"Better not let it slip out of your hand!"

by ellenmaxwell on December 11, 2006

    Pros: Compact size

    Cons: Breaks unbelievably easily

Summary: I had this camera for less than 2 months, when it slipped out of my hand and fell about 2 feet to a carpeted floor. The lens became stuck out, and I couldn't turn it on anymore. I sent the camera back to Canon, and even though IT IS still covered by warranty, they want to charge me $138.19 to fix it!!! It's obviously a very fragile camera. It breaks INCREDIBLY easily, and they are not willing to fix it for less than 1/3 of what you would pay to buy it brand new. Very disappointing!!

I dropped mine too after only having it about 6 months and the lens also got stuck in the out position. I called multilple places to have it fixed and it was going to cost me a minimum of 200.00. I bout a new one and the day I brought the new one home, I figured what the heck........I can play with the old one now. So I twisted the lens
really hard and guess what .....they went back into place. The focus was really bad so I twisted it again and so far everything is working beautifully. I took the new camera back.. Give it a shot!!

I dropped this camera a few times (I know, I know!) and have never had any issues with it. It's the best pocket camera I have ever had and the video quality never ceases to amaze me!

To paraphrase Rudyard Kipling's "Natural Theology" - We drank from a poluted well and got TB. Why have the Gods afflicted me? I dropped my camera and it broke on me. Look how the Gods have afflicted me. - How 'bout a review about the quality of photos you took BEFORE you became a klutz?

I can understand being frusrated that a camera completely breaks with a short drop onto carpet. However, the other comments are right, you shouldn't drop this type of equipment. If you're the type of person who will drop things no matter how delicate (like me, especially when my two year old grabs it from my hands and cries when I try to get it back), buy it from somewhere like BestBuy and get the $80 insurance that will cover the camera for 4 years even if you purposefully throw it in a swimming pool.

Enlightening us which camera can be rated above 1 in this catagory?

Im amazed when people think that dropping a complicated, delicate item that has so much technology inside is OK? HELLO people, had you been more careful this would not have come up and the manufacturer has nothing to do with it.
Im sure these same people would be complaining about costs if the manufacturer spent extra costs on making the camera bulletproof. This is why WATERPROOF cameras tend to cost more, they are designed to be dropped into water. Whether it is carpet or cement, a drop causes deep shock which can jar loose things and shift the entire body structure of a complicated product with closer tolerances. Oh I only crashed the car into a bush, it should have done better then hitting a brick wall? HELLO

I never ever use my camera without the wrist strap provided. The camera is small and sleek the way we like it but small and sleek can be slippery. When a company gives you a great product at such a good price its because they are mass producing them which saves time and expense and you money. You made a mistake and now expect someone to take your camera apart and waste hours trying to fix it in the time it would take to make over a hundred new cameras and do it for cheap??? I suggest you get a new Canon or pay to fix the one you broke and this time take better care of it.

I agree the camera is easy to drop. Look at the size. I've dropped mine twice with no adverse effects. Wear a strap and your problems go away. Can't fault the camera for the user's inability to hold onto it. It's not a Frisbee.
