"Go for the better value DCR-HC40"
Pros: Acceptable images in low light condition. Steady function works good. Nice 3.5'' LCD.
Cons: Color smear, not acceptable for a camcorder at that price. 2M photos are bad, useless. Battery life is short. Take 4 hours to transfer a tape to PC using USB cable and burn it to VCD.

"I almost strayed from Sony... Whew!"
Pros: Unbelievable picture/image quality and low light clarity. Very decent/useable 1.92 megapixel stills. Did side by side comparo with my Dad's Canon Optura 400 which he convinced me in almost buying and hands down, the Sony DCR-HC85 won.
Cons: Higher learning curve with the touch screen setup.

"Great video and still camera"
Pros: large LCD screen-3.5", great digital pictures-Yellowstone Park video and pictures are excellent. Easily burned to CD. All that you could ask for in a video camera. Even a flash on camera mode.
Cons: If you want good recording sound-- use an external mike. One on camera just so so.
