"An excellent digital camera from a surprising source"
Pros: Flexible modes, straightforwad controls, good battery
Cons: Small and inconvenient buttons for shifting modes from picture to review or movies
Summary: Purchased this camera to replace a lost Sony Cyber-Shot after researching the many available products on the shelves in Japan. It has now done several strenuous trips and has produced very satisfactory results.
There are many pre-set modes for various conditions and objectives. After a couple of weeks, one learns what is available and where to find it quickly in the menu. Under most conditions, the default "Best Shot" works very well but difficult settings such as portrait with scenery and backlight improves the quality of the images. There are a full range of manual settings for those with the time, experience, and ability to use them properly (definitely NOT me!) The picture stabilizing mode works remarkably well, especially when taking shots in low light. Worth the purchase just for this feature!
Battery life is good. A full 512MB SD card was filled with one charge (though very pictures requried flash). The camera takes MPEG-4 movies though this tends to wear the battery down quite quickly.
Moving between picture and review modes requires pressing very small buttons located on the top back edge of the camera. These buttons are NOT intuitive and quite frankly, my stubby fingers occasionally have to take several jabs to activate them. The controls to activate these functions on the Sony camera were much more convenient.
Overall, I consider this an excellent purchase with very satisfactory results. This camera should be considered when comparing similar products in the same price category. When compared feature for feature, this one is a bargain. And, to plagerize from a rival watch manufacturer, this camera takes a licking and keeps on clicking!
