"don't buy canon digicams; they break after one year check the forum for s400's for more info!!!" on by misterill
Pros: great camera for about one year
Cons: after one year suddenly develops lens malfunction that renders it inoperable. costs $150 to fix.
Summary: there is a major problem with the s400 series; they break after one year check the forum for s400's for more info!!! you will see an E18 error message and the lens will no loger extend for picture taking. conveniently occurs a few months after the warrantee runs out.

I dont know why I keep buying a canon! Same thing happened to my first one that you described. My repair was $160! And I paid that 3 times! Seems they didn't repair my camera and send it back but gave me refurbished ones that would last until the warranty expired. I could have bought a new camera for what I paid in "repairs". Then I bought another 2 yrs ago - bought a 2 yr extended warranty which expired Feb 28th 2006 and on March 2nd 2006 my canon stops working! How do they do it? Anyway thats why I'm here - looking for a new camera. Think I'll skip Canon!

I have had exactly the same experience with my Canon Powershot A75 camera and am now extremely disapointed with Canon upon finding that this is a known problem. Why don't they do a recall?

there is a major problem with the s400 series; they break after one year check the forum for s400's for more info!!! you will see an E18 error message and the lens will no loger extend for picture taking. conveniently occurs a few months after the warrantee runs out.
