"An Outstanding Camera - Worth Every Penny"

by strive on April 23, 2005

Pros: Excellent image quality, fast startup, fast focusing, USB 2 connectivity, abundant options for creative control, outstanding performance in the fully automatic mode, great built in flash - no red eye!

Cons: I suppose if you are a professional photographer or someone with hands that are larger than a full sized gorilla, you will find something to critique.

Summary: I waited a long time for a camera to emerge in the marketplace like the Rebel XT. Before making my purchase, I examined every digital camera in the $600 to $1,500 price range. Until the Rebel XT came along, the clear choices for me were either the Nikon D70 or the Canon 20D. Both are great cameras: the D70 having an obvious price advantage of a $400 to $500 over the 20D and the 20D having an advantage in image quality and resolution. With price not being the primary issue for me and with subtle, esoteric performance nuances not likely to impress me, my main gripe with these cameras was their large form factors and weight.

Then came the Rebel XT. It offers astounding image quality, plenty of options for creative control, a small size and light-weight form factor that I had been waiting for in a DSLR and it's REALLY FAST! Start up is almost instantaneous, even if it goes into its sleep mode, just press on the shutter button and it's up and running (if only I could wake up that fast myself every morning). The auto focus is also lightning fast.

I am also thrilled with the quality of the photos I am taking with the built-in flash. Not only is the exposure quality great, but try as I may, I haven't even produced one picture with red-eye. Words cannot describe how much that impresses me. Red-eye just drives me nuts!

Having owned two other digital cameras over the past few years, I find myself in awe of my new Rebel XT. Given this camera's performance, size, price and Canon's reputation for producing quality products, the Rebel XT sets a new standard that will be hard to beat. Way to go Canon!!!

I was editing some wedding photos that I took yesterday and noticed a lot of red eye. I was using the on-camera flash. So, I can't agree with you on that point.
