"Great design - Not So Good Pictures"

by Billy Nichols on November 14, 2006

Pros: Design, User Interface, Size, Battery Life, Dock (yes, I said Dock), Screen Size and Price

Cons: Image quality (That's a pretty BIG con...it is a camera you know), Lot's of pixelization/noise.

Summary: I've been researching cameras for about 4 months - and searching for the perfect "one". I need to replace my out-dated Fuji 4700. The Casio EX-Z700 has a beautiful design and some wonderful features, but the picture quality was quite a bit below average. So, here are the cool things I like about this camera...

1.The Interface- It's great. Probably the easiest to use out of all cameras out there. It's just very well laid out, full of function and with very little confusion. The buttons are in the pefect place and it's a cinch to navigate.

    2. The dock - Now, some people complain about docks, but it's very nice to NOT have to remove the battery when you need to charge it (i've seen a lot of battery doors break). And, with a camera that has a battery life this good, it's not like you're going to have to pull out your charger in the middle of a party - which takes us to #3.

    3. Battery life - coming from an old AA battery camera that could only get about 20 pictures in a charge, this battery is amazing. Think of it like a cell phone, you can use it for several days before it needs recharging. So, the dock is no big deal, just pop it in when you're sitting at your computer.

    4. Size - It rocks. Smaller IS better - but it also has a HUGE LCD which makes it a pleasure to use.

    THE ONLY BAD -
Image quality (that's a pretty big "bad", huh?). Lot's of noise when shooting still-life in controlled lighting environments - the edges were very pixelated and distorted. Low light shots were not very nice either. It you are mainly going to shoot in bright sunlight, this would probably be a great camera.

    CONCLUSION:
All I want is for this exact camera to give me a photograph that is as good as a Canon - and it would be THE PERFECT camera. So, it boils down to this - do you buy a camera for the best possible pictures, or do you buy a camera for the best possible functionality? It's a shame we have to sacrifice one or the other.

So, if you want a great photograph, get a Canon. If you want a cool camera, get the Casio - but you can't have both.
