"Ultra Compact, Solid and Durable, Gorgeous Screen, Great Photos, Great Video Mode, Must Buy!!"
Pros: Solid construction, intuitive interface, great LCD, fabulous photos, compact and light
Cons: Plastic battery cover needs stronger hinge or made of metal.
Summary: I have now owned several Canon Digital cameras, namely s30, s40, s45, s200, s400, and now the amazing SD300. This unit just shows how Canon keeps building on the success of their previous models. The funny thing is that all the features I have wanted in a camera over the years can now be found in this little beauty.
From the moment you place it in the palm of your hand you appeciate the well thought out, solid engineering that went into this camera.
It has just enough heft and durability to be stable in your hand when shooting photos or movies.
Most digital camera manufacturers are placing their battery and memory card doors at the bottom of the camera. This is a problem when using a tripod, however the SD300 really doesn't require a tripod. It is so small and lightweight that it should be used for quick on the run photos. You can carry this little marvel with you anywhere, without noticing it in your pocket. Just make sure you don't keep it in your back pocket.
Some people have described problems with the LCD screen being fragile. I have accidentally dropped the unit on carpet or flooring with no ill effects. Naturally if you place this in your pocket and sit on it, the screen will crack. I have NEVER had a broken screen on over 15 digital cameras I have used and owned. Just treat it well.
The picture quality is very good, and the movie mode is even better than on previous models of Canon cameras. The sound reproduction and clariy is exceptional, and the various resolutions available provide much flexibility. Naturally a digital camera is not a replacement for a movie camcorder, however the Canon does an excellent job.
The menu system and controls are well placed and the menuing is very intuitive. This is really an Ultra small point and shoot camera, and has more than enough features for the above average photographer.
Battery life is quite good, and in my experience lasted over 300 pictures. Just remember that opening and closing the lens uses more juice than just leaving the camera on between shots that are a couple of minutes apart. Naturally shutting off the LCD will also add minutes, but not that necessary, unless you prefer to use the old method of shooting through the hole.
All in all this is an excellent camera and I highly recommend it. Canon continues to bring good value and superbly engineered products to the market. You can't go wrong buying this camera for most applications.
