"Sony DCR-HC30"
Pros: Easy to use when it works
Cons: Problems that render the camera unusable
Summary: We're were intermittently happy with this camera. Now, we're dissatisfied with it. It's worked great (easy to use) until suddenly, there were problems with the tapes and the memory stick and on-off switch. The memory stick starts clicking like it's trying to read something but it's not engaged (clicking sound) The on/off mode switch isn't functioning properly either. I thought by purchasing a Sony product there would be some quality behind it. We tried calling Sony, waste of time. We tried using the CNET forum to see if others had the problem (they did) and any final solutions (none). Waste of money, stay away from Sony handycams.

I have exactly the same problem. Frustrating as hell. And no help from Sony here either.
I think I'm through with Sony (they also discontinued Clie devices shortly after I bought one).
