Spectacular camera for the price
Pros: Easy to use, 4X optical zoom, usable digital zoom, easy to adjust settings, great photo quality even in low light
Cons: limited manual settings, sometimes underexposes pictures although this is fixed by one button correction on Kodak software
The wheel on the back is used to quickly change setting modes. Automatic is good for general use. Sport Mode increases the shutter speed for action shots. While sitting in the upper deck at a Cubs game this year I got great pictures on the field using Sport Mode and digital zoom. I got some of pictures of the pitcher delivering a pitch; you can actually see the ball leaving his hand! Portrait Mode is generally for stills but I use it a lot for indoor shots, partcularly at school events like band concerts. It uses a wider aperature setting and gives a good picture in non-optimal lighting conditions without using a flash. There are several other modes as well.
Recently we used the camera for a 10 day trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. We got some amazing pictures (over 500 in all), including some wildlife shots with digital zoom. To activate digital zoom, just turn on the LCD screen, then hold down the zoom button. When digital zoom activiates, the level of magnification appears in the LCD window. The 4 mp resolution makes this acceptable for the standard 4X6, except at the very highest magnifications. We also recently used it in a dark night club and got terrific pictures. Normally you need to turn on the LCD screen. I usually leave it off to conserve battery power.
A couple of tips and shortcomings. There are no true manual settings. You can kind of fake it with the different modes and menu options. Even when focusing on distant objects the flash will go off (except in certain modes), so for these pictures (like band concerts), I manually turn the flash off. This really improves the pictures. There is a bit of a delay when shifting between modes, but little delay between pictures. The controls are easy to use and intuitive. Some indoor shots get underexposed, particularly in automatic mode. Using the "Enhance" button on the Easy Share software always fixes these. Otherwise pictures are well focused, well exposed, and colors are good.
Having the video is also handy (if a bit choppy).
In summary, this camera is an overachiever that will satisfy those looking for a good quality, reliable, point and shoot camera with lots of features, and who can live without true manual settings.
