"Wow, very impressed" on by lowly_cook
Pros: fast auto focus and crisp pictures, long battey life
Cons: somewhat heavy with battery pack grip and a small screen
Summary: I've had the 20d for a few days now. This is my first dSLR. After using point & shoot digital cameras (Sony & Canon A80) and a film slr (Canon Elan IIE), I decided to purchase the 20D because I wanted more flexibility shooting shots. I must say WOW. The auto focus is very fast and the shots turn out great. The battery life is very good. With the battery pack, two batteries can be used. I have taken approx. 200 shots so far and the battery indicator is still full. I am sure if only one battery is used, it will be sufficient for most people.
Aside from the weight (including the grip) this camera is great. Oh yeah, another concern which is not related to the camera itself is that it attracts a lot of attention when I'm outside taking shots.Updated
Well now that I've had the 20d for 2 weeks, I must say this so far an excellent camera. Most of the shots I take are good. The only gripe I do have with the camera is that there isn't true eye control focus. That is, 95% percent of the shots are in focus, but there is the occasional shot that focuses on the wrong area. I miss the eye control focus my old Elan IIE had.Updated

"Awesome prosumer/almost-professional camera!" on by radioflyer7
Pros: FAST system in turning on and triggering, 5 shots/sec bursting (for great children pictures), 1/8000th second shutter speed (fun water pictures), 9-point auto-focusing system, solid feel of the body,
Cons: The door for the memory card is a bit loose as it is on the back side of the right hand grip. The shutter is a bit loud if you don’t want the turning heads in a quiet setting (but even then it’s not
Summary: I was upgrading from point-and-shoot digital. The choice was between the Canon Rebel XT, Nikon D70, and the Canon 20D. I am glad that I footed the extra cash for the 20D and even the IS 17-85 lens. It's well worth the investment for budding enthusiasts/amateurs like myself. Like playing a violin, you can’t really be inspired to do better and do more if you don’t have the right instrument.
PRO: FAST system in turning on and triggering, 5 shots/sec bursting (for great children pictures), 1/8000th second shutter speed (fun water pictures), 9-point auto-focusing system, solid feel of the body, ease of menu and yet plenty of options.
IMPROVEMENT: The door for the memory card is a bit loose as it is on the back side of the right hand grip. The shutter is a bit loud if you don’t want the turning heads in a quiet setting (but even then it’s not so unacceptable as you do have a nice camera to show off!).
17-85 IS LENS: Way better than the cheap stock lens! Image stabilization is great especially if you don’t like shooting with a flash. -
"Excellent All the Way Around" on by mouseclick
Pros: Great Pictures, Great Flexibility
Cons: Expensive; Menu Could be Simpler
Summary: Without going into all the technical details and capabilities of this camera, overall it is top notch, durable, dependable, and with excellent quality. It is expensive, but so are all cameras that are this good. As you would expect, the camera offers great flexibility while also having simple-to-use features, such as point and shoot, sports modes, portrait modes, etc. Speaking of simple to use, the menu could be a bit simpler. I find menus on Nikon cameras to be better. But it's not a deal breaker - if you are in the market for such a complex camera, a slightly complex menu is of little to no concern. This is a great camera you can count on for many years to come...

"Excellent for Low-Light situations" on by tjamison
Pros: Easy to learn/use, excellent in low light, most standard options
Cons: very occasional reboot required (3 / year)
Summary: I have had the 20D for 3 years now, and still love it! My wife and I bought it for shooting good pictures at dance competitions of my daughters. It does a great job at that and I have also used it for theater productions and concerts on-stage at our high school, and night football games. We bought the f2.8 70-200mm Canon stablized lens (more $ than the camera body) and it was well worth it. I do slide shows for dance and school and I have parents come up to me all the time wanting to know if I'm a professional photographer, and how did I get such good pics, etc. I have several other Canon products (Printer, Scanner) and they have all been excellent products. My wife uses it too, although I need to set it up for her for low-light situations (Typical: Tv mode, speed=150-300, ISO=1600, tungsten white balance). I would not hesitate to recommend the 20D, 5D, or the IS lenses to anyone.
The only problem I have had is every once in a while, the camera seems to freeze (sometimes with an error code). I find that simply removing the battery and reinserting reboots it back to normal. OK, I wish the LCD screen was a little bigger for viewing, I wish I could take video with it occasionally, and at 1600 ISO it is a "little" noisy. -
"Excellent camera for travel photography" on by mhewlett217
Pros: Fast acting (even caught flash of a lighthouse on first try), excellent light metering performance, sharp lens, many modes
Cons: Had to use manual metering a few times to overcome lack of a spot meter
Summary: After almost 3000 photos, I love it more than the day I got it. Absolutely no serious flaws. Highly recommend adding 70-220/F2.8 IS for those long shots.
