  • "Very good camera, but unless you really need the extra zoom, the A570 IS is a better buy, IMO."
    on by digicamdude

Pros Very good image quality, fast non-flash performance, nice grip

Cons Slow flash recycle time, small viewfinder, high ISOs have lots of noise (this is typical)

Summary I bought this camera around Christmas. Unfortunately, due to dust in the viewfinder, I had to send it back. I believe it was defective.
Non-flash performance was good. However, when the flash is on, you can expect to wait up to 6 seconds between shots with the flash (although this is typical of cameras that take 2 AA batteries). The LCD screen, while only 115,000 pixels, actually looks surprisingly good. The optical viewfinder, however, is small. Oddly enough, the viewfinder on the older Canon A530 is larger (I believe the viewfinder on the A570 IS is also larger).
The image quality is also excellent at lower ISOs. But, like most compact cameras, at ISO 400 and up, there is some noise.
So, bottom line, it is a very good camera. But, if you don't need the extra zoom, the A570 IS is definitely a better buy in my opinion. Actually, if you need the extra zoom, I would be inclined to say to bypass this model altogether and go with the SX100 IS, which has an even longer zoom (while it doesn't have a viewfinder, the screen is nicer).

  • "great portraits"
    on by ojad10

Pros great sharpness, good for posed pictures

Cons gets blurry sometimes, though easy to fix

Summary i used this camera in my media class at school.
for haloween we had to go out and take photos of people with costumes.
i got some great posed pictures of people, and some great candids too.

  • "Canon has produced a gem!"
    on by photoflash638

Pros Excellent photo quality, easy to use and sturdy body construction

    Cons irritating playback function

Summary I have been interested in photography for a long time, but it wasn't until last month that I got this Canon A720 IS. It has worked great since then and my pictures are terrific. The Canon quality is clear to see in the sturdy body. Even in dim light the pictures turn out well; the only annoying thing is the playback function you have to click on to view shots.

The camera for all its high-tech features is easy to use-I could get it snapping shots right after I popped in batteries and a memory card (1-2 GB is best for this camera.)

  • "new DIGIC III processor plus key features -- 2nd-curtain-sync flash, 6x optical zoom, ..."
    on by clchen711

Pros 6x optical zoom, 2nd-curtain-sync flash, using economical and readily available AA batteries (or LSD AAs)

Cons not slim enough for pants pocket, not 3-inch LCD as SD870 has

Summary Canon A720 has the 2nd-Curtain Sync Flash feature that SD870 lacks, which is critical for taking slow shutter speed pictures with flash. Most people take camera flashing as the indicator of a shot done, stop posing (start moving) after the camera flashes, but it is not true/done if the flash is set off at beginning of the slow speed shutter picture taking, a.k.a. 1st-curtain sync flash, people start moving while camera still needs a couple more seconds to catch the low light scenes/background, the result with 1st-Curtain Sync flash is the blurring people/faces on picture.

Without the 2nd-Curtain Sync Flash function, it is almost impossible to take good pictures with the slow shutter speed flash, such as kids with dim birthday cake candle lights, people with night/low-light scenic scenes/background, etc.

The 2nd-Curtain Sync flash feature is one of the advantages that Canon cameras have but not other popular brands. Not sure why only some of the Canon models have the 2nd-Curtain Sync. Canon's camera chart/site http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=113 does not even list/compare the flash functions between Canon models for some reason(s).

  • "Great features and images but very fragile and not solid"
    on by camera crazy!

Pros Wide feature range, great image quality, Easy to use but also many manual features that you can use

Cons The Camera is not built well. It makes cracking sounds when you put light preasure on it as you use it. It sounds like the plastic is not secure and is shifting. Pieces are loose that shouldnt be.

Summary Canon is the best choice for modern digital camera offering the most for you money but also offering the best reliability and quality. However, this camera has an all plastic body and doesn't feel solid. for this reason I bought a 3 year warranty because it feels as if it is bound to break. The zoom and image stabilization quality is out standing as well as the pictures it produces. It is also easy to sink with your PC with the hardware that is included. The camera also doesn't lack features and options. The grip on the camera isn't the best.
