    "Great Camcorder" on by jkopsguy

Pros: Very easy to use, takes good stills

    Cons: Price point

Summary: It is no surprise that some techno-snubs would have criticisms for this product, especially at the $ 1,000.00 price point. I actually got mine for $ 899.00. I suppose to the true video head, the sharpness of the video images could be better, still I think it depends on what medium you are viewing the disk from. Playing the video thru my new DPL, with the new DVD player with S-video cable made a huge improvement over the standard hook up on my Toshiba projection, but I must say the video on both my big screens is much better then my old tape driven camcorder.

Like all products you purchase, its worthiness depends a great deal on what you want to do with it. My kids play sports so I am interested in recording sporting events, the nice thing about this machine is its ability to record video and shoot stills at the same time. So for example, when recording my daughter who is a pitcher, I can take stills when she is preparing to pitch and not interrupt the video of her set-up and subsequent pitch; this is very convenient to me. The camcorder takes good to fair pictures; again for sporting events they are perfectly fine. The pictures are perfectly acceptable in most formats but this camcorder will not replace a good 4MP stand alone camera in quality and depth of pictures.

For me the slow motion function is really worth the extra money I spent. I can analyze the swings or pitching motions of my players in great detail, in my case this is a dream come true.

The touch screen has come under some criticism, but again I find it a very useful feature when playing back recorded video and setting up camera functions. I’m not sure why anyone would object to this, true, finger prints do get on the screen but they are easily cleaned.

A quick word about the recording time, I was very concerned about the short recording time ½ hour. In practice however, a half hour is a lot of video and you can change the disks in about 10 sec. So it has not been an issue. I have not yet tried the Long Play feature which gives you about 1 hour. Again, I mostly shoot sporting events so there are plenty of opportunities to change disks, however, if you are shooting a long lecture or even a long wedding it might be inconvenient. There are trade offs, the tape videos shoot for one hour, but takes at least that long to down load them into a computer, the mini DVD can be downloaded to the computer in minutes, so I’ve decided to take convenience over the longer play of the tapes.

The bottom line for me the machine is great, once video is shot you finalize it and drop it into a DVD player and you are done. In addition, you can quickly down load the video to your computer and with a little work quickly copy it to a larger DVD. This process is 100X faster then the tape system. This camcorder is for the none technical consumer, if you are interested in tinkering with white balance, shutter speed etc. then this machine won’t be for you, if you want an easy to use camcorder that takes great video then this is your guy.

"I got this camcorder 2 days back............after long waiting" on by Biju Thoompil

Pros: Big LCD,simutanous still and video recording and a slow motion recording

Cons: Optical Zoom is 10 only

Summary: Hi....I bought this camera 2 days back and I think it is a good camcorder. The video quality seems to be good.Though it has a simultanious recording, the picture is not so good as we capture, when recording videos. The super night shot is ok.It has a big(3.5)LCD display(not of that much important)and a slow motion recording which I like.Any way over all I think it is a good camcorder.....But I will be back with my opinion again, after some time, as I will be more familiar with it.I bought this camcorder from www.radioactive deals.com.Remember, do not be fooled when you buy the camcorder from any other online store as they advertise less price.Because they may not provide you with the manufacturer accessories.Radioactivedeals customer service is very good I paid them for 7-10 day delivery and I recieved it the second day

"We are talking quality friends.." on by ronwinship

Pros: Excellent features and touch screen is impressive.

Cons: Have to use LP mode to get most out of battery and play!

Summary: This video camera is sort of a dream come
true. You get a free bluetooth wireless
mike..(although you will have to wait several
weeks to get it)....a 16X9 Format and 5.1
Dolby Sound. This camera is hot! Even the
customer service and tech people know their
stuff....or will find out for you. Come on,
you stick the battery in and it doesn't feel
like you are changing tires on a truck. You
open up the 3x5 side screen and you can see
everything. It does take some getting used
to....but what a great camera! Now the tough
part....you can only get 30 minute DVD disks
and that makes you wonder. You can't used
the last two or three minutes of a disk...
because it needs that to "finalize" your
product. What is great to learn is that the
LP function loses little. The normal degradation you might expect of Mini-DV's or
VHS is non existent. Also, the battery life
does go away quickly...but you always know
when you are and how much time you have left
both on the disk and the battery. This is
a quality piece and offers good tech support.

"The 505 is not compatible with Macs" on by rbkj

Pros: Its great if all you want to do is shoot and watch. The quality of the outdoor input is very good, indoor good.

Cons: Lots of "white" eye which cannot be fixed with traditional red eye removers.

Summary: I was told (incorrectly) by several suppliers that this camcorder was compatible with a Mac. I have not discovered how. There is no Mac software for editing?and no plans for one?and it is not compatible with iMovie, or any other Mac editing program that I know of?and I've looked. Also, no firewire.

Photos are fine outside (in bright light) but unacceptable inside. White eye, dark pictures (despite Sony's add on flash), and, according to tech support there is no way to adjust the ASA (didn't even know what that was).

Make SURE YOU USE SONY DISCS. I used a Memorex and lost 30 minutes of unreplaceable memories.

I'm ready to give it away just so I don't invest anymore of my time and available brain space on a camcorder I should neve have bought in the first place. From now on I will go to the Apple site first, and select my camera from those that have been tested as compatible.

"Everything you could want" on by roboto-san

    Pros: Excellent picture quality

    Cons: Zoom lever got flaky

Summary: I've been using this camcorder for about 6 months to record indoor hockey with poor lighting. The picture quality is better than any camera I've had before, and I can't imagine it being any better. There is a manual white balance, which lets me get the color just right. The LCD screen has excellent resolution and it's touch-screen, which allows it to pack a lot of settings without a lot of crazy buttons. The only problem I've had with mine is that the zoom lever got flaky. If I "massage" it before use, then it works most of the time. This camera has a "true" 16:9 widescreen mode, unlike some other camcorders that fake it by just cutting off the top and bottom. Or you can use regular 4:3 mode. Formatting an RW disc is very fast, about 12 seconds if it has been used before. I use double-sided RW discs, and I've never had any problem with lost data (unlike tapes, which also wrinkle and wear out). Still photos are 4MP, and can go right onto the disc, allowing tons of storage. But the still photos are not quite as good as what you would get from a dedicated still camera.
