    "Extremely satisfied with this camera"

    by digidave1991 on March 2, 2008

Pros: Resolution, sharpness per pixel, relatively low noise levels, superior color rendition, very good dynamic range, superior handling, improved menu system, improved lcd, spot-on focusing.

Cons: Could use: even larger magnification of viewfinder (although this would make the camera even bigger), dedicated ML button, improved software, greater than +1 diopter adjustment for the farsighted.

Summary: I have been a professional photographer for over 25 years, with over 14 years of digital experience.
I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was referring to about software and formatting. The Canon supplied software is included with the camera and updates are free. There is no Canon software for the system that I am aware of that needs to be purchased separately. And, all the software is released for both Windows and Mac.
As a happy EOS 1DsII owner, the 1DsIII is pretty much what I expected - an improvement in just about every conceivable area. There's nothing revolutionary about this camera, unless 21.1 megapixel for a full-frame camera rates that adjective, but I am looking for the consummate professional tool - not a revolution. And here, the 1DsIII delivers just what it should.
The files look better than some very good medium format backs I've used. Some of the current highest-end mf backs will best it in pure resolution, but for convenience, lens variety and ability, speed, handling, high ISO, and versatility in a package that delivers image quality very close to the best, it leaves those others in the dust for my work.
Not to sound too much like a fan-boy, I must note Canon's bewildering refusal to put a dedicated mirror lockup button on the the camera. Also, even at the expense of making a big camera a little larger, I'd like to see an even higher magnification of the viewfinder (now 86%, how about 95-100%?) and an increase in the diopter correction on the plus side, from the current limit of +1 to +2, for those of us older folks with farsightedness. Lastly, the software, especially DPP for converting raw files, could and should be greatly improved with much more control of color, gamma, brightness, and highlight and shadow detail in the raw mode. And how about including more lenses in the list of those that can be "corrected" with the "lens aberration" tool.
All-in-all, this camera is a terrific professional tool which should help its users make the most of their picture-making abilities.
