"what happend to the compact flash cards?"

    by temp357 on September 3, 2005

Pros: dunno yet, the camera just came out

Cons: Canon decided to drop the compact flash format

Summary: who wants to take 8 megapixel pictures using an SD card? I have bought 3 generations of these cameras, but may have to stop with this one. Time to find another manufacturer that produces compact cameras using compact flash.

For all the people knocking the use of flash cards, last i checked I can't get a 6 gig flash card. Unless you folks are buying this 8 megapixel camera to take 1 megapixel pictures... Persoanlly I've owned over 3 to 4 cameras from this canon line and find that I'd like to have more than two pictures fit on my flash card. I also agree with the gent that was critical of the loss of the raw mode. This camera was an in between the high end and the very portable slim line. Now it is nothing more than a fat and big verion of the slim line with no upside.

I would add to my previous comment a response to this claim:

"it is nothing more than a fat and big verion of the slim line with no upside"

this really does show that this reviewer does not know a single thing about this camera and is not qualified to comment on it

To rate a camera 3/10 purely on the fact that it uses the other of the two main memory card types, and without even testing it out, is just absurd. I have one of these on order, and am having to sell my CF cards and buy SD cards. Shame for ME, but no biggie - it certainly doesn't make it a bad camera. Ruling out buying a camera purely on the memory card type seems pretty weird to me - by all trustworthy accounts (and they don't come much more so than dpreview.com) this is a truly excellent camera. As for the reviewer's claim that Canon's use of SD cards places a problematic limit on storage space, I say: do you really, really need to fit more than 572 8MP images at maximum quality onto a single (2Gb) card?!?

Ignore this fool.. CF is a waste of space on a compact camera. and CF is an older medium, it's outdated, it's physically bigger, it's more expensive and it's slower. fastest CF is 80X while the SD's are running at 150X and growing.

    I just picked up a 1gig 80X SD for $51, While it cost $70 for a 80X CF.

I've been told my a few retail stores that the switch to SD cards from Compact cards was to speed up the shot. I have had three Canon S series cameras but my latest the S60 is still slow on action pictures. They have said the SD card is quicker, so maybe that is the reason for the switch.

I consider it this way, 1gig-2gig is fine. The battery in this camera will last about 200 shots which is around teh 1gig. This wouldn't be my main camera, just something I would take to a field trip. I'll stick to my Sony 828 for any bigger shooting.

If I have to carry a spare battery, this camera got usless to me, so a larger capacity wouldn't be that usefull

Canon makes a great digital camera, I can't imagine anyone, who knows what he/she is talking about, giving the S80 a 3 out of 10! SD cards are a lot smaller and lighter than CF cards. Also, SD cards come in memory storage sizes up to 2GB! I don't think the average amateur user would ever need any more than 1GB of storage anyway. In addition, a 1GB SD card will hold plenty of high quality 8MP photos. So to those who gave the S80 a 3 out of 10, call me, I'll take it off your hands since you think so poorly of it;)

Thanks for the review but Compactflash is for the past!!! Most of the SD cards are perform as good as the age old and big Compactflash!!

Since it is obvious that temp357 has not used the camera and admits it in his "review," his score should not figure in the calculation of an overall score for this camera. So you don't like SD cards and lack of RAW; many of us, myself included, prefer SD cards and don't use RAW, so we will purchase the S80. Not liking the features (or lack of features) on a model that has not yet been released, and which you have not personally tested is hardly a basis for offering an intelligent opinion about this or any product. PLEASE DELETE THIS USER'S OPINION!

Umm Hello. It's 2005 Not 1999.... CompactFlash cards are BIG and no different than SD cards, which everyting is using now. Sorry your CF cards are coasters now, but the reality is SD is the way now.

This is no reason to not buy this camera. I have had every S series since the S20 and they are GREAT.

I find it surprising that there are already some reviews on this S80 camera. It has NOT been released. Where did these folks obtain their cameras? They could have pre release examples mean for the media but they would not be representative of what the public will be receiving after the official release date of October 10th, 2005. The camera looks extremely promising and I am eager to try one out.

Man, what are you talking about.

The best SD card on the market is 19950KB/s. The best compact flash has the same speed.

Secure Digital (SD) media is now the most common type of flash memory found in point-and-shoot digital cameras.

I can't believe Canon has dropped RAW mode. I hear they are going to do this on several new models. Great camera, but no RAW mode and old type memory cards just kill it for me. Big mistake Canon, now I'll be looking for another manufacturer, or trying to find an old S70 which does support RAW. At least I won't be paying through the nose for it !
