"This camera is GREAT."
Pros: 8 MP 3.6X optical zoom
Cons: There arent any with this camera!!!!!
Summary: This Camera is wonderful, first let me tell you about the 8mp (megapixels). Then it also has 3.5x optical zoom and 4.0x digital zoom, in total it has about 14x combined zoom!!!. It doesnt only look cool but its one of the best cameras ive ever used. I use a EOS-1Ds Mark II Digital, also by canon and this one is almost just like it. If you want a GREAT camera by canon that doesnt cost alot, GET THIS ONE!!!!!

As of Sep 20th, dealers still don't have stock. I've been advised 2 weeks at least from a number of dealers.

If you have a EOS-1D MII, then you probably haven't used the Powershot S80. So I don't know how you can say they're similar. Sure they both use the DIGIC-II processor, but that's about it. The S80 certainly improves upon the S60/70, but nowhere near an EOS-1D MII... Even though the S80 has an 8Mp sensor, it's still the same size as the 5Mp S60 or 7Mp S70, so the light gathering capabilities still suck, as evidenced by the max ISO of 400, which is not usable on either the S60/S70 (probably even worse on the S80). Compare the noise level of the 1D-MII at ISO1600 to even the ISO400 of the S series... The lens seems to be the same as the previous two S series, which means a bit too much geometric distortion at either end of the zoom range. They did improve the movie modes, though it's not mentioned whether they removed the time limit. But going back to the small form-factor SD/MMC card (meaning smaller capacity cards) is a bad idea, especially now that you're using 8Mp and can capture XGA quality movies.

This Camera has not been shipped to any dealers as yet and the Canon site has now moved the availability date to Oct 10. It was initially Sept 16.
I believe the reviewer is making this up based upon the release notice and preliminary comments of others and NOT on his own personal experience.
While I curently have three cameras using CF cards, the switch to SD is being made by many today and is not a big deal, in my opinion. -
No offense to Ryan90, particularly because I love Canon cameras and own two myself (10D and S50), but I have to question the advice of someone who claims to own Canon's 1Ds MkII SLR and tries to compare it to a point and shoot camera. The two cameras are worlds apart in terms of price, performance, and intended use. My advice would be to wait for other reviews to emerge before deciding whether the S80 is right for you.
