"Great for family shots but art photos are complicated"

    by mkewing04 on August 22, 2006

Pros: Neat manual option, good automatic shooting, decent battery life for family events, etc. Super Flash!

Cons: Flash is over powering, you can shoot in the dark and produce day light. Also, this is clearly not meant for art photos. Extended exposures burn out the batteries when the camera doesn't choke.

Summary: I really like this camera for use in every day stuff. Taking pictures of my niece as she gets bigger, sunsets and simple portraits come out very nice, although occasionally a little grainy when they get shrunken to fit on-line file maximums. The manual setting also works well as long as you have a good, steady tripod and aren't trying a shot any longer than about 3 seconds. Any longer than that and the batteries are toast. Not a huge problem for most photos but night photos will have to stay in the realm of manual cameras until they figure out how to have a 15 second exposure not eat up all of the batteries. And, of course, the longest exposure is 15 seconds, so moving night pictures are out of the question. But its good for what it's good for and very sturdy, especially with the warranty from the store I got it from. It takes some pretty serious abuse (i.e. a coke spill) and keeps ticking.

Not an art camera but excellent family and social piece of equipment.

I have just ordered this camera an am awaiting its arrival. I have two cameras with lithium batteries, and they last much longer than AA batteries. When I used AA batteries, they were only rechargeable batteries, and I always carried a spare set in a tiny vinyl case. The flash is devastating, no matter what brand of camera you have. You can buy a set of 4 batteries with recharger for about $20 and it's worth it.
