Canon PowerShot S50 (discontinued)

Canon PowerShot S50

Entered CNET Catalog: 04/04/2003

SKU: S50

Manufacturer: Canon USA, Inc.

Manufacturer description

Stylish, pocket size fully featured digital camera. With 13 flexible shooting modes and new Canon technologies, this is the ideal camera for taking photos in all situations. The PowerShot S50 is a versatile digital camera featuring a high quality 5.0-megapixel CCD and 3x optical zoom lens. Although stylish and compact, the features of this camera are aimed at advanced amateur users with 13 shooting modes and full manual controls for exposure and focusing. The PowerShot S50 incorporates a high resolution CCD sensor with 5.0 effective megapixels (approximately 5.3 megapixels in total). This sensor allows the camera to capture still images as large as 2592x 1944 pixels and movies as large as 320 x 240 pixels. The PowerShot S50 features a highly compact and sharp 3x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 35-105mm (35mm equivalent). The lens features a maximum aperture of f2.8 (wide angle) to f4.9 (telephoto). RAW mode allows you to obtain original image data, recording the image direct from the CCD without any image processing. The PowerShot S50 has 13 shooting modes, which can be selected from a mode dial on the top of the camera, including full manual controls, and a 'Custom' mode enabling you to set and save the camera parameters. The PowerShot S50 incorporates the DIGIC processor for even better color reproduction. The PowerShot S50 supports PTP, a standard protocol. This allows driver-less image communications with computers when combined with recent operating systems (Windows XP or Mac OS). A computer using this system will automatically select the correct drivers for the camera without needing to install them. On older operating systems a driver is still required to be installed. The PowerShot S50 is equipped with Direct Print which allows easy high-quality printing by simply connecting the camera via a cable to a CP-100 Card Photo printer or to the range of bubble jet direct printers. When the PowerShot S50 is connected to the CP-100, bordered or borderless prints can be selected and a trimming function allows a portion of a picture to be expanded and printed. Simple and quick direct printing is possible with the dedicated Card Photo Printers, producing images of 300 x 300 dpi on a credit card size or 4 x 6" print. The PowerShot S50 is compatible with Bubble Jet Direct Printers connecting direct via a cable and controlled by the camera through the direct print screen. Images can be printed onto A4 size paper to 6" x 4" sized paper.

Safe bet - very impressive pics!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've owned this camera for about a month now. Strengths: -full manual control when you need it -excellent pics under almost all conditions - 'C' mode to save a set of custom settings (including focus and zoom settings) - excellent build quality - reasonably portable -I use a belt pouch (the S50 is a bit large for pant pockets but okay for coat pockets) Weaknesses: - red eye (but most small cameras suffer from this) - too much noise at above ISO 100 (can be corrected with free or inexpensive software but adds to the time needed to get "perfect" results) - occasional chromatic aberrations and trouble with some shades of purple (come out looking blue) - a bit heavy Conclusion: The Auto and P mode settings work great but the real reason this camera is worth the $$$ are its manual controls and its ability to produce excellent pictures. All cameras have their weaknesses which is why I still give the S50 "two thumbs up" and didn't return it during the 15 day no hassle return period.

Incredible Pics!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Strange how someone can call this camera "awesome" and then give it a negative recommendation. Anyway, when my old Kodak DC280(which I loved)finally wore out it was back to CNET to check out the latest in camera technology. WOW, things have changed for the better. While I could not find a review on the Canon S50, I did see the image comparison with other Canon digitals and was VERY impressed. I found a great price online from US1 Camera, $480 and now have a truelly wonderful digital camera, just loaded with features. I had always thought My Kodak DC280 was the ultimate, but after seeing the s50 perform it is obvious the S50 runs rings around the DC280. The detail both indoors and out is incredible. I have yet to really get into many of the features of this camera, but from a point and shoot perspective at $480 it will be hard to beat this camera. I'd say CNETs listing as an "Average Value" is not even close. Its an outstanding one.

Awesome camera with a few key features missing

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Being a avid digital camera nut since my first brick, I have used over 30 digital cameras. The features and ease of use of the S50 is awesome. However I am very supprised by two "features". Firstly there is no indication on how long the battery will last. It simply flashes a red battery light and then turns off when it is flat. As luck would have it this is at the crucial time when you are lining up for an award winning photo. Sony and others give you a relatively good indication on the available time expected from the battery. The second being the selection of resolution. It jumps from 1600x1200 to 2592x1944. What about all the other settings in between? Even though you have a Super Fine Setting, it would be better to have more options on the preferred resolutions. The final comment is on the performance of the unit under water. The under water housing did some damage to my unit. The wheel selector rubbed off all the images on the selector wheel (Auto, C, M, Av, Tv, P etc), and the power on selector at the back scratched through the casing on the back of the unit leaving a silver line showing though the black case. Under water, 80% of the photos were awesome. The lighting, colour and clarity at 15m was brilliant. This last month gave me some of the best under water photos I have taken in years. However the other 20% were not great. There was some bluring, and the auto focus seemed to focus on things in the water which were not intended e.g. bubbles, material etc. Some of the images were very dark which was most interesting. Overall, with the technology, with some user adjustment and awareness this camera will take brilliant images!

Very good quality camera

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My only complaint with this camera is that the manual focus is difficult to use -- you have to hold a button on one side of the camera and zoom in and out with a toggle on the other side of the camera. One very cool, and unexpected, feature is that you can fully control the camera with a computer, effectively allowing you to take 100% "no shake" pictures. The photos even transfer directly to the computer instead of to flash.

Point & Shooter: Love it!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm a Point & Shooter and have no idea what a macro is or for that matter what aperture does but I wanted the best possible pictures available in a digital camera. I waited for several years before pulling the trigger because I was not pleased with the photo quality of most digital snap shots I have seen. I bought the S50 last week and used it all weekend. It produces the best pictures I have ever seen from a digital camera. I took pictures in low light, well lighted, action etc. to determine which settings would work with each situation. The "auto" setting produced a picture better than any one I could produce by manually moving(and tweaking) the settings. Point & Shooters out there who don't mind paying the price, I highly recommend this camera. It will make you look like you have been taking high quality pictures for years. Someone might believe you know how to use shutter speed.

A Winner in Image Quality Versus Size

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This compact Canon digital camera really impressed me in the week I've had mine so far. I've been looking and playing with the Sony DSC-P9 for some time but took a chance with the S50 sight unseen, with a few recommendations, and my expectations have been well exceded. Excellent image quality and easy to learn interface with ample effect, memory, and capture options are not compromised by the camera's size (slightly chunkier than the Sony, but still slips into a pocket easily). Crisp and bright image replay on the rear color LCD monitor. Easy downloads to PC with USB and unimposing Canon software, and fairly quick battery recharge too. This is a really great compact digital camera for those looking for great images in different conditions without a bulky, intrusive large body reflex. The movie capture is better than on previous Canon models, though still slightly choppy at 12 frames per second (not that making movies is your first choice in features for selecting pocket cameras). Nonetheless, after looking around I believe this is the best deal for quality/function/money versus size in the compact digital camera market.A+
