"Excellent all-around camera" on by Tookie Tookie
Pros: Great color, lots of detail, fast performance
Cons: No image stabilization
Summary: I upgraded from a 4-year-old Sony camera, and am very impressed with the A640. I did a fair amount of research, and many other cameras in this category had performance issues, such as shutter lag and slow processing or flash recharge time.
The image quality of the pictures is excellent. Although many articles tell you that anything over 5 megapixels is superfluous, the 10 megapixels are quite handy if you want to crop a shot -- they still look perfect even if you are only using a portion of the photo. The camera even handles shadows well, with virtually no noise and good detail. Color is very good.
The only thing keeping the score from being a perfect 10 is that I wish the camera came with the Image Stabilization that the A710 has, because that would assist in low-light situations such as indoor photos without a flash. The ISO 400 and 800, like on most cameras, are very noisy. ISO 100 and 200 make many, but not all, low-light shots without a flash possible. In any event, we chose this one over the A710 because of the battery life and speed of performance (the A710 has only two AA batteries, which affect these things). The camera handles indoor flash shots quite well, and the flash intensity is adjustible if needed.
In any event, the camera is very easy to use, both in fully automatic and manual modes. The screen tells you where it's focusing on each shot, which is quite useful. There is no shutter lag, and its movie feature is quite useful. If you get a big memory card, you can take a good deal of good quality video (8 minute limit is per clip, not per memory card).
Very happy with this purchase... -
"Excellent performer, advanced features, best of all worlds" on by mgironda
Pros: 10 megapixel in small package, large 2.5" swing-out screen, lots of manual settings if desired, great looking bezel, easily replaced AA batteries in a pinch
Cons: A little on the heavy side with a set of extra batteries (takes 4), no IS
Summary: Picked up this beauty to replace my old A80, the first model in this line from a few years back. Although the camera has been slicked up and slimmed down since then (bigger screen, thinner body, faster start-up), it still has the best package for the price at this level. I compared to other Canon models and came up with the following... SD series is too small for my hands and doesn't have enough manual settings, A710 IS is nice but doesn't feel as professional, S4 IS to too bulky, G7 is too expensive. This model fits my grip perfectly and performs flawlessly, with quick startup time and flash recycle, and intuitive controls. Beginning users would even enjoy this using the Auto mode and can learn about extra settings in spare time. HIGHLY recommended!

"Great Camera and Value with amzaing Detail and Great Features." on by Zippoty75
Pros: Loads of Features that are very functional
Cons: Adjusting Settings takes some time because there are so many features.
Summary: Bought at NewEgg.com or $350
Free Shipping and Free 1gig memory Card
Great Camera. You can adjust this camera to take any picture you want. With the right setting you can take the perfect picture without compromise. The 10 Megapixels really do make a difference in the quality. THe video has some very cool and useful features. The video taken on this is very smooth and no sign of choppyness. THe 32 meg card supplied is kind of useless so i would suggest getting at least a 1gig high speed sd card. -
"Excellent digital camera. Shoot multiple photos without long shutter lag." on by ElizeFourie
Pros: Excellent clear pictures in low light (not direct sunlight)
Cons: Have to be carefull in direct sunlight (over exposure) and night shots (loss of detail)
Summary: One of the best "entry" level digital cameras. Easy to use for beginners, and satisfying for more advance photographers. Will recommend it. Very good buy.

"Great Camera with inexplicable missing feature" on by Mike.Willis
Pros: Image quality, battery availablity, big articulating screen
Cons: no date/time stamp
Summary: I have had the 3 and 4 megapixel version of this camera previously and I loved both of them. I strayed from Canon and bought a Nikon 8800 which I hate so when I saw a 10 megapixel PowerShot, I decided to go back to Canon. I particularly like the fact that the camera uses AA batteries. I have been stranded a couple of times when I used a camera that requires a proprietary battery.
I like the big screen on the back that will tilt and turn anyway you need it.
The A640 is a great camera and I like it, but Canon has deleted a feature that is important to me.
The A640 will only put a time/date stamp on a low resolution (1600 X 1200) picture. When you take a picture at full resolution or even close to full resolution, it won't put the time and date on the picture. This is just plain nuts. If it had that one feature, I'd give it a 10. I have to have the date/time stamp on my pictures so I'll be getting rid of it as soon as I can.
