"amazing camcorder except..."
Pros: Small. Price isn't that bad, bigger disk drive, easy to use.
Cons: MINI HDMI??!!???!!!???
Summary: Ok, here it goes. The camcorder is good, in fact it's great. It does everything I need and more. Only hiccup from sony is this one thing... IT DOES NOT COME WITH AN HDMI CABLE IN THE BOX. Also, to make things more complicated, stores don't carry the HDMI cable because it's a propriotary cable that's smaller. I get the IDEA that sony was trying to accomplish (for maybe a second), but if they were to make a special cable for this camcorder, why can't they include it in the box? Now I have to use standard old COMPONENT. I

ok, ordered it, tested preliminarily.
Video performance: so so.
I noticed lots of noise in HD-XP mode. Recorded in the home with Florescent lamp. I was very surprised it did not come with the HDMI small connector footprint (someone mentioned this on the net). This is not normal. So used the included component video cable to hook up to my Samsung 42" 1080P HDTV. Saw lots of grainy noise,,, probably due to the small lens and projecting too many pixels. Signal to noise problem here?!
Ok, so I suspected it was the component video DACs or ADCs that were the culprit of the noise (trying to convince myself it was an excellent camcorder). So, installed the Software on the PC, nice dock with USB cable. Love that one touch button on the dock that says "Burn It". Burned onto the DVD+R with the AVCHD content. Took about 15 minutes to burn about 10 minutes of HD-XP video. Popped out, and slided into the PS3. Ok, here is the digital being decoded directly from the PS3,,, no more reliance on the ADC/DAC via component video.
well well well,,, the video noise was still inherent inside the video. Conclusion was the video content had noise, and that was related to the recording performance of the SR7. Btw, the video playback froze several times, not sure whether the PS3 problem, or the DVD burner problem, or the Sony software?@#. Had to push skip several times.
I am going to do a 2nd test drive of this camcorder in the home and outside the home, and try to see whether the S/N problem is real. So far, not impressive.
I really like the hard drive 60Gbyte. Real cool, and the fact you can press a button to burn onto a DVD. This works out to be about $3 per hour of HD-XP video when backed up on external USB drive, compared to about $12 per hour for MiniDV tape.
PLUSES:
Real small/ compact/ light. Feels good in the hand.
Total darkness recording, real cool. -
Hi Friend,
I just wanted to let you know the the new HDMI type C connector is no propriatary to Sony. This is an HDMI type C connector that was established in the HDMI 1.3 standard. Most new portable devices will have this type of connection. It is unfortunate that Sony did not include the cable but you can buy a Type C to Type A adapter.
