Manufacturer description
Stylish, pocket size fully featured digital camera. With 13 flexible shooting modes and new Canon technologies, this is the ideal camera for taking photos in all situations. The PowerShot S50 is a versatile digital camera featuring a high quality 5.0-megapixel CCD and 3x optical zoom lens. Although stylish and compact, the features of this camera are aimed at advanced amateur users with 13 shooting modes and full manual controls for exposure and focusing. The PowerShot S50 incorporates a high resolution CCD sensor with 5.0 effective megapixels (approximately 5.3 megapixels in total). This sensor allows the camera to capture still images as large as 2592x 1944 pixels and movies as large as 320 x 240 pixels. The PowerShot S50 features a highly compact and sharp 3x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 35-105mm (35mm equivalent). The lens features a maximum aperture of f2.8 (wide angle) to f4.9 (telephoto). RAW mode allows you to obtain original image data, recording the image direct from the CCD without any image processing. The PowerShot S50 has 13 shooting modes, which can be selected from a mode dial on the top of the camera, including full manual controls, and a 'Custom' mode enabling you to set and save the camera parameters. The PowerShot S50 incorporates the DIGIC processor for even better color reproduction. The PowerShot S50 supports PTP, a standard protocol. This allows driver-less image communications with computers when combined with recent operating systems (Windows XP or Mac OS). A computer using this system will automatically select the correct drivers for the camera without needing to install them. On older operating systems a driver is still required to be installed. The PowerShot S50 is equipped with Direct Print which allows easy high-quality printing by simply connecting the camera via a cable to a CP-100 Card Photo printer or to the range of bubble jet direct printers. When the PowerShot S50 is connected to the CP-100, bordered or borderless prints can be selected and a trimming function allows a portion of a picture to be expanded and printed. Simple and quick direct printing is possible with the dedicated Card Photo Printers, producing images of 300 x 300 dpi on a credit card size or 4 x 6" print. The PowerShot S50 is compatible with Bubble Jet Direct Printers connecting direct via a cable and controlled by the camera through the direct print screen. Images can be printed onto A4 size paper to 6" x 4" sized paper.User opinions

Pros: Have had this camera for about a year now. I purchased it after my a80 broke/disappointed me at which point I traded it in for the s50 at BestBuy, hoping for better quality. After a year, I can say that I've had a really good time with the Movie Mode.

It is bad indoor camera where light is less!!
Pros: Good functions and features. It is nice outdoor camera.
Cons: Dial icons chips away, beautiful moments are lost due to delay in shutter speed, red eye problems. S30 was any day better!!

Excellent camera - you'll be happy with it
Pros: I got the camera for Christmas and already took over 300 photos and movies while the kids opened their presents. Over 90% came out fantastic (extremely sharp images with vivid colors), but I did notice quite a few with "red-eye" (was able to edit out wit
Cons: I'm just concerned about the LCD screen being scratched - wish it was one of those ones that you could close to protect it. The only other thing, like I said above, was that I experienced quite a few photos with "red-eye." I'll report back again after

Affordable, small, high-res camera
Pros: NOTE: This is definitly a high end product. Not for those who just want to send pictures of the kids to grandma on AOL. I have had this camera for 3 months now and am very happy with it. Full of advanced features, still learning to use them all. Slip
Cons: The paint labels chip off, no battery life indicator, the menu system takes some getting used to, front cover feels flimsy (hasn't broken yet though). Could not get an off-brand battery to work (DO NOT BUY AN AFTER-MARKET OFF-BRAND BATTERY) stick to cann

Pros: I just bought this as my first digital camera and I am really amazed by the quality of the pictures. The colors come out great and it is simple enough for non-tech savvy people to use but retains some really advanced features to exploit. I love the Pict

Not perfect yet!
Pros: Easy to use, almost as easy as point and shoot. And it has many different shooting modes which I never use. If you buy this camera less than $350 and could get 128 meg ram and additional battery for $120 buck go ahead buy it. I still believe there is a lo
Cons: Buy a 128 Meg ram, and addional battery. Because this camera is chargable and it takes 5 hours to charge 2 hour battery. Do not hesitate to buy value packs. Camera has focus problems, you need to read manual and figure out which mode is best to take adv

For amateur, a great camera.
Pros: Tons of features and various resolution settings. Makes very nice prints up to 8 x 10. The 4 x 6 pics are wonderful. Even on LCD, picture detail is breathtaking. All I need the camera to do is give good web pics and baby prints, and it more than does
Cons: Not really any. Maybe heavier than some others, but it's not a really big deal. It's not like it's a 10-pound laptop or anything.

Exceeds Expectations
Pros: The Auto function works so well on this camera, I may never need to figure out the manual settings. I Bought this camera because of the quality of other Canon products I've owned, and this one only raises my opinion of the company. Very clear, well lit,
Cons: Battery life could be longer, and I wish there was a battery life indicator, but once you learn to pay attention to what your shooting, you can fairly well judge where your battery life is. Extra batteries are very inexpensive on e-bay, etc.

Terrific features--I must have a lemon!
Pros: Broad features. Learning curve is steep. Camera body is solid and durable. LCD is better than the competition.
Cons: Moving to the Canon S50 (5-megapixals) from a early Nikon 950 (1-megapixal) fostered high expectations. Results are mixed. In auto mode resolution is not any better than ancient Nikon. In other modes it's better but takes a lot of work to get results. Bas

Will not work with WinXP USB 1.1 or 2.0
Pros: Feels solid in hand. Good documentation. Controls are easy to find for each application.
Cons: Cannot get WinXP to recognize the camera. USB 2.0 not supported. None of this mentioned in literature or on the box. Pretty useless if one cannot transfer the pictures out!! Camera ID's itself to Linux RH9 however PTP protocol does not seem to work. W

Badly built but takes butt kickin pics
Pros: This camera is fully adjustable in manual mode, which makes it very versatile. Images also look great on screen, though I haven't yet made any prints.
Cons: The letters peel off the function wheel really quickly. The lens door feels like it's going to fall off every time I close or open it. No battery indicator until it{s too late, at which point, a little symbol starts flashing. Also, the flash is pretty muc

Sneaky Digital Camera
Pros: Black and undercover. I like the way this camera looks like a $100 35 mm snapshot camera. It's worked well for us at work and home - I love the high speed setting. Nice size too.
Cons: Nothing comes to mind, aside from the fact that now that we've played with this, we wish we had bought something that could take different lenses.

Cons: The lens sort of "makes it" a point-and-shoot, it's very limited. It's a good lens for taking everyday pictures, but it lacks a good macro setting and a stronger zoom.

Cool but poor value
Pros: RAW capture, decent image quality, good set of exposure controls, solid feel and high cool factor.

Gorgeous pix but HORRIBLE battery life
Pros: Bought this camera to replace a Nikon Coolpix 800, which I liked but which at 2 megapixels was getting pretty out of date. (Actually, I started with a Canon S40, but it died after two days of use and I wound up upgrading for LESS money at $%^#&! Dell

Simple or complex - you choose
Pros: The S50 is a small camera, yet is built like a tank. I have been in the market for a 5 megapixel camera for some time, and had purchased the Nikon 5700 at first. This camera blows it away. You can do all the same stuff as the 5700, but at half the pric
Cons: Limited movies to 3 minutes. This really isn't so bad considering alot of other makes have even shorter movie modes. It is a little on the heavy side for such a small camera, but that is the price for having a solid, durable frame.

Pros: Price was right at under $400 on eBay. Quality is superb! When coupled with my Epson Stylus C82 & photo paper, I have produced prints that are no worse than the photohut down the road. The "presets" dial works wonders especially for faster action s
Cons: The "joystick" control is cumbersome and will take some getting used to. Also, I think the shutter button could have been moved a quarter inch or more LEFT, as my finger does not rest readily on it or the zoom slider. These are quirks I can quickly adap

S30 is a better camera if 3Mpix meets your needs.
Pros: I went from a 35mm to a S30 with a 128MB card when it was the latest and greatest. Loved it. Great resolution, color, features, etc. Only wished it had a battery level indicator.
Cons: Recently gave the S30 to family member and bought a S50 with 512MB card. (Couldn't find a new S30 for sale by then.) With the S50 I am missing shots due to slow autofocus and slow shutter release after the button is pushed. In side by side comparisons wi
