"Nice camera - but"
Pros: Nice feel, good set of features
Cons: Needs tweaking to get the best out of if
Summary: I have owned an S100fd for about two weeks. I was very excited to receive it and take it through its paces. The camera has a very substantial feel - great for getting nice stable pictures. It is very full featured with a lot of optional selections for the person who wants to digress from the full automatic mode. There are also a number of handy buttons that serve as shortcuts to selecting the most common settings. If you digress, be prepared to spend time learning and then remembering all of the options.
The default pictures are good but not excellent. The quality can be improved through manual settings. One thing that I found very troubling is that the default file format saves in 72dpi JPEG format. That is OK for pictures that you are going to be using online, however it is too low for good quality prints. There is a Fine mode but I not yet been able to try that (for reasons I will describe later).
It is easy to overshoot your flash on this camera. The picture will look better in the viewfinder as you frame the shot than they turn out when you use the flash. There is also a flash power setting that I have not yet been able to test.
I was pleased that the camera has a electronic viewfinder in addition to the LCD screen, however the electronic viewfinder (eyepiece) does not have focusing capability so you cannot tweak the eyepiece for your own particular vision needs.
Now the rest of the story:
I did find that the zoom lens was very sensitive to touch - when you turn the camera on, the zoom extends (as is expected) but if there is any pressure on it, such as an errant finger, the zoom will not extend and the camera will shut down. I didn't worry too much about this peculiarity however within about a week, the zoom lens stopped working altogether and now the camera displays a "zoom error" when you turn it on. The camera is now back at Fuji for repair - a 2-3 week process.
When I get the camera back I will continue my exploration and hope that I can find settings to turn this good camera into an excellent one.
I have high hopes!

I love mine, but have almost the opposite problem with my extended lens...its rather strong...when retracting, must move any finger away quickly becasue it sucks and catches the skin and...OUCH!

It doesn't sound like this reviewer knows the camera well enough to review it.
