"Excellent buy!!" on by mynclino
Pros: Picture quality is excellent. Good price.
Cons: Low battery life.
Summary: This is well worth the money. The picture quality is very good. I will not longer bring my big
DSR camera on my vacations. This is my main camera now! -
"great bang-for-the-buck camera" on by frizzlefrysb
Pros: AA battery, size good for AA battery camera, decent zoom, good features
Cons: shutter speed and processing could be faster, but not bad for a $129 camera. sequencing shots kinda of a pain.
Summary: overall, this camera is awesome for someone who would rather have a camera that operates on AA's (i do a lot of backpacking, recharging is not an option). This camera replaces my old A580, and it's a great replacement-- just don't expect features out of this camera that $300+ cameras would have. Love Canon's digic4 processors. Still has a viewfinder!

"Good beginner, great pictures. Btween shots cud B fastr" on by rtsamsonusmc
Pros: This is an awesome beginner camera. It has a ton of features and packs an "automatic" setting for just about every available feature. The face framing/following feature and image stabilization are my favorites. Picture quality is incredible.
Cons: First I used an 8gb SD, which gave me a ~5000 picture capacity. I just tried an 8gb class 4 SDHC, expecting a huge boost in write speed performance. There was no noticible difference. It takes about 2 secs beteewn pix regularly & 1.1 in continuous
Summary: I really like this camera. I am a beginner, and while I was drooling over the DSLR's, I realize that I would probably never even use most of the capabilities. The Powershot A1100IS seems to be designed specifically for me, the beginner. I've been playing with this thing for a week, reading the manual, and online. I still don't know what some of the features do. But fortunately, everything that I either don't understand or that I just don't know what settings to use in what situations(i.e. ISO, my colors, i-contrast, white balance)-all of these "features" have and automatic setting. So until I educate myself enough to begin experimenting and learning hands-on, I can just keep most of it on auto, point, shoot, and still end up with stunning pictures-while knowing next to nothing about cameras or photography.
The ONE thing that I really wish was improved on this camera is the amount of time it takes for the camera to get ready between pictures. If the camera is in Single Shot mode with the review off(it takes longer with the review on...the review just shows the picture you have just taken on the main LCD before it writes it to the flash memory), it seems to take about 2 full seconds-sometimes more-between the time I take the picture and when the camera's LCD turns back on, begins refocusing, & is ready to take the next picture. The is also a Continuous mode which cuts the time between pictures down to ~1.1 seconds between pictures, but this does not allow you to refocus via the LCD, at leat-I haven't tried to zoom in or out optically via the viewfinder while in continuous. As stated above, I originally started with an 8gb SD card - a microSD in a standard miniSD adapter which allowed me a capacity of ~5000 shots(I only got about 50 with the included 512mb). I thought the lack of speed between poictures resulted from the flash memory I was using. So I borrowed an 8gb PNY class 4 micro SD with it's own miniSD adapter(guaranteed write speed of 4mb/s) and I saw NO difference at all in the time between shots. I'm ordering a SanDisk 8gb Extreme III with a 30mb/s tranfer speed...I read somewhere it writes @ about 20mb/s and I'll try that and report back if it gets any better, but I suspect that the limitation comes from the camera's write speed itself. However, I could be wrong.
All of these point-and-shoot cameras look as though they have a bit of a lag between pictures, so it may be unfair to criticize this camera for that reason. The powershots do seem to take a little bit longer than its competitors, but only by tenths of a second. I only concentrate on this limitation because it was the only aspect important to me that I neglected to educate myself about prior to the purchase.
All in all, this is a great beginner camera. -
"Lens error after 6 months" on by karladennison
Pros: takes decent pictures and has video as well
Cons: My biggest complaint is that the camera received a Lens Error after 6 months. Sent the camera back during the 12 mo warranty period, and Canon fixed it. 6 mos later the Lens error happened again (warranty period is over).
Summary: I checked the net to find that many other people have experienced this same issue.Sorry, but a $190 camera that can't last more than a year gets a thumbs down!!!

"worst battery life i've ever seen" on by iwilliams77
Pros: the idea of using standard batteries, typically good Canon controls and picture quality
Cons: just purchased, took with me on vacation - always a very pro-canon customer. needed new batteries after a handful of shots!!!! Spent about $25 on batteries in 3 days. Not worth it. Try rechargeables next but from what we've read, not much better.
Summary: don't go with this camera.
