"very good value, but with quirks"
Pros: feature packed for the money. fairly compact for a 10x zoom cam. more bang/buck than current competition (canon powershot S1). robust manual override controls.
Cons: camedia software doesn't allow editing (deleting) of images from pc (unlike canon). ergonomics and design slightly "generic" and cheap feeling (i.e. cheesy usb door, lens housing rattles). no image stabilization (useful on long zoom shots). default sett

The sound for movies can be set to automatically come on if you turn the "all reset" off. Every time I turn my camera on movie mode the sound is on and it's in shq which is where I want it. You can also zoom in movie mode if digital zoom is on.

You can use another software, there are plenty to see wich one fit your needs. Stabilization can be worked on sports mode, or being a creative photographer, perhaps not all the zoom is needed to use then you see the picture fully detailed on the PC. Learn to use the remote at your convenience, and fully read the .pdf manual to see you can solve the settings reset issue mentioned.

camera really struggles with autofocus under dim conditions. sometimes no focus point is reached. resort to manual override in this case.

only getting 30-35 pics from a full charge. very abnormal, not anywhere close to the 140+ olympus suggests. returning for warranty service. new sales are being supplied with Li-12B cells.

I can't take a decent shot with this. The TIFF(highest quality) offers the best picture obviously. But I notice may artifacts in all the other resolutions. If I want to keep an image on my hard drive instead of printing it, where's the stellar quality? Plus, if you choose TIFF, you can only take one picture on the 16mb card, 32 on a 512mb! There is no 1GB XD card yet, either. The XD format is more expensive as well. Maybe it has faster transfer speeds?
No image stabilization and the focus is always off. I realize this is a prosumer camera. It would be nice if Olympus offered tips for shooting(changing settings of the camera) in the manual. I've seen some great sample shots with this camera all over the web. From a shot of a water hose with individual drops of water to crystal clear night shots. I want to have this quality, but I'm afraid that I need to work with the camera and its manual's flaws. -
it's true the software is not great, but it's free. upgrade to photoshop if you want real editing power.
in my experience the default settings only reset if the battery has been removed a long time (i.e. more than 24 hours)
as for the lens cap, you're supposed to use the string to tie it to the camera strap. that's one of the first steps in the manual!
i bought a case for $20 and love it... it stores extra batteries and memory cards. i'd never call it a mediocre camera because it didn't come with a free case.
