"great camera. Lousy lens"
Pros: instant on. speed. intuitive.
Cons: The worst lens Canon could possibly have chosen
Summary: I love the camera but I really wish I had just gotten the body (without the kit lens). Do yourself a favor and research lenses before you buy. In a very exhaustive survey of several hundred lenses Canon's 18-55 was near the very bottom. Canon, Sigma and Tamron all have better choiced, depending on your shooting style.

Ogen's review creates the impression that he doesn't own either the camera or the lens and that he is relying on surveys and online information for his opinions about the equipment. I voted this reviw as "not helpful."

I am very interested in this camera. I have been shopping around both online and offline. Ogen's comment is simply VAGUE. No expelenation for his comment. There should have been details that are HELPFUL ! GET IT ?? HELPFUL!

Before I go out and buy the EOS digital Rrebel XT, does anyone have any idea if Canon is comingout with there 'new and improved' version any time soon? And should I just buy the body, and find a different lens?

I have been using the 350d for about 12 month now and found it to be Amazing nothing else touches it for the money

Anyone know about use of A-1 lenses on the EOS Rebel XT? Can't miss auto-focus if never had it.

I checked several sites and they don't back up your complaint. The 18-55 Canon lens compares very well to other Canon lenses. I have one and have never seen any difference in quality when compared to a Sigma 18-200 and a Tokina 12-24.

I was told that the lenses I have for my Canon AE1 SLR will fit and work on this camera. Anyone know if this is true?
Thanks

You mentioned an "exhaustive survey of several hundred lenses." Where can I find the results of this survey or other data on lens quality?
Thanks -
The light weight, expensive kit-lens with an appealing zoom range was irresitable. I wish I had consulted cnet first.
I've purchased several fixed and zoom lenses since and discovered how poorly the kit-lens performs. Even in 4 x 6 prints, one can see the mediocre sharpness of the kit-lens.
Read the reviews on cnet. -
What did you find in the exhaustive search for lens that would be your overall suggestion?
-
It is ok to alert readers about the kit lens being bad but it would be helpful if you would tell us why or provide a link that would help us determine the reason.
-
It's not at the top of the list for lenses (I didn't want to spend for a pro level lens), but it works terrific for everday shots and I don't have to switch to my zoom lens very frequently since its got a decent range to it. I'm just an amateur photographer and the Rebel XT's features and functionality are excellent.

While I agree the kit lense is not of Canon "L" quality, if you can work within its limits, it's a fine lense especially for the mere $100 in price difference and its low weight. Given the 18-55mm zoom range, a lense even from a 3rd party vendor will cost 3 times as much. The lense is not sharp wide open, but once stopped down 1 or 2 clicks is perfectly reasonable given adequate lighting. Since this lense is 18-55mm, most likely use will be for landscape, with adaquate lighting and small aperture that will come as a natural setting. So I don't see this as a problem at all unless this is the only lense you have. This lense is perfectly fine for wide angle day light landscape shots, and is of good quality if properly used!!
