward and easy to use, and the form factor is great (what kept our family from buying a bigger one before). Overall strong product.

Get something else.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The picture quality is really not that great. I took it on vacation and came back to find out that the beautiful color of the flowers at a garden didn't show up with any detail. Could be that I needed to adjust some settings. The only thing is I had to return it because the tape mechanism got stuck and would not close.

Awsome 100% satisfied

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Good overall features, the only complaint i have is the auto zoom takes too long and it makes some shots out of focus. Other than that this camcorder is a sure buy without a doubt. I use it at night a lot(minimun to no light) and with a little post production brightness enhancement it looks pretty good. Enjoy

Great Camcoder

terrific, easy to use, needs windscreen

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After months of research we chose the TRV27 but it had been replaced by the TRV33. We bought the TRV33 sight unseen (my wife was sick of me talking about camcorders)--Sears' great price and return policy made the decision easier. This thing is great. It is as small as my Canon G2 and a third the size of my old Sony Hi-8. It's very easy to use, and very intuitive. While my wife can just point and shoot, it still allows me to do spot focusing and spot metering which if you've never used these features on a camera, you will now--it's that easy. Low light features are great--while the infrared feature is a little creepy, the slow-shutter feature lets you take cool MTV-style videos in low light with great color quality. GOOD: features, compact size, outdoor image quality, ease of use. Little flip-cover is cool too. BAD: lack of windscreen, LCD is very difficult to see in bright light, and the software isn't great. I didn't bother with the still photo feature, same reason why I don't make movies with my G2. Overall, this is a terrific camera and a good value, esp. if the price drops below $650 or so. Only caveat: the wind noise is really awful when filming outdoors. I have to go find a microphone to attach now.

Cool little Cam!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Funny how many people researched like crazy and ended up with this camera. So did I. I waited 3 months for this product line to hit the stores. I am glad I did to. Was set on the 22 but decided the 1 magapixel 33 was worth 100 dollars. The stills are ok, but for indoors you would be better off with a flash. That is the only thing I can complain about. I almost bought a cannon but they have a high repair rate, and some motor noise.

User Rating: 9/10

Fantastic Camera with one exception

Pros:

Cons:

Review: A magnificent camera with enough features to keep you busy and happy!! The only thing I wish it had was a wind filter for the microphone, besides that it is a perfect camera. Well worth the $100 more than the TRV22, double the pixels (680 vs 340) for video, and a megapixel still camera. This feature as with all camcorder cameras leaves a lot to be desired, but its better than nothing!

Good Camcorder

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Video quality is excellent even in low lights and indoors. Still picture quality and Mpeg movie is not very impressive. Still pictures in daylight are good but indoor and low light pictures are a bit darker. Mpeg movies are dark too. Other than the still pictures and Mpeg movie quality, this camcorder can be rated as the best for the price and its features. Touch screen on this camcorder is very impressive but cleaning the LCD is a little difficult. Lots of features are available in this camcorder but the User manual does not explain all the features properly. We need to do some research to figure out the options. This camera has exactly the same features as that of TRV25 (not available in stores now)from sony except for the weight, shape and touch screen. Very compact model and is lighter than my canon APS camera.

Great camera for point and shoot

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've owned a Sony DCR-TRV10 for the last 5 years until I drowned it in a bag full of soda. I was happy with the Sony except for a minor reset problem that started about 1 year ago. I decided to get another Sony because I had a bunch of accessories that I wanted to reuse such as 30mm Wide and Telephoto lens and Flash/Light. I don't like the super small palm sized cameras because the lens are smaller and I'm not used to the way you have to hold it. The camera works well with iLink (Firewire) for digital editing on PC. I like that the connectors are located outside and don't require to open the LCD. I don't like the replacement of real buttons with only touchscreen. This is not convienent for making adjustments such as exposure settings, volume, and VCP playback. But for most point and shoot, it's not a big deal. I'd rather not use Sony's memory stick cause price/MB is cheaper using other formats but I normally use my Canon S40 for great still shots. The built-in USB is great so you don't have to plug in the Memory Stick to another device to read it.

After 2 months of research, I found what I was looking for!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I wanted something compact that would also produce great low-light video and did 2 months of research/comparison on all the Sony and Canon models. The wait was worth it and I hit gold on the first purchase. It pays to read user reviews (good and bad) and it pays more to take good advice from someone who has done all the work. I'm probably one of the hardest people to please and take my technology and toys way too seriously. If you want a great compact camcorder that takes excellent video, then buy this one. It will exceed your expectations.

Nice Video Camera

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Camera works well, good quality all around....build, pictures and video. Little pricey, paid $799 at a real store, and an extra $150 for qm71 battery, 32 mb memory card, and 3 dv tape....so you do the math, (darn credit cards) I am thinking I may need a telephoto lens ($190 option) and a combo flash/light ($150 option).... those will have to wait a while.

User Rating: 5/10

Good video, poor picture quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just got the camcorder. Not impressed with the picture quality. I had used megapixel still camera before and this camcorder cannot compare. But video quality is great, the touch screen is not that bad.

Spend The Extra Money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: You can read my horror with Canon ZR65MC. I returned it and waited a few weeks for this to be sold at Best Buy. It was well worth the extra money. I am very impressed with the low light, no light features. The color and gain is almost perfect. I would could not expect anything more from a 1 CCD MiniDV Cam.

Great product! Great new design.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The touch screen control panels are a wonderful change from all the tiny buttons in the past. The new design is compact, and well constructed. Quality of video and photos is very good. Zoom control does take a bit to get used to
