"Mediocre image quality"
2.0 starson by SherAtBeachPros: LCD screen
Cons: Mediocre image quality. Photos are not crisp as expected, colors seemed to besomewhat muted.
Summary: Based on my previous experience with other Canon digital cameras, I expected the photos from the new Canon SX20 IS to be very good. Unfortunately, the photos were not crisp as expected. In addition, the photo color also seemed to be somewhat muted. I took the Canon SX20 IS back to the camera store and exchanged it for a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35, which produces superb photos and good video clips.

I bought this camera in Oct 2009 and found it to produce great quality photographs. I would have to agree with other people who replied to this post and say that great pictures are taken outside of general camera presets. You have to learn the camera and your surroundings. How much did the user play with ISO settings, WB, or TV/AV settings before making this determination about this camera?

I picked this camera up at the end of August and have found the image quality to be great indoors and with flash. The image quality in low light situations is not so good. I have found the colors to be great and there are quite a few options to change how vibrant the colors are including a custom mode. Unfortunately the manufacturer only includes a getting started manual so finding out these advanced features either requires trial and error or installing the cd and reading on your computer. And the video is just amazing: 720p stereo at 30fps!

I purchased my SX20 IS in early September and have used it quite heavily. I have found this camera to take excellent pictures with very crisp images and vibrant colors. A note to users of cameras with advanced features would be to read the documentation that comes with the camera. It can be extremly helpfull in understanding what options the camera has and what settings are available. Also if you are using the "point and shoot" preset scene modes, be sure to pic an appropriate setting. For example, using an outdoor scene such as "beach" in an indoor setting will almost always produce a dim, grainy image.

Very subjective review.
I also purchased this camera to replace an older model Canon and have not used it long enough to verify the aforementioned shortcommings.
In fact, my impression is the pctures are well balanced in color and contrast and the zoom is phenominal.
I am going on a cruise in a week and plan to give the video capabilities a workout.
