"Another Cracked LCD Screen"
Pros: Can't tell didn't have it long enough to tell
Cons: The LCD Screen Cracked
Summary: I thought given all the "10" reviews about this camera that I would buy it in spite of being a bit pricey. I did see the review here and other places about a cracked LCD screen. I figured that the few people who reported that the LCD screen cracked on them was episodic and it would never happen to me. I received the SD500 on Monday, charged the battery and inserted the SD card that came with it, took a few pictures and waited until Thursday when the 2 GB SD card came that I had ordered. The camera was sitting on my home desk waiting for the new digital card and the weekend for the first round of serious shooting. It was NOT dropped or sat on or subjected to any other trauma -- it just sat on my desk in my home office ? where no one goes but me. When I went to put in the new SD Card I looked at the LCD Screen -- CRACKED-- and the fluid gave a Jackson Pollock type appearance to the screen, black and blue and purple blotches and streaks --useless. I have called Cannon they are sending me an RFA-- I will let you know if they treat me well or otherwise.

Our office purchased two SD500s and both now have cracked screens. I can understand one, but two? I love the quality of the photos this camera takes, but now they essentially are useless.

I am scared to use my SD500 now! I just got it am afraid to touch it. I had an SD400 for about a week before it cracked. My husband swears that he never dropped it or was rough with the case. I just thought it was "one of those things". Now that I've found this site, I'm wishing that we hadn't purchased the SD500!
I can't believe that they are ignoring all of this! There has got to be something we can do! Keep bombarding them with e-mails and phone calls! -
Oh My God, I though the crack of the LCD display on my Canon SD500 PowerShot was a freak occurrence since the camera is always on a protective pouch and the last time I used it, it was on perfect condition. But as I started to search for a good repair shop for my camera I have come across a multitude of documents from people that had the same condition happed to them. I wonder, is Canon fixing these cameras under warranty? If not, does anyone know a responsible repair shop that I can send my camera to?
Ps. To make things worst we bought six of these cameras for everyone on my team. I guest this is going to be the last time we by Canon. -
I got an SD200 last October and haven't dropped it or anything and suddenly noticed the LCD is cracked with the white/black/purple design. Sending to mail-in repair factory in Illinois - seems like this should be covered under warranty but we'll see. Nice to hear it's a common occurence because I couldn't figure out what I had done to cause it.

I purchased Canon sd500 camera after a good overall experience with s410. However, the battery was defective holding charge only 10 minutes so I barely used the camera. As many users have described, with no trauma to camera, the lcd screen cracked several days after. Canon repaired both problems quickly to their credit. But reading about all these lcd problems and comparing to s410, the screen does seem more fragile. I spoke to a friend who works at motorola who is involved in producing cellular phones lcd screens and he stated some screens have a primary or secondary screen to protect lcd panel. Is there a design flaw with the sd400/sd500 camera which doesn't have the extra primary protective screen and thus expose the fragile lcd screen to the outside? Canon should recall and rectify this if it is true. My own experience seems to indicate the sd500 is much more fragile than other lcd based devices.

What does canon say about the cracked LCD

My LCD screen cracked 2 weeks ago as well. I took some pictures, put it in its case, hung it by the strap by my side and then 20 minutes later took it out and my LCD screen was cracked. I took it to Best Buy, where I had bought it, and because I had bought it less than 6 months to a year ago (I bought it 2 months ago) and I had bought the full Best Buy warranty on it, they just swapped it out w/ another camera saying it could have been cuz of the "weather." I LOVE this camera--the look, the feel, the pictures, the movies, etc. I'll be more careful w/ it but I have to say the camera is still awesome (as long as you have a good warranty).

I had the exact same experience with an SD300. I transferred pictures at my desk, and when I picked up the camera the next morning, I found the cracked screen. Canon did repair it at NC, and returned it with a warning that the Canon camera case may itself crack the screen due to it's latch position directly over the screen. It's best to put the camera in the case so the screen faces the rear. The screen is rather fragile for a pocket camera. Apparently, my Canon case broke the screen, but the symptoms were delayed.

"I have called Cannon they are sending me an RFA"
Why use terminology that most folks won't understand? Spell it out so we know what you mean! -
I have my Canon Powershot A95 in for repair. Same problem, screen was cracked when we opened it up to use it one day, with no impact occurring since the previous time we used it. I talked to the repairman just a few minutes ago and gave an example of a person that was using a Canon and the screen cracked right before his eyes while he was holding the camera in his hand ! The repairman said that in this case, the impact probably happened beforehand and the "cracking" was a delayed reaction. I asked if we have any recourse if this is a recurring problem and he simply said that "This is NOT a recurring problem". When I sent my camera in for repair, I included a copy of a blog printout indicating that many users were having this problem. The repairman said "We do not consider the opinions of users on blogs as a sound technical basis for making warranty decisions". I'm pretty steamed about this but went ahead and authorized the $105.00 flat fee for repair.

their products are not rugged. I've never owned a Canon product that lasted. I bought the Pentax Optio 4 then the 5 ultra compact, but I want the performance and features of the Canon. If I hadn't read this review, I may well have been suckered into getting another Canon...only to have Lucy pull the football away from me again. It appears that Canon has issues with this LCD screen. I don't think the SD500 is going to qualify as a pocket camera, like my Pentax Optio S does. My Pentax lives in my pocket and goes everywhere I do - getting abused...but it's like a Timex. Keeps on ticking. Canon is high performance junk - unless you want to put it on a pedastal...this crap doesn't last like other brands.
