"Good video + portability"
Pros: Video quality, Handling, Portability, Good Look, touch screen LCD
Cons: Motor/tape noise, Low light is OK but not special, No Mic jack
Summary: Well, this is a nice portable camera under 1 lb, with about 5 cm width. Handling is great. Zoom and on/off control is easily reachable + the controls from touch screen LCD are really handy. Video quality is as good as any GREAT camcorder in the market.
Low-light is OK but not special. My main complaint is that the motor/tape noise in real quiet places can be annoying. This is common to most of mini DV camcorders.
However, in the recorded clips, the high frequency noise is substantially reduced or non-existent. Note that you can record on the memory stick too to avoid the noise in real quiet places (lower quality with MPEG-2 format). There is no MIC jack so you might use wireless mics!
Easy editing & Easy capture via USB 2.00 in Win XP multimedia.
Hint: When installing the USB driver and Sony Picture Package (SPP) software, do NOT check any auto start of any kind. After installation go to the SPP folder/ Capturing tool folder and run the Capture program (better to create a shortcut on desktop too) for easy capturing. Then use alternative programs such MS movie maker or Adobe premiere for editing.
Compared with Sony DVD403 (a great camera), the DVD403 surely does not have the tape noise, same video performance, better low light performance. BUT remember the data is compressed in mini DVDs of DVD403 (MPEG-2 format) and editing imposes more challenge. mini DVD's are far more expensive. Only 20-30 minutes video per each DVD and they must be finalized before playback in PC/DVD player. I prefer handling of PC1000 and also the look and the match box style.
