I have been very impressed with this camera.

Pros: point and shoot is excellant for that "quick" shot.

Cons: the heavy barrel takes getting used to.

Review: Over all I find this camera more than meets my needs as a beginning photographer. It allows me to take excellant pictures while learning the finer points of photography.

Love this Camera

Pros: Great Picture Quality, Swivel Lens, Powerful Zoom

Cons: Large and bulky

Review: I have had this camera for about a year and a half. I absolutely love it. Takes great pictures as well as movie clips. Easily downloads to the computer. One of the great features is the swivel body - so many times taking pictures outside there is sun glare on the screen but with this camera I swivel it and am looking down at the camera while taking pictures foward - I have gotten to where this is my prefered method of taking pictures. Only down side of this camera is its size which is a trade off for the great zoom. Sometimes makes it difficult to carry but in the end definately worth it. Also its now about half the price I originally paid - great deal!

At least two ways of doing everything!

Pros: Heavy, and kind of bulky. Great for planned photography and professional pictures as the exposure can be modified before exposure. Allows multiple shots of same subject with alteration of each shot. Reduces dependancy on other software. Just love it!

Cons: Not for Sunday 'point and shoot' snap shots as it is bulky and heavy. An experienced 35mm photographer has an advantage. Has a long learning curve and a lot of buttons to fully exploit the camera's capability.

Pros: Replaced my SLR with this camera after seeing my nephew with one. Awesome pictures! Not recommended for novice. Strap got caught on a pole as I was walking, slammed camera on the floor and to my surprise NOTHING (not even a dent or scratch) happened.

Cons: Comes with 32MB card...what is that all about? Battery life not the greatest and expensive to purchase. Heavy & Bulky for trips, but makes up for it in picture quality (weigh what's important to you).

Cons:

Review: I had to write my response in the "Don't recommend" spot to comment on these complaining idiots. I have a sony digital camera and it works just fine. I have never had any problems and all my shots have come out perfect even on lower settings. As for the memory stick...it holds over 240 pics (16MB) on the lowest setting and the pictures print amazingly well with amazing detail so what are you people crying about. I understand some foreigners are going to buy sony products but do not complain about the price of the camera or the sticks. The price may be high because your countries currency is so low. For those of you who have typed messages here with bad English...get a dictionary and learn how to read and write before learning how to take pictures. As for the landscape photographer...why do you need to take pictures in the dark and if you did landscapes dont move so a slow shutter speed shouldn't matter. For those who are upset with the design get over it and stop crying. Things are bound to change do to technological advances so just stop crying or go back to your antiquated 35mm camera's and leave digital photography to those how know how to use it.

Took it back to the store and complained until I got my money back.

Best camera I've owned

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As for the size, while it appears bulky I found the camera to be light and very comfortable in my hands. The controls on the barrel perfectly fit my thumb while supporting the barrel. I like being able to switch to the viewfinder when bright lights make the LCD difficult to see. The pictures are some of the best I have seen on a digital. The battery and memory sticks seem to last just fine. The only complaint I have is that I keep putting my thumb on the screen, but I will get used to it and I'm sure it won't be a problem for long. I have had this camera for 3 months and everytime I use it I am amazed by it's flexibility.

BEST CONSUMER 5MP CAMERA AVAILABLE

Pros:

Cons:

Review: All I have to say about some people who write reviews is "Wow". It's beyond me why you would spend $800+ on a digital camera that you don't know how to use. "Unneccessary Gadgets"- There aren't any. The camera is a perfect design. It is designed to be the closest consumer camera to an SLR without the $2000 price tag. I can see why some people might consider some of the features over kill, but that's why sony and other manufactors make a LOW line of cameras. As for people complaining about Sony's memory stick, try their memory stick pro. That's their first 256MB card, works great. I have never had a problem with the camera. And to the person who dropped it two feet from the ground and shattered his LCD, why are you dropping your $800 camera. You should seriously consider wearing the neck strap that sony provides with the camera. I have never had any concerns with the camera except for the battery. ALL batteries will eventually die, but certain retail companies, like Bestbuy, offer an extended warranty that covers the camera and the battery. I would never go away from Sony because they have a great Carl Zeiss lens, GREAT design, and EXCELLENT picture quality. By far I would recommend the Sony F717 to anyone looking for a high quality digital camera filled with great features.

Buyers beware!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: To all prospective buyers out there, here's a thought: While, undoubtedly, this the F717 is one of the best 5MP cams out there, quality can be an issue. Sure, the camera is loaded with great features and such, but what good is it if some silly little thing breaks (and it will!) after a year? Quality problems have always been an issue with Sony. I've worked with a huge electronics store chain (similar to Best Buy) in Germany for quite a few years and know what I'm talking about. Complaints about and returns of Sony products have by far exceeded those of any other brand. And don't underestimate costs of repairs! Often times, they're 2/3 or more of the original purchase price! Why do you think Sony gives the lousiest warranties? If you do need to buy a Sony product, make sure you get the extended warranty at the store you're buying it at. You will need it!

Awesome camera for photo enthusiasts

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I wasn't going to write a mini-review until I had a quick read of the comments here. The "cons" of this camera seem to much of a stretch to make this camera a bad buy or the "worse camera ever" as one reviewer wrote. First and biggest supposed "con" is it's size and weight. I like bulky cameras... it feels more like a serious camers than the "matchboxes" that other digicams are. Try lugging around all the standard film SLR equipment that matches what the DSC-F717 can do, and suddenly you'll be impressed by it's portability. A bad battery is sighted as another con. Last time I checked, ALL batteries run out, and I defy anyone to find me an electronic device where the battery isn't a weak point. Until batteries themsleves are replaced by another form of portable power, it will remain an Achilles' heel for any device that is not plugged in. As far as the bad service from Sony... well that's a corporate issue, not a product failing. Lastly, users here have mentioned that the 128MB card holds only 21 pics at the highest quality. I use the 1280x960 setting (second lowest res.) and my pictures are clear even displaying them and printing them full size on a sheet of 8.5x11 photo paper. Unless you want a poster-size picture, isn't that good enough? The storage then jumps from 21 to over 200. And lets be honest, you aren't going to notice the difference anyway, when viewed on a screen. Since buying this camera, I've been able to take amazing pictures with it. Everything from fantastic scenery shots in oddly lit settings, macro shot, amazing depth-of-field shots. I even took a picture of a helicopter and the rotating blades appeared still in the picture! I am being continually imressed by what this camera can do.

Excellent images and quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used from 4x5 to 16mm over 35 years and find the images from the Sony F717 to be exceptional and usable for commercial projects. A recent wedding shoot with 35mm, video, and the Sony resulted with the preferred images being produces by the Sony. The caveats are: have extra memory sticks (now out in 256mb), use aux. lighting (just as with any film camera), and practice with the camera to make the best use of all the features. Enjoy.

A very good digital camera...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I really do like this camera. It has lots of great features. I am coming from having an SLR and not being able to afford a digital SLR right now. The F717 was a perfect fit for me. The large lens is great since I am used to holding the lens like that on my SLR, the weight also reminds me of an SLR and not some cheap Digital Camera. The picture quality is great and so is the battery life. There are now 1gb Memory Sticks on the market so space is no longer an issue with Memory Sticks.

CNET should have rated it higher!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am in love with my new F717! Sony deserves props for considering functionality in its bells and whistles. Each of the camera's unique settings are there for a reason - to solve the problems that so many other digital cameras have. Focusing is down to a science - there are auto controls or manual for any conceivable situation - even shooting in the dead of night! Despite the plethora of settings, the menus are relatively intuitive to navigate as well. The giant lens does make this camera a bad choice for someone looking for something that will fit in your pocket (unless you want to impress the ladies... :). It's worth the weight to get this level of lens power though! The close-ups are gorgeous! And actually, once I actually got the camera in my hands, it felt much less bulky and awkward than I expected. The price is a little high - but you get what you pay for. It is worth every cent.

I love my F717

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I guess you can classify me as am an amateur enthusiast photographer. I've used my trusty Nikon 6006 SLR for years, love it, and have many wonderful pictures to show for it. I didn't want to buy a digital camera until I was convinced the picture quality would be comparable to my 35-mm shots. Well, I'm not giving up the SLR for some specialized work, but my new DSC-F717 fits the bill in almost every other way. I love the size! Some folks seem to think a digicam has to be able to fit in your pocket to be worth buying. I am not one of them. Frankly I prefer a camera that feels like a camera and not like a pack of cigarettes. This one has heft and enough weight and substance to it to be very comfortable to me. I have no trouble taking either horizontal or vertical shots, and the features really are pretty easy to learn. Just playing around I took a picture of my cat just last night in near total darkness using both the Nightshot and Nightframe features, and the pictures were great. (One is that greenish infrared color, one is regular color. Don't understand how they do it but it's neat! I have taken pictures of the Blue Angels at an airshow, and the shots captured the supersonic planes in midair; couldn't have done better with my SLR. I've spent a lot of time with the autotimer feature trying to take some self portraits, and I did have trouble getting the autofocus to work under that circumstance. but finally figured it out and got some great shots. It's just like any other piece of equipment. Once you learn how it works, you've got it made. You just have to take the time to learn. I've found 128 meg Sandisk memory sticks for under $50, so I don't think the cost of memory is excessive. I bought a 4-year extended warranty from Best Buy, not really liking Sony's lousy 90-day warranty, but I LOVE THIS CAMERA and intend to use it for years! I think it's worth every penny, especially now that it has dropped from $1000 to $800.

InfoLithium Battery = Achilles' heel

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The Sony Cyber Shot DSC-F717 is a wonderful camera : The pictures are beautiful, it's easy to operate and it impresses family and friends. People told this before and I think the raving reviews are very true. BUT... My camera doesn't work anymore. This is because the camera refuses it's own info-lithium batteries. After I disconnect the charger, and turn the power on, the camera starts up and before I can take a picture, I get the message " For InfoLithium only". After this errormessage the camera shuts down, and is very difficult to switch on again, only to produce the same errormessage. I have been to several shops and tried several brandnew (charged) Sony, Varta and other brand batteries. None of them work succesfully. So it's not about the battery, but the camera itself. Sony charges 690,00 euro's for this repair, with a guarantee that ends when I step out of their building.

Quite The Camera

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Wow. I am really quite amazed at the images that this camera takes... This is journalism quality folks. Consumer Digital cams won't be above 5 megapixels for awhile, so this is the product to buy to stay on top for awhile. Also this cam supports the new memory sticks coming out (256MB, 512MB, 1GB). I love the cam!

It's worth it!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: O.K. folks, I'm going to add my voice to the already many who have voiced a positive vote for this camera. I spent a great deal of time researching everything I could find on the net AND in the print media in helping me to finally make my decision. I purchased it from a retailer that gave me thirty days to review it. During that time I discovered that in dark conditions, the camera wouldn't focus correctly. I checked on the Sony web site and found that it did indeed have a problem and sent it in. It was returned to me in 48 hours from their repair site and I didn't pay a dime!!! Thanx Sony. Am totally satisfied...you will be to.

Took my Olympus C5050 back and got a F717!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: And I couldn't be happier! What a HUGE difference. Of course, there is also a little price difference, but the quality of this camera--the pictures AND overall design of the camera itself--make it worth it. Spend the extra money and go with this camera. The focus is amazingly fast and makes the C5050 feel very slow. Not all 5 MP cameras are the same. The F717 just has an awesome feel to it and fits in your hands, perfectly. Love the way you can tilt and rotate the lense, separate from the camera...pretty cool and comes in handy. Color and sharpness are amazing! Oh and the Nightframing feature allows amazing shots in total darkness...you won't believe how it looks like you've got every light in the room on. This feature alone is worth the price of admission--especially if you're used to indoor shots, turning out horribly. I am so many times more happy with this camera than the Olympus C5050. I know there is also a price difference, but spend the extra money and get this camera. It'll be worth when you see the first pictures!

Great Camera, Unique Design

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Many people complain about the design of the Sony DSC-F717, but why would you buy the camera if you didn't like the design. The camera is totally unique and has some amazing features. I read a review that said this camera was horrible at low light shots... whoever said that was an idoit. This camera is by far the best camera out there for operating with low-light situations. For those of you concerned about the recall, below is a link to a site that names the serial numbers that have been recalled by Sony. For those looking for one of the best digital camera reviews on the internet, I suggest www.dpreview.com . http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/news/dsc.html

Poor camera with stupid design.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: bad, bad, bad. i did not expect much from sony, when i tested it i was even disappointed. First the silly design .. i suppost sony think everyone will only shoot horizontally, of course this is not the case, i can't find a comfort position to handle it horizontally. Second, the image quality. I was first impressed by the Carl Zeiss lens quality and day time pic, then i was totally disappointed to use it in low night and slow shutter. The focus is ok but when shutter speed is set to lower than 1/2 sec, noise started to come out, i tried it on some night scene and my pal said it looks like i capture it from TV on a poor quality capture card, and it use only expensive Sony flash. Third it use expensive MS and sony battery, you know the reason why that is a problem isnt it. A 128MB MS holds only 21 high quality picutures, CF or SM cost half the price of MS. Although the sony battery last quite long, when it is dead, it is. I do a lot of pic in coountryside so there is a cost of another battery. After a few weeks intensive turning, the hinge between lens and body start to loose - i'd expect a more durable camera for the price. So there is the carl zeiss lens, and sony has wasted it, the colour is just no good, compared to Fuji or Nikon or Canon forget about the pix, you can see Canon G-2 with 4M or Fuji S602 with only 3M doing better, this camera is a completely of money.

Best Digicam for under $1,000

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the third digital camera upgrade I've made in just over 6 months. Began with a Sony P-51, then a Sony S75. Both of the former were good cameras, but I wanted a camera with more of the traditional SLR feel to it, with the control of an SLR. The F717 fills this desire perfectly. The picture quality is amazing, with very little touchup work required. The colors are accurate and well balanced, lots of control over exposure, white balance, focus, etc. The Night Shot and Night Framming features are unique and could be quite valuable. The only thing I don't like is that Sony is still "sticking" with the Memory Stick format (pun intended). If other manufacturers had picked up this format, it wouldn't have been such an issue, but the higher capacity sticks are delayed until who knows when. Overall, it's a great camera at a great price for the features included. If you are considering buying this camera, don't consider it, DO IT!

Outstanding.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was in the market for a high end Digital Camera. It came down to the Canon D60, the Nikon D100, or the Sony DCS 717. Once I realized I can do without the inter-changable lens, and 1 extra megapixel, the Sony was a no-brainer. I also saved about two thirds of what I would have spent for a complete Canon of Nikon System. And you can't beat the features on this Sony.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Best auto-focus for the widest set of lighting conditions. It's hard to say enough about how useful and superior the autofocus is. Great lens. Very good ergonomics --- balanced, easy to handle. Intuitive. Easy to learn and use. 5 megapixels produces great photos. Color balance seems perfect. I'm glad I waited 'til this camera became available.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Primary purpose is for short duration astophotography, both afocal and piggy-backed. So far I'm quite happy with the results. The camera functions perfectly and the only boo-boos are my own. I prefer the size/weight of the 717, this is not a pocket camera. I have had no trouble installing and using the software. Battery life is great. Image quality excellent. Glad I have it.

excellent overall, shame does not have a real wideangle

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I own a Sony DS75 and a Nikon 5000, after a few weeks of use of 717 I have scrapped my Nikon 5000 (not really: I gave it to charity) The DS75 is still good for me when I travel light Compared with some 6 megapixels cameras (Canon D60 and Fuji S2 this latter the best of the lot), the prints up to 11x14 have same quality. Especially good are the color balance, the reduced noise at high speed. The lens is a masterpiece ! only lacks real wideangle (the wideangle add-on is flared and is only acceplable if stopped down)

Fast Shutter Response!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Having owned two other digital camera and several 35mm cameras over the years, I pretty knew what I wanted in my next digital camera. I had my head set on a Nikon 5700, since I?ve owned several Nikon?s before and own a Nikon dedicated flash, but after weeks of reading articles and actually playing with the demos in the stores, I chose the Sony and very pleased I did. There were two important factors in my decision, 1) shortest shutter lag time, and 2) easy of operation. Shutter lag has always driven me nuts, especially since my main subject is my six-year old son. The Sony?s shutter is appreciable faster than the Nikon (and most other cameras I've tried), the zoom responds much faster, and other controls are right where you?d expect them-easy to find without taking the camera away from your eye. Changing shooting modes and settings is very intuitive. The Sony you can pretty much figure out without the book. I was just plain lost on the Nikon. Also, the Sony will take standard camera filters. True, it won?t take a Micro drive and the shape is odd and the camera seems a bit heavier, but those shortcomings are way offset by the speed. In picture quality, I?m sure the Nikon 5700 and the Sony are on par with one another, but if you?ve ever lost a great shop because of shutter lag or because you were fumbling between settings, then you?ll appreciate the Sony as I do.

Terrible Support From Sony

Pros:

Cons:

Review: my camera is now at the repair center for the 3rd time. i've found the service people to be incredibly rude, and not helpful at all. they are poorly educated about their products. i wish I had purchased from someone other than direct from Sony Electronics as they REFUSE to exchange the camera for a new one. The consumer design at Sony is amazing, but the quality and service are questionable at best.

Pretty close to perfect!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all, thanks to all of you who took time to review the Sony DSC-F717 before me...your reviews weighed heavily on my decision to purchase it. No camera is perfect, but the ?F717 comes closer than any camera I have owned. I?ve used it since Christmas, and taken some GREAT pictures. The bulky Carl Zeiss lens results in very little image distortion under all zoom conditions. Resolution is fantastic, and noise performance is superb in low light situations (much better than my Kodak DC4800). I sent the camera back to Sony as part of the HAF recall, and the process was quick and painless, with 3-day door-to-door turnaround! The Holographic Auto Focus results in sharp images most of the time, but I can repeatedly create scenarios where it results in worse focus, which is why I leave it off by default. I like the fact that I can zoom in to inspect a picture that I have just taken to determine if I need to retake it (which is not very often). I have also found the pixel intensity histogram feature to be very useful for getting shutter speed right the first time in low light, non-flash situations. The included software installed without a hitch on my Windows 2000 Professional (service pack 3) computer. I frequently use the hot-shoe to mount my Nikon SB-26 external flash unit with great results (too bad there aren?t any pins to permit TTL exposure options; I must set my SB-26 to Auto Mode). Also, I have noticed that blues are slightly washed out in flash pictures (probably due to over compensation of the white balance in flash mode), but it?s not very noticeable. I am surprised that for a camera of this quality, Sony didn?t include any color saturation controls. Also, Sony chose to use the ?memory stick? format, which is not as popular. The supplied battery results in about 3.5 hours of use per charge. Overall, I would recommend the ?F717 to anyone looking for a high-performance camera with tons of features.

Great pictures and almost a 35mm replacement

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a great camera for for those interested in more than just point-and-shoot. Lots of options that will allow you to replace your 35mm in all but the most extreme (non-professional) cases. The rechargeable battery has long life and the USB interface works great for pulling you pictures off the camera. Dicount pricing gives you the opportunity to add memory or other accessories. Regarding the review noting a "recall," there is a focus issue with certain production serial numbers. Information is at http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/news/dsc.html.

Sony...Need I say more?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Would like to say a few things about the negative posts. Recall issue- F717 from the F707?? Hello!! Drivers- Since when do people use the "outdated" drivers included in any product? Back-up-User error not the cameras fault! Sheesh!! Damage- Hrmmmm I just dropped a $1000 camera thats mostly electronics/wires/glass from anywhere from 5-6 feet. You do the math and be more careful! Tech Support-When is tech support ever good? Sucky Quality- Put yopur glasses on kid! Non pocketable- Well duh!! Look at the specs before you buy or wear baggy pants! and actually the camera fits in my BDU's, so it IS pocketable. This camera is another fine quality item from SONY. However if you are looking for a cheap, inexpensive throw it in the back pack and go type digital camera then DO NOT spend $1000 on a camera. Go buy the DSC S75/S85 or the P series.

For Jerome

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all, each 128 mb memory stick holds up to 60 pics at its highest image quality setting. So I do not know what Jerome is complaining that his 3 memory sticks only hold 21 pics. I too have mine serviced thru Sony for focusing issue and had no problem getting it back in 2 days. And finally, you do not even need the software comes w/camera if your OS is Window XP, if not you can easily download it from Sony support site.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Have taken a couple of thousand shots now with my F717 - really an awesome camera. Quick response time, superb detail and picture quality. Still groping for the zoom occasionally. I have three 128mb memory sticks and just slap them in my laptop and can download a full card in a matter of minutes. Not much to complain about - this is an excellent camera. Coupled it up with the Canon i850 printer and the 8X10 prints are just amazing, even when cropped.

Great all in one Digital Camera

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had been debating when to get a digital camera, as they tended to be expensive and inferior to film. A few years back I had an opportunity to shoot with what was then a top of the line digital SLR. I couldn't believe how pixilated images got if the lighting changed ever so slightly...I won't even talk about the color reproduction. I finally decided to look at digital cameras when I was able to use an Olympus E-10. For those who like the feel of a SLR, I suggest looking at that line. It's one of the only digital cameras that have a viewfinder separate from the CCD. I decided to go with the Sony, though, because it got the highest reviews of simple automatic features with the added benefits of manual over-rides. I'm a photo enthusiast only, and it does everything I'd want it to. I am pleased with the decision. No matter where I am, the Sony seems to be able to get true colors in automatic mode...even in the dead of night! The only complaint I might have is the viewfinder. It's a digital display that doesn't have a high resolution....so it's hard to do any manual focusing. Other then that, it's a great camera. It's definitely going to replace my favorite film based camera...the Canon AE-1 (best short and sweet SLR ever made!).

Review: A few months ago I purchased a Nikon 5700 for $1200. Over the past few months I have used that camera to take some very nice pictures as long as I was outside. Inside the quality was terrible. I experienced routine autofocus hunting which usually resulted in no lock or an incorrect lock. I missed many memorable shots simply because the Nikon 5700 refused to focus quickly and accurately with normal indoor lighting. I was looking in the review forums and came upon the Cybershot F717. From descriptions and reviews I decided to give the camera a try. I have not been able to get the camera to fail while getting a positive focus lock in record time. So far I haven't missed a single shot. With "Nightframing" no light level is too low for a beautiful picture. For all this wonderful performance I only had to pay $999 which allowed me to pick up (2) 128MB memory sticks for the same price as the Nikon 5700 with nothing other than its factory card which I might add is half the size of the Sony factory card (16mb vs 32mb). If you are looking for a quality camera with enough features to keep you occupied and creative while not having to deal with some of the problems of the competition, the Sony F717 is the rig for you.

"New Memory Stick to Forget Older Devices?"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am *this* close to purchasing one of these cameras, but the Memory Stick limitation has been the only problem for me. I'm sure most people do not need to shoot at the highest resolution possible, but I do. And if Jerome (06-Jan-2003 08:42:51 am) posting is right, ~7 images per 128MB Memory Stick just ain't going to cut it. So... surely Sony is developing new Memory Sticks to address the shotcomings of current Memory Sticks, right? Right! (Let the rumor mill start churning...) One quick search of the Internet found a little gem at <http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/computers/storage/story/0,2000023527,20270663,00.htm>. But the author (By Richard Shim, Special to ZDNet -- Dated: December 13, 2002) leaves it somewhat up in the air whether the new "Memory Stick Pro" cards will support older devices that use current Memory Stick technology. That debate is apparently still up in the air... with Sony juggling the answer. If anyone has any legitimate inside info on Sony's new Memory Stick Pro cards -- AND -- if they will be basckwards compatible with either the Sony Cybershot DSC-F717 and/or F707... then please contribute to this thread. Recalled after 7 days

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I received the camera as a gift and seven days later I checked the Sony website to find out it had been recalled. Check yours, since Sony will NOT contact you. It then took three days and three phone calls to even get a shipping label to return the unit for repairs. Customer service is A JOKE. I asked about software (I think something is missing). Sony would not confirm if there was anything missing and told me that I had to go back to the dealer or purchase it from Sony. More poor support. The memory stick is a severly limited storage device. I like to print and display my photos, so I use the highest setting. With three 128mb sticks I can store only 21 images-less than one short roll of velvia. The sticks cost about $280-velvia about $10 developed. That doesn't count the cost of storage devices or computer to empty the sticks. Why does Sony provide only proprietary memory storage? I can guess and so can you.

skip photography class

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My 1st digital camera (My last?) digi cam resolution finally competing w. film slr's. Experiment with shutter/film speeds, aperture etc. and see the results INSTANTLY! Needs better batteries and bigger memory sticks but otherwise, I love this camera.

Worth the price.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great balance of automatic and manual operation. Image quality is top notch. Lots of features = lots of fun! Don't be shy (like me), get as many 128 sticks as you can afford.

I'm Very Very impressed..

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First impression: I got this camera yesterday. My only negative comment is this: You seemingly can't change from standard-flash to red-eye reduction without going back to the setup mode; this is something I can easily do with my Nikon Coolpix 850. Other than that, WOW!

In many ways, better than my D1X

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When I'm going somewhere just to photograph, I almost always take the D1X, but the complement of lenses I also take usually make this at least a 10 pound proposition. With the new DSC-F717, there are a shrinking number of things I really need the Nikon for, and when travelling, it's not really close - the Sony almost always gets tossed in the bag. Zeiss lenses are legendary in their quality, and this partnership has served Sony well. The Sony/Zeiss lens is the equivalent of about a 24-120 on the Nikon DSLR, and there is nothing made for the D1X in that range of zoom that comes close to the speed or accuracy of the Zeiss. In fact, I purchased the 717 *instead* of spending $500 on the equivalent 24-120 f3.5-5.6 Nikon lens. The primary reason for choosing the Sony over it's competitors: battery life and speed. While the non_retracting zoom lens is bulkier, the time from power on to first shot is much, much faster than the competition, and as most photographers know, those few seconds are often the difference between getting and missing a shot. Finally, while a lot has been made of 8x zoom range, there are a lot of compromises that have to be made to get that range of zoom, and the Sony 1.7x teleconverter is the one accessory that I'd carry to solve that problem. Just the equivalent Nikon lens alone weighs twice as much as the 717+TC combo. The 717 is my sixth digital camera, and I'm constantly amazed at how much better each one gets.

Awsome Equipment But Sony Online Support Is Lacking

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Unbelievable photos even in difficult situations however the largest memory stick is of small capacity ( I could carry extra sticks )and I have been trying to find out for 2 days if the loud "clicking" in nightframing mode is normal with no success.

superior pictures

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Once you master all the features,(and that takes a while) the camera is unbelievable. Pictures amaze everyone who sees them. Yes, it's heavy; but no more than your standard 35mm slr.

Simply AWESOME

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased the 717 while overseas in Thailand. I wanted a killer digital and trust me, I got just that. This camera is a MONSTER. I took incredible pictures on the camera's highest res of the temples in and around Bangkok. Priceless images with incredible detail, color balance and clarity. Pretty much, without spending more than 5 mins with the instruction book you are ready to rock and take great shots. I am going back to the instruction book to learn about the finer details of the camera. My friend who was along with me took pictures with a 35mm camera and had those pictures put on CD. After comparing the shots in terms of clarity and color, the difference is ASTOUNDING. Go digital, go 717 and you will never be unhappy. Not to mention, the camera is a real head-turner. It looks awesome and it gets alot of comments. Super cool is the laser night image system. I had before this an Olympus 1.3 megapixel camera and got frustrated with the feature set. This 717 is so powerful and has so much going for it. I am a big fan of EVERYTHING Sony. I even have a Sony Computer and monitor. So, connection to my computer running windows XP was flawless. I installed the software provided and within about 7 mins I was downloading the images to the computer. I am a VERY happy customer and will continue to be.

BEWARE USB DRIVER PROBLEMS - PC CONNECTION.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you are NOT a techie /advanced PC user or need good product support from the vendor, beware of purchasing this camera. The USB drivers that Sony provide on the enclosed CD (for you to connect and transfer images to your PC) DO NOT work with Microsoft OS upgrades. (The small print in the manual confirms this.) They only work if you purchased a full version of the OS as opposed to an upgrade and when the upgrade is typically a third of the price of a full install, I expect many users will have upgraded. This wouldn't be a problem if Sony had good or even adequate support...which they don't. Their solution, after not performing basic fault finding, nor really identifying nor understanding the problem was to blame the PC manufacturer! If you are trying to get your DSC-F717 to transfer images to your PC and you are usig a Windows Me OS that was upgraded from Windows 98 or similar, you need three drivers: USBNTMAP.SYS, USBSTOR.SYS and USBMPHLP.PDR . You can find and download these on DRIVERGUIDE.com. Put them in your windows system folder and reinstall the device, it'll work. Sony, you might want to add this to your knowledge base so that you can actually HELP your customers when they call in future! SHAME great camera otherwise.

New Too The Sony Cyber Shot 717

Even Better Than the Original

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As much as I loved the F707, the 717 represents a real improvement -- better zoom ergonomics, histogram, faster start-up time and better color balance (more realistic greens and reds) and a hot-shoe flash adapter. Picture quality is still top-notch thanks to the Zeiss optics. Battery life even seems improved. Not a revolutionary improvement over the 707 but a very nice evolutionary step. You can't go wrong with this camera.

"Lens Worth the Price Alone"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Fanastic camera in every way. The Zeiss lens alone is worht the money. This camera is so flexible. The image quality is outstanding. The manual is very helpful and in no time at all you are taking wonderful pictures. I can't recommend this camera highly enough. Nothing at this price comes close.

Pleased!!!!(Service follow-up)

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I called Sony and set up the return of my 717 for repair of the focus issue recall. The call took less than a couple of minutes with a Sony rep. The shipment, repair, and return was on schedule (3 working days)and at no cost. The day after it was shipped I received an e-mail notifcation of the recall from Sony from having registered my purchase with them. Sony definately made me feel like I made the right decision buying this camera with the support they provided with this focus issue recall.

Outstanding Picture Quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Like the 707, the 717 has outstanding picture quality. So good, that if you accidently zoom from the optical zoom into the digital zoom, you will hardly notice. Sony did have a problem with the first run and has had to recall the cameras to apply a fix, but so did the 707. It has enough features to keep even the most advanced photographer happy. It is the only camera with which you can focus in pitch dark and still see what is out there. I have been very satisfied with my 707 and now my 717. It now has a hotshoe, that is nice.

Really Pleased with my choice

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Thanks to a robber, and my insurance company, I went from the F707 to the F717. Took me months of reading opinions and reviews of the F707 to chose that and loved the results. After it was stolen from my truck, I did some shopping again and chose the 717. Definitely not intuitive and I don't have a 16 year old to show me how it all works, but the resolution is great for my work and the aerial photo's are superb. Would, and have recommended it to many people. The flexing lense has been very helpful for my photo work.

beats hell out of the competition

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Unbelieveable image quality. The live histogram, tack sharp lens, ultra fast operation, and perfect metering make the Sony 717 the very best prosumer digicam to date.(all pro reviewers agree) It also accepts 3rd party flash. The colors are absolutely spot on. For less than $900.00 it also the best value.

" !"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Words can't come close to describing the priceless image quality captured by the DSC-F717. Had it for 2 weeks now and still learning how to take advantage of all the features. Best features are the Nightframing and Nightshot. People say it is awkward to hold, but I think it is great. Simply hang it around your neck and tilt the lcd upward. Comfortable and stable. My only issue is that the EVF is on the left side and if you use your left eye for aiming it is hard not to smear the LCD with your face. I haven't found much use for the EVF, however. Great product, snap one up and you won't be disapointed.

Pleased!!!!!!!!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just purchased this product and I'm still on a learning curve. I've moved up from a HP 315 PhotoSmart so it is with some disappointment to find out that Sony has just announced a recall on a focus issue for certain conditions for specific serial numbers. Check it out at dpreview.com or www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/news/dsc.html. At least it appears there won't be a hassle about having my camera fixed. I look forward to rating this camera again after a little more time and some experience with Sony's support on this issue.

Feature Packed!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: One good thing about the 717 and the 707 is the night shot function. The host of manual and special functions is also the cause of the high price for this product. However, what I still do not like is the handling of the DSC 717. My little finger just couldn't seem to find a place to hold the camera. And it feels naked. On the whole, at least the improve the one main sore point of the 707 which is the hotshoe so right now I can use my canon flash light without spending on a SONy flash that works only with this model. The other problem is the inavailiability of a high capacity memory stick that we can use with the 717. Imaging lugging along 4 sticks of 128MB memory sticks for a holiday trip which I can easily settle for a 1GB microdrive. Unless the memory stick issue clears up, no matter how good the SONY DSCs are,it will still be hampered by the memory stick issue. Oh yeah, this camera will look great with your CLIE :). Imaging looking at a virual album with the CLIE....yum...
