"Simply a great camera!"
Pros: Sharp, clear images; lots of setting options
Cons: Manual is awkward; settings can be difficult to find
Summary: There may well be better cameras on the market in this price range, but the sheer adaptability of this camera has to put it near the top of the scale, and the price is very good. This is the camera that convinced me that a digital camera could compete, and even beat, film for clarity and image quality.
The cons are generally niggling, but they can be frustrating. There are so many buttons that it is sometimes difficult to get them set before the subject vanishes. I do a lot of outdoor/nature photography, and there are times when I have to settle for the auto settings just because I can't fiddle things fast enough. The manual is turgid, making for a slow and steep learning curve. But the quality of the shots more than makes up for these small hassles. And the speed of storage, as well as the ability to take shots rapidly, make the deal all the sweeter.
Serious amateurs and even many pros can buy this camera with a clear conscience; this is money well-spent.
One recommendation; buy the biggest CompactFlash card that you can. Memory is so cheap, now, that there is no reason not to get a 1 gig or larger card. You'll be very glad that you did.
