"Difficult for amateurs to use"
Pros: Takes great pics in well lit areas, lots of modes to choose from, EXR mode takes great pics in most situations
Cons: No HD videos, menus and modes can be confusing and difficult to navigate, difficult to take pics in low light (if you use the auto modes)
Summary: We bought this camera because of the great reviews and the EXR function. We were going to Italy and knew our current camera wouldn't cut it.
Well, my mom's less expensive Canon Powershot took better pics!
I'm an amateur when it comes to photography so I only use the auto modes. My indoor pics and night pics are inconsistent, even using auto modes dedicated to party (indoor) and night time situations. These pictures frequently come out blurry or too dark.
I was unsuccessful taking pictures of anything in shadow, too. My mom's Canon, on the other hand, didn't darken the subject or over-expose subjects in backlit situations.
The camera also stopped registering pics on one of my memory cards. Less than 1G into the memory card, the camera started saying that the pics were not readable. Luckily we only lost about 15 pics before we noticed the problem. To be fair, it might have been an issue with the memory card.
This was a pricey camera but I think you need to know what you're doing in order to use it. For what I need, the Canon seems to be easier to use and more successful in the auto modes.
...And in case you're wondering, yes, I've read the manuals.

Agreed, Do Not compare this camera to Canon.... if you wanted higher quality, you should have bought a Canon!!

This camera was given to my mother-in-law and I have to agree with the original post. It took horrible pictures in the automatic mode (EXR). They were extremely noisy in normal indoor settings where Ive seen 10year old cameras do better. I was able to get better pictures out of it, but ive had a dslr for a few years and knew what to tweak. Even then the menus were very clumsy and confusing. Perhaps this camera will perform for someone who knows enough about photographic technical concepts and invests the time to become used to its controls... This unit, however, is going back to the store and I'm on here looking for a much more user friendly alternative for my MIL.
Also, in reply to dondon_26, I did not see a way to change the auto ISO maximum in the full auto EXR mode. You could do it do in other modes... but choosing between "high ISO, low noise", "high resolution" and "high dynamic range" was beyond the scope of my MIL's desire for a point and shoot camera. -
you cant compare this to canon LOL. this camera is a much better picture quality especially low lights, you should try to change the iso settings in auto or exr
