"Look no further - amazing camera"4.5 starson by radioactive1
Pros: Features, Quality, Ease of Use, AMAZING!!
Cons: None - no problems at all
Summary: If you're looking for a high quality digital, look no further, you simply can't find a better camera than the Canon S2 IS.
I owned a Nikon Coolpix 995 for several years and shoot a lot of classic car shows. While the Nikon is an excellent camera in the 3.3 megapixel range, I was looking to upgrade to something with more megapixels and with features comparable to a TTL film camera. After much research I settled on the Canon mainly because of the the reviews and features.
I was not disappointed. One of the key features of the Canon not found on many other cameras is the tilt-and-swivel LCD display. If you do low angle shots like I do, you will find this feature indispendible - giving you the ability to shoot from any position and any angle without having to lay on the ground or go into contortions to get a great shot.
The zoom lense and image stabilization features are simply second to none. The 12x zoom gives you and effective 36mm-432m capability that you would be hard-pressed to duplicate without spending many $$$ of dollars in lenses with a TTL film camera. As far as the image stabilization - I was blown away. I read the reviews and to be honest, didn't quite believe what I was reading; that is until I tried it. I tried taking pics of several darkly lit subjects at shutter speeds of less than 1/30 of a sec and found that the S2 IS not only was able to capture the shot, but that the images were free of blur and distortion. This simply would not have been possible with my Nikon or old TTL film cameras. I was blown away.
The buttons and menus on the S2 IS are intuitive and easy to use. Changing from one mode to the other are a snap. With my Nikon I often found that I had to go the manual to remember how to change a particilar setting. Not so witht the Canon. The folks at Canon really put some thought into the ergonomics and menu layout of this little gem.
I really thought that I had a great camera in my Nikon 995, but have to say that the Canon S2 IS really blows it away.
I picked up my S2 IS from Refurb Depot for $299.00 and now it's down to $267.00.
You can't go wrong with this camera. Features, function, quality and versatility are comparible to other cameras costing many $$$ more.
I highly recommend the Canon S2 IS - you won't be disappointed.
Best decision I ever made.
Some users have commented about problems with the lens cap and to those, I have to disagree. The lens cap was clearly designed for those of us that often forget to remove the lens cap before taking a picture. In that event, when the camera is turned on the lens cap is pushed off when the lens begins to extend. If Canon had not done this it would be very easy to burn out the lens motor.
The other complaint that I've read is that the camera goes through batteries. C'mon people, since when does ANY digital camera not burn up Alkaline batteries!! Get with the program people - with the availability of NiCad rechargeables, this issue is easily solved. I bought two sets of NiCad and always keep a spare, charged set on hand. After shooting over 150 pictures one weekend at a car show, I finally had to change batteries. Not bad at all.
