  • "Big battery problem!!! Needs to be recalled"
    1.5 stars
    on by gregka

Pros: Quality of pictures is average. Do not see why is so highly rated especially when it needs to be recalled due to such a battery problem.

Cons: Canon PowerShot A590 IS has a serious battery problem. After only 6 pictures it shows that battery is empty and it wil not work. This camera is a joke and I cannot believe how highly is rated. Please do not buy this product.

Summary: Serious problem with battery that appeared 6 months after I purchased it makes this camera a VERY BAD CANON PRODUCT. Please mention this issue at cnet.com on your review and feel free to contact me if you would like more info on this product.

Rechargeables technology has improved a lot lately. I used Sanyo's eneloop and recharge them every time I use the camera again.

We have the same super short battery life sometimes, like less than 10 pictures with new batteries or freshly charged rechargeables. We even bought new batteries and a new charger thinking the one we had been using had failed somehow. The camera seems to screw up when the batteries get low while using it and it turns itself off. After that, it seems to have a corrupt preference or something. Doing a factory reset through the control panel seems to fix it until the batteries get really low again. It is just really annoying to have to reset and then reset the time and date and image numbers. We can get 100 to 150 pictures with flash and the display set to turn off after 3 or 4 seconds. When it is goofs up, we might get 10. It isn't that great of a camera for the hassle, after all, you will end up running the batteries down in normal use, seems like it should be able to handle it better. We're getting a new one, it is too unreliable to depend on for pictures at birthdays and family events

I never had a problem with the batteries (I use rechargeable Eneloop ones) and I can leave the cam on forever and the batteries last like a week. And I take a LOT of pictures and record videos.Maybe the problem is the batteries you are using. The reason why the camera is rated so high is because it's easy to use, takes great pictures (the pictures I take, unless my hand shakes or I don't choose the right settings when I'm on manual, come out REALLY good ) and it's cheap.

It is definetly your rechargable batteries which are getting used up. Try using reg alcaline batts and you'll see. Also need to learn to save batteries whenever possible. Most juice is used by LCD screen and zooming. Turn off the LCD screen between pictures and when not needed.

I have the same problem with powershot a590 IS. I tried many batteries from many companies and all die after a couple of shot. I called canon several times for that and it seems it is a new problem to them! It definitely needs to be recalled. Please let me know if you have the same problem with this camera too.

i dont know what battery issues you guys are talking about. but maybe i can help - i dont own rechargeable batteries so i buy regular ones and they last me at least 100 or more snaps!!! maybe its those rechargable batteries that are a problem and not the cam itself.

This is a great camera...OP needs to remember to always have fully charged batteries before using a camera
