"Best compact camera available."
Pros: 5X zoom\ 24mm wide angle lens, 720p video recording and touch screen interface.
Cons: Touch screen can be a little hard to work with and the max 720p record time is 10 minutes.
Summary: The Canon SD980IS has to be one of the best compact cameras available. It packs a lot of great options in such a small camera. Just like most of Canons cameras it takes great photos and the 720p recording is amazing too. The only draw back on the 720p recording is that you can only record 10 minutes at a time, and the battery life for play back of videos on a TV is about 2 hrs.
What really sold me on this camera is that it has a very good 5X zoom lens. Most cameras this size, only have a 3X or 4X max. Also, the lens is a 24mm wide angle lens, which for me was only available on my large Nikon dSLR camera.
The touch screen is fun way to navigate though the tools and options, as well as flipping through all of your photos. It?s almost like the iPhone but the touch sensitivity on the camera can be little tricky.
Right now it is hard to find a compact carrying case for this camera, because the camera is about ¼ inch longer then most compact cameras. BestBuy does sell Lowebro case that works great for me.

It doesn't allow for use of the optical zoom while recording movies, but the optical stabilization can be turned on.

Does it allow optical zooming when taking movies? Does it have optical stabilization while taking photos AND while taking movies?
