"Great pictures on automatic; good for beginners or knowledgeable peop;e"
Pros: Better pictures than anything I borrowed. Face detection and other tech really help. Good for learning what all those settings are
Cons: none that I have found so far
Summary: I haven't had anything but a point and shoot since my Pentax was stolen about 16 years ago. Wellfocused, sharp pictures were my high priority, both at Middle School events and at the Historical Re-enactments I do.
I borrowed quite a few cameras over this year, and found I don't remember enough about the settings to want to jump into a high-end camera. I also found things I disliked (scale on that varied a lot) enough that I didn't want to buy quite a few cameras.
I took a chance, basec on reviews, and bought the Fuji. After a few weeks, I find I really like it. It takes really, really good photos under most conditions - those different settings of landscape, etc., really do their job. Face detection is the best piece of tech I have found in a camera! It hasn't messed up a shot yet, when I have used that button.
I have started to try the different manual settings, but my results have not been very good. The camera is doing a better job so far, but it is an easy way to re-introduce myself to them.
I won't be able to really analyze this camera until I have had it out over the many re-enactment and family events of the summer (when I will add to this if necessary), but I feel confident that this nice not-so-little camera will not disappoint me.

I own the Fuji S700 which was the model that was released before the S1000FD. The S700 gives me similar results to what the S1000 does in automatic mode and yes, if you don't know what you are doing in the manual control modes, it is easy to mess up photos. The scene modes do work pretty good with the S700 and I am sure the S1000 isn't much different. I would say that I have had similar experiences with my camera but honestly if you take the time to educate yourself on some of the basics of photography (aperture, shutter speed, tripod use, etc.) the Fuji "S" models can take some pretty good photos for the little bit that you pay for them. This is a great pre-SLR camera which doesn't surprise me as to why these types of cameras are known as "bridge" types.
