I bought the Fuji s602 in January of 2003. Love the features, picture quality, and fast auto focus. However, it broke down and overexposed everything in daylight after about 3 months. Since it was still under warantee, I wasn't too upset. However, I live in Phoenix, and guess what? In the 6th most populous city in the US, Fuji doesn't have ONE single authorized repair shop that deals with digital cameras. NONE. NADA. ZILCH. So now I have to PAY to ship it out of state and wait 2 to 6 weeks to have it repaired. They won't even refund the cost of shipping!! Since I have a newborn child, I'm very upset. Until they authorize more repair shops, I can't recommend anything by fuji.

My first Digital camera and maybe a bit to "automatic" for my taste, however nothing is perfect. The ONLY thing that I did NOT like with this one was the price-tag!!! It was a bit too pricy. Another thing might be that (sometimes) you can get jagged edges on some shots. However besides this I really have no complaints. Among the things I like is that you can use normal AA batteries with it, and I also like the fact that I can put in a 1GB drive to save all my shots. The drive has never even been half filled after a whole evening of party pictures..... over all yes, good stuff and satisfied.

Was rather disappointed first, when all the pictures I took with my new fuji (my fourth digital) were blurred, even in auto-mode. then I found out I had unintentionally switched the focus on "Manual". No picture-quaility problems ever since. Shot several thousand pictures with the camera and the yield is at least as good as with the slrs I used for over tirty years now. Altough I used the camera under many variuos conditions in- and out-door I did not encounter any photographic problem with my fuji, that an experienced photographer (who has read the manual

could not overcome. Even the black-and white-pictures are superb. I work my pictures with paint-shop-pro and have them printed at a professional lab, many blown up to 30x45 cm. No problems, excellent colours. Compared photos from my Fuji with some taken with a 16mm Leica in the studio and outdoors under identical conditions. You need a good lens to find the differences on the printouts. Summary: A very good camera, once you know, how to use it. The better a camera gets, the more the result depend on the person behind it.

The camera movie quality blew me away. Nobody believed the video came from a digital camera. The images are sharp. The digital zoom is clean. Tons of features. Lots of options for setup. The colors are sharp and looks great when printed to 5x7. My brother has a Sony & so does my dad. All 3 of us took the same pictures at the zoo. The Fuji had better contrast & color saturations plus the batteries out lasted my dad's Sony and we shot all day. I have 2 128MB card in the camera, Smartmedia & Compact Flash. The big draw back is the camera has trouble focusing in low light, have to maually focus. Very minor flaw is the numbers restart when the files are deleted, but that is fixed when you use Fuji software to save the pictures.

This camera has the feel of a 35mm without the weight. Photographs have been excellent and the B7W features as well as the abilkity to use off-camera flash. I have used this with studio lighting and have found it an excellent performer. I do wish it has a battery pack available so I could use this for long periods of time. A few seconds notice before the camera batteries die is very inconvienient especially when you have a flow going. I first used it as a backup to check the posing and background on portriature, but began to use it in place. Really enjoy the versatility of such a small but excellent camera. Just love the feel of the camera and the positioning of controls.

The Best you can haveby - March 9, 2003

This is the best camera you can get on the market (with less than $1000) I was using a Minolta SLR before, and those expensive bodies, lens and flash guns (and Minolta don't have digital SLRs) has keep me back from going to digital. But S602 is different, the lens are exceptionally good, comparable with those high quality SLR lens with f2.8 at any focal length, start up is a bit slow but acceptable. I have tried Cancon G-2 and G-3 and Sony F717, but i found S602 looks and handles more like a professional camera than Canon and is easier to use then Sony with odd placed control (the zoom is on left hand side, force me to use the camera with both of my hand?!) The best thing is the quality of picture, sharp and bright. I don't know how much credit go to the lens and the super CCD. I have to take boring pictues of rocks to use in lectures, the colour is just stunning with so much detail, and noise level, which i have heard from other digital users, are low even with ISO 1600 setting. (YES Sony's noice level is NOT acceptable in slow shutter speed, it looks like i captured it somewhere rather than i took it) The only drawbacks will be its twin slot for CFII and SM, I don't know why Fuji did not make it triple for xD as well (like the Olympus C5050), and the camera drains battery faster than i expected - 4 fully charged 2000mA takes only 60 pictures rather than 200 on the cnet review, but it use AA size so it doesn't really matter, i can bring as many batteries as i want. The 0.8x wide angle converter is a bit disappointed - a 0.6x or 0.75x will made the camera really all-rounded.

I was on an Olympus C2040Zoom, with all new cameras on 4,5 mega pix. i decide to buy a new one. I have to choose between Fuji S602, Olympus C720U, Sont DCS85 and Canon G2. I have gone for s602, for its great capability. YES, the 6M mode is no good, but take a look at fine mode in 3M, we get extremely good quality pictures, better than that of Olympus or Sony. I believe this is because Fuji has a lower compress ratio for jpg. But I will also say the lends are good, bright , sharp, it is the camera that have minor problem as i compare with Olympus/Sony/Canon, it tend to over exposure the picture, even i have already adjust to -2/3EV, the tone didnt come out as what i expect. But it is the detail of the picture that counts isnt it, you can use Photoshop to adjust whatever tone you want! By the way, the camera is quick, and AA battery adds flexibiliy (you can get it anywhere) I m doing ecology and i often have to go on field trip where i could not find a mains for days, but i can bring as much AA as i want. Olympus are just tooo slow, trust me i know it so well (i have been using for 3years), sony is quicker than canon, which catch up with Fuji. it is the smart media + Compact flash dual slot attracts me. As many of you recognize, SM is fading out of the market, and you can pick up a 128mb with affordable price! then you have the slot for CF, so no worries!

This is my first digital camera and I am not even close to being professional. But I just returned from Myanmar (Burma), printed some A4 size photos on my Epson 830 and I can't believe the result. I've hung them in my office and people's first reactions tend to be that I must have bought the photos, and then I mention they're digital and people look in disbelief. The camera has lots of features, but I find the auto mode fairly idiot-proof (which I definitely need). Colors are vibrant, but natural. For those people who say the colors are off or the focus is bad, I've got more than 400 pics from last week telling me I made the right choice. One major complaint (if Fuji reads this stuff) is the lack of a battery meter. I don't like having to always bring an extra set of batteries since the camera gives me about a 30 second heads up when the batteries are dead. PLEASE fix this (a software upgrade would be nice).

I have been looking for a good quality digital camera that operates and feels like the Nikon SLRs I have been using over the years, and not the typical point and shoot PHD(Press here dummy) cameras. I have found this camera to take great pics, good colors and sharp. I like the ability to use both the Microdrive and Smartmedia cards at the same time, and the ability to attach an external flash. Now if they would just put a socket for an external flash and cable release, it would do it all. As it will do everything automatic, I like the ability to take control of the focus, lens and shutter settings, and the macro ability is something you rarely find in a camera in its price range. I wish it had a real viewfinder, instead of the LCD, for I find them sometimes hard to see in bright daylight, but overall, this is ONE AWESOME camera. The only way to get everything is fork out thoushands for one of those digital SLRS.

Great Camara but not for beginnerby - February 7, 2003

This camara is great. Sharp and Clear picture. 35mm-200mm lens. Can shot great perspective picture. Others compact camara can't do like this. I read many bad comments about blur picture from this camara. The reason are from your hand (not still) or wrong use. One tip for beginner who want to take sharp clear picture from front to background (like other compact small lens camaras). Use Aperture priority AE mode. Set to f/8-f/11 (outdoor and not zoom) if possible, use tripod. Your picture will beat all compact camaras in the market for sure. For beginner, try to learn about camara world and you will take great picture from this camara. One more thing, if your picture is sharp clear at focus point, but blur at other. This is a good of this camara (other compacts can't do). mid to pro level want to take this kind of picture in many shots. Understand this. This is a great camara. I guarantee.

Fuji in NJ sent me back a different camera. Not a new one, but one that had been repaired. It was a hassle and I was without my camera for about six weeks. Excellent choice for serious amateurby - January 15, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
The finepix 602 is an excellent choice for the serious amateur. Although not as many "megapixels" as some of its competitors, the 602 provides good to excellent 3 meg image quality. The 6x zoom lens (35 to 210mm equivalent) is a nice range, however the amount of distortion at zoom and wide angle, somewhat noticeable when straight lines of buildings or objects, start to curve, is a little disconcerting. Where this camera really rocks is its SLR like features. It offers all sorts of modes like full manual, aperture, shutter speed priority, as well as scenes like sports, scenery, portrait, night scene, etc. Other interesting features are pretty good video capability, multiple exposure, five frame per second continuous shooting, ISO settings from 200 to 1600 (great for indoors under flourescent) and a very strong flash. The camera uses standard AA rechargeables, either compact flash or smartmedia. I use a microdrive which allows me 840 pictures at 3 meg fine jpeg resolution - no worry about running out of media! Basically this camera requires weeks if not months to explore its potential. Another nice feature of this camera is the shutter lag, although not quite up to a modern SLR, is very fast, only matched by very expensive digital SLR's. Its shot to shot time is pretty good too. The provided software is okay. The finepix viewer allows one to browse thumbnails and weed out bad shots, as well as create a slide show. The software displays the shot's aperture and shutter speed, but unfortunately not the ISO setting used. There's Arcsoft studio to fix up your photos and do cropping, but I'm sure there's better software out there. Also Videoimpressions lets you edit movies. Although not the most amazing software either, at least you can do some basic editing and titling. I can record up to 30 minutes of low resolution video using my microdrive, so I plan to put that feature to good use. Also Fuji has a website that allows you to post your photos there, crop them a bit, and then request a print (up to 8 x 10). Their prices are a little higher than SNAPFISH.com, but I plan to compare the print quality between the two. My hope is Fuji will do a better job printing digital images off a Fuji camera. Enough of all this. If your looking for a point and shoot megapixel blaster, this is not the camera for you. But if your a serious amateur who really enjoys wringing out the advanced features from a camera, this camera will keep you grinning ear to ear for some time to come. One last point... The manual is fairly extensive, but at some times leaves you scratching your head to find the features in the camera. Luckily, there's some learning curve but within a few hours of handling you will have mastered most of the functions. If they could only write a manual as good as Minolta does (sigh).

I decided to buy this camera based on its superb features and lens capabilities, but this unit disappoints in image quality. Many shots are blurred to the point that they are indistinguishable. This happens in any mode and in all light situations. I have missed many an important shot because of this. This situation seems somewhat erratic and I believe is due to the autofocus system's slowness to respond to what it "views". It is such a shame because the overall feel and build quality are very, very good. When coupled with a large sized memory card it's capacity is enormous and the battery life is pretty good. This camera above all others in its price range felt like a 'pro' unit. I must say however that when the shots are not blurred, the image quality is as good as any 4mp camera I have seen. All I can say is do your homework and check this camera out closely BEFORE you buy it.

A brilliant move to digital from heavy 35mm kit.by - January 14, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I have owned this camera for about eight months, having spent a lifetime with 35mm SLR kit. I found this getting too cumbersome to carry around. The Fuji was a shot in the dark for me, but it has proved to be excellent in every way. The quality of shots are outstanding - easily good enough for cropping and enlargement. Coupl,ed with my Epson 1650 scanner and Photo 890 printer I am creating better photos than I have for years. First class. The only weak spot is the harsh shadow cast by the onboard flash - but the camera accepts external flash as long as the flash has its own metering capability, which most do. That will be my next purchase so I can get back to using bounce flash.

Bought the Camera for around $500, given the price I don't believe one can justify paying $200 more for the G3. Technically the G3 has better picture but for 99% of us this doesn't matter. Feature set of this camera per cost/quality isn't matched by ANYONE.

from reviewers advice...I bought S602 as a second camera and had it 5 days now.....I regretted. I still have my older, slow, out of date Epson 3000Z...but it gave me thousands of great pictures when I pair it with an external flash Canon 380EX. I had to admid...this S602 is a fast camera, zoom, manual focus ring, functions and especially the marco mode is great....but the skin color tone is not as good as the my other Epson 3000Z. That was all I now realized that I really care of. Anyone wanna trade???

The digital camera that acts most like a film cameraby - January 8, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
This camera feels so much like holding my old SLR film cameras that I wanted one the first time I picked one up. Having used it for about a month now, I am even more impressed. I find the quality of the images to be excellent. What sets this apart from similar cameras is the position of the on-camera lens (higher and directly over the lens), the ability to use an external flash, and its very good automatic white balance. To get the best out of this camera, you do need to learn how to use its features, but it is well worth the effort.

A Serious Point & Shootby - January 6, 2003
Pros:

Review:
We returned the FinePix 3800 that we originally choose and got the 602 after spending over a hour in Ritz handling various digi's. Picked the 602 due to its 6x optical zoom (which the 3800 had) and it's outstanding picture quality. Yes, it's about twice the price and is into the middle tier, but a camera that we can grow into and the Super CCD will be all the resolution all but pro's will ever need. What blew us away was the salesman's test shots of close ups of my son's eye at a couple centimeters away. Also nearly dark images inside a cabinet without the flash that were focused and visible. He also placed the lens on the store carpet at an angle and took a pic; then he showed us on the LCD the ability to zoom in until we could see the individually colored fibers. It was quite impressive. We've been playing with it the last two days and the basic controls are easy enough to figure out. It will take some serious practice to make use of all the features and fully utilize it however. I look forward to getting deeply into the features and digital photography overall.

Mega features vs megapixels. The advantage of this camera is the ability to manually adjust apeture and shutter speed. Also allows you to change ASA/ISO settings for availble light photos. Hot shoe flash mount increases flexibility for flash photography. If you are a more serious photographer, this is your camera. If you want to do snap shots only, look for something less expensive

this camera should not even be compared to a 3 megapixel camera cause it kicks all there butts. I have made tightly cropped 8x10 images on my dye sub printer that is gorgeous. The cnet review stinks since it says that it has a low native resolution. What does matter is that the 6 megapixel interpolation workes. I have a Fuji S1 Pro which has the same chip as the 602 and have made 4 foot by 6 foot image abbeit run thruogh genuine fractal that compares with my hasselblad images.

I bought my first Fugi 35mm SLR back in the early 80's and am thoroughly impressed with the company's transition to the digital image age. In a word, the S602 is smokin'! Features galore, excellent zooming quality, superior flash range, and Fugi's EBC optics have made for some of the best pictures I've ever taken...and that was before I realized I didn't have the camera set on 3 MP resolution! I relied on CNET's user ratings before I purchased this camera and am glad I did. Now I'm delighted to add my endorsement for this product. A few thoughts if you're in the market to buy: 1) Don't overpay. You should be able to buy this camera on-line for around $500 + s/h. But make sure you get a U.S. model with U.S. warranty! 2) buy yourself a couple of sets of NiMH AA batteries (camera uses 4) and 128 meg CF memory cards at the same time. 3) Make sure you use a photo printer (and paper) that will due the image quality justice (I'm using a Cannon S820). Buy, shoot and enjoy!

I have been using the S602 for two months now, in both home and industrial applications. As a Nikon FM and 6006 user, I have found this camera to be a good choice for those used to SLRs. I note elfenstar complaining about autofocus going for the background when taking shots of two people- the technique is to point at one of them, press the shutter half way to focus, then frame the shot. The focus stays locked, and the shutter delay will also be very short when pressing the rest of the way to snap the picture. I also notice William Hahn complaining of pictures being consistently blurred in auto mode.. I think you should watch the shutter speed on the display, and especially the hand icon that appears- that is warning that slow shutter speed will make any hand shake a problem. Use the flash, tripod, or brace yourself against something for these slow speeds. Also, try higher ISO settings in the Program Mode. As with film, high ISO means more noise so there is a trade off, but I find the 400 setting picks up the shutter and is still quite clean

The finepix S602 may not have the resolutions of most of the other digital cameras in the market, how ever it does make up for it with incredible features (from macro's at 1cm away to 6x optical zoom), long lasting battery life, and little lag. Together with the adapter with which a telephoto or wide-angle lens can be attached it give whole range of features which no other camera can seem to match up to!! I have only have 2 problems with the autofocus, for one it's bad in low light conditions, and the other problem is that if head shots are taken of 2 people (or any other even number of people), sometimes the autofocus focuses on the background behind them causing blurring of the faces. However, other than these and which can be remedied by manually focusing, i can't see any reason why this digicam can't hold its own against any other prosumer camera out there. As far as I'm concerned, to get a better camera would mean getting a proper digital SLR!!!

I bought the camera as a gift for my wife, an amateur photographer. She vowed she would never switch from 35MM to digital and now she will not put the camera down. I had a chance to play with the video/audio recorder and was impressed. A friend of mine just bought a Canon with video capability that does not compare to the Fuji S602. The difference is like comparing the special effects in Jaws to that of the Matrix... it's that good! The grip is a little bit big but my wife has no problems handling the camera. It may seem too big if you have tiny/childlike hands. Downloading/editing pictures is easy and fast. I like the way the software turns your camera into a virtual drive to view pictures. Three very minor downsides- 1. I hate QuickTime and that is what comes with the software package. It does not include a good image editor (thank goodness I had one) and constantly reminds me to update to QT5. 2. Unplugging the camera from the machine is tedious but not complicated. Because the software turns your camera into a virtual drive you must disconnect the device from your machine at the operating system level before turning the camera off or unplugging it. (It's kind of like disconnecting a PCMCIA card from a laptop). and 3. It's hard to find a power adapter for the camera. I've looked at Best Buy, Comp USA, and Circuit City and have not been able to find the 5V power adapter. I've seen many 3V adapters for other Fuji cameras but I'm still looking. In any case, this camera is highly recommended by wife and me.

Fuji S602 Well I have had this outstanding camera for three weeks and my only complaint is the focus and viewing ability in low light situations could be better. I was aware of this before my purchase. Beyond that I don?t think there is anything else to complain about on this unit. A lot of folks are saying 4 & 5 megapixel cameras are superior to cameras offering 3.1 megapixels. Maybe I have a better printer than everyone else but I get great, I mean ?Great? 8x10?s from this camera and I wouldn?t want larger files than what this camera produces. Actually I have been using the 1 Megapixel Fine setting to get ?Photo Shop? quality 5 x 7 pictures. This being my second Digital camera purchase I already have experience using editing software for my pictures but with the output of this camera I have hardly opened PSP or PhotoImpact 8 to do any editing. The pictures are just that good, really. When I bought my S602 three weeks ago I had found an Internet price of $449 and my local Staples price matched that and gave me 10% of the difference. What I?m saying is don?t pay the $699 price that you see in places like Circuit City, Staples, and Best Buy. Deal with Staples using their Price Match Guarantee. As for the camera itself this camera has the feel of an expensive camera and I guess even $449 is a lot of money but when you learn the features of this unit you will know you got you money?s worth. The auto setting will work for 90% of your shots but you have full manual control for those unique photo opportunities. Clearly the best feature of this camera is the 35 x 210 Zoom but you have to check out the Scene Position feature for Portrait, Landscape, Sports shots and such. The camera does an outstanding job when using this feature. Well enough for now, I gotta go play with this phenomenal camera. Hey it?s digital so there?s no cost other than recharging my batteries. Oh yea I did get a 256 PNY Compact Flash Card for this baby. Enjoy your Fuji S602 RWR

All I've used in the past are EPSON'S. I just sold my 3100Z and got a great deal on a new FUJI S602Z ($500.00) and it is an AWESOME camera! The ONLY problem I have with it is that it comes with only a 16 MB Flash Mem card, and I added a 1GB IBM MicroDrive, (which it was able to take, fortunately!). SSO...for a thousand bucks for all, I have a GREAT digital camera with really good 15 minute at a time videos...perfect for the web (at 360 res & 30fps.). The 15 sec. manual exposure time is the best I've seen on a digital camera. For someone that LOVES shooting sky scenes and various Northern Lights shots, it's almost perfect. MUCH better than my EPSON 3100Z, which doubled their 850Z with 8 seconds. Learning the camera isn't as easy, and you can hear the shutter changing on the movie shots (I meant to say b4), but overall, an excellent digital camera (+++ CAM) for the buckola's!

Having shot with the 602zoom in studio environment, I am pleased with results! I only shot in the 3.1 MP mode, but got good to excellent detail from an 8 x 10. Color (as is usually the case with Fuji) was EXCELLENT ! I would recommend white balancing with a Gretag Macbeth Color Checker, however. While the white balance Auto feature is pretty good---Excellent in low-light conditions----most of the other WB's are a little lacking. One other thing is that you must go manual in the 6 MP mode, but in studio environments that shouldn't be a prob! If you want a Digital to learn with BEFORE you go bigtime, I would say this is a good one. I have shot with the Kodak 760 DCS pro, so I know where I'm coming from. You'll know right away after using the 602 if you want to invest in digital for the future!

Fast shutter, very little lag.by - December 14, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I am most impressed with the lack of shutter lag, meaning when I press the button - there is very little time between pressing the shutter button and the picture actually being taken. Plus - it is in my experience a battery miser. I took over 250 pictures using 4 Panasonic Digital Alkaline batteries while using the main LCD. I bought the accessory that lets me use standard 52mm filters and my fisheye adapter - very sweet having a fisheye on a digital. The 6mp (interpolated) stack up against the 4 & 5mp cameras that I have seen and used, quality of the picture is overall very good. The flash is a little weak, but since the camera has hotshoe - I will be using standard external flash. I really like this camera and the features. With the fast response of the autofocus and the shutter - I am not taking blurry pictures anymore. I had an Olympus D40 and 50% of pictures were blurry because the shutter response was very slow and I also missed many shots because the recycle time between shots very slow. The Finepix S602 fixed all that for me.

I love the 6x zoom and macro modes. I will probably use "auto" 99% of the time but I like having multiple exposure options there. I've used a Canon A-1 & AE-1 for 20 years & plan to replace them with the Fuji. Its only drawback is size- not a pocket cam, but much smaller and lighter than any 35mm SLR.

I also got the IBM microdrive, and I'm still not used to the fact that I can sit down and film, with sound, a very respectable VGA movie for Half An Hour!! The downloads are fast, the picture-to-picture time is short, the zoom is great, the EVF is top-notch, the controls are painfully intuitive. It's just an amazing piece of machinery. The Fuji feels like a camera, with all the controls in convenient, logical positions. In a short amount of time you can do nearly everything without taking you eye away from the EVF, which is actually big enough to look through. I was disappointed with the Minolta, especially with all the cnet accolades; I am impressed with the Fuji.

Took it out of the box, read the quick start guide, and in ten minutes had some great pics in the auto mode using the factory defaults. Having used high-end 35mm SLR's, I looked for a digital camera that could do all the things that make photography exciting. The 6X optical and 4.4 digital zoom lens is equal to a 35 mm-210 mm on a 35mm camera. Having two media slots, using 4 AA batteries, a hot shoe and built-in flash, 2 graet macro modes, and much, much more, make this a great camera. I keep re-reading the excellant manual and then try out the some of the many features such as adjusting the flash output for macros and special effects. And 30 minutes of video, with sound, thrown in for good measure. F2.8-F11 in 1/3EV steps, 15 sec. to 1/10,000 shutter speed gives you an idea of the creative control this camera can give you. I purchased the 602 a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I did this after having purchased the Nikon D100 and the Fuji S2 Pro and having gotten accustomed to the high levels of quality with those two cameras. I figured that the 602 would serve in the point and shoot role. Although I love the design of the camera - in particular the bright viewfinder and superb full-frame video, I am disappointed at the overall picture quality taken in the 6 MP interpolation mode. I see various artifacts, jagged edges, etc., in the photos and unfortunately, they can't even come close to the true 6 MP cameras that I've been accustomed to. I plan on keeping the camera, but the $699 price paid in retrospect, is far too much for this camera. $349 - $399 maybe, but now-a-days, this camera has been far outclassed by other 4 and 5 megapixel units in picture quality and who cost less! My advice is to buy only if you are looking for a point and shoot camera - and it it's offered below $600. If you want the best quality for the money, you may want to hold off and invest in either the new Canon G3 or the Nikon Coolpix series of cameras.

I have owned a new Fuji FinePix 602Z camera for 3 weeks now and am satisfied I got a good deal at $540.00 + s/h. This camera has all the auto point-and-shoot qualities my wife needs while providing the selected manual qualites I need. My previous Canon AE-1 35mm film camera is getting a run for it's money compared to the Fuji FinePix 602 digital. The semi-manual and full manual modes are very similar, and I can use my existing external 35mm flash on the 602's hot shoe. The controls are well placed and it 'feels' like a 35mm body. The addition of glass optics and the choice of manual or auto-focus is great. The macro and supermacro modes do take a bit of practice to focus clearly, but the LCD display can be set to aid in this respect with a focusing 'zoom' mode. The ability to choose the shooting viewfinder is very useful to us old 35mm shooters. I prefer composing a shot in the eyepiece viewfinder, but previewing in the LCD. This gives it a better 'feel' and also is best when shooting in bright light (which tends to washout the LCD display). I'd have to say that if you would like to own a true digital SLR, but can't justify the $2,000.00+ pricetag, then consider the Fuji FinePix 602Z, you'll be happy for some time to come.

G-2 has bad Macro Capabilities, so I decided to get the S602. I have read a lot of reviews and looked at a lot of pictures from the 602. I also printed many of them out. I decided to get the camera from a local retailer to try it out. Well, after 3 days I gave up and took it back. I played with every setting on it trying to get a perfect picture, and the camera can't do it. The focus on the foreground part of the pictures are OK, but the background parts of the pictures are a wash-out. There is just no "fine" detail to the images from this camera. There are some great reviews on the net from the pros that also point this out. I took it back and got a great deal on an Olympus C-4040. I dont mind loosing the 6 x zoom to a 3x zoom since the picture quality and camera features blow away the S602.

The 602 is a beautifully made camera. Good fun to use, easy to handle and easy to master. I have found the images it produces better, in many ways, than 35 mm. This was a complete surprise, as I was a bit sceptical about about the capabillity of digital cameras prior to buying the Fuji. Trouble is, I now have too many images!

I'm only a novice when it comes to taking pics, but take a look at my photo gallery at http://www.pbase.com/ozdick/usa_trip_2002 These are unedited photos and give you a good idea of the kind of quality you can expect. Colours are sharp and vibrant, focussing was excellent and noise was minimal. I'd recommend using P(rogram) mode over Auto - it's basically the same thing, but allows you to change more options.

I have used different digital cameras trying to find the right one for me.The S602 its the perfect package for anybody looking for good quality for a reasonable price. If you are thinking of buying a Cannon G2 (like I was) be realistic and ask yourself the following questions: 1st- How many High megapixel pictures will you be taking? probably 90% of your pictures will be 1 - 3 megapixels. 2nd- What's more important to you, Megapixels or Zoom capabilities? the S602 leaves the G2 in the dust. 3rd- Macros - Pictures at close range are incredible with the S602, while closeup pictures with G2 are very poor. 4th- How much are you willing to spend? I bought mine New for $524.00, even cheaper than ebay. The only bad things I have to say about the S602 is that it that it did not come with rechargeable batteries and it doesn't have the swivel screen as the G2.

While the 602 still isn't where I want to be with a digital camera it is the best for the money on the market. I get to test these things for my IT department and have tried every top rated camera that has come along and believe me this is the best so far. If I have to rate one thing besides overall picture quality as a key for this camera it is the lack of lag time between shots. I finally feel like I have a real camera in my mands instead of a toy experiment. The burst modes are great also. The telephoto lens, the use of multiple cards, the use of a standard battery size all contribute to making this the most wonderful digital camera I have use. Now if they could only offer this in a 4 or 5 megapixel . . .

Versatile, built like a rock, fast and responsive with a feature set unequaled in the prosumer class at a great price (online, at least). The interpolated 3.1 MP at 6MP blows up to 8x10 beautifully and the colors are some of the best out there...How this didn't get a 9 out of 10 is beyond me. For shooting action, macro and overall fun this is a tremendous camera.

Great Pictures -- Great Priceby - October 3, 2002
Pros:

Though a little on the heavy side, I like using "AA" NimH batteries, with a 1 hour charger as an accessory. And if you're SOL, you can always get std. batteries as back-up. Auto features are great, easy to use -- however, with low light you may be challenged. Manual features can be cumbersome -- but with practice, this'll be overcome. One semi-complaint: The low-battery indicator comes on when you only have a few pictures left, or when it's about to go out. Why not have a continuous battery status available????

My Maxxum 9 will see use for 11x14sby - September 30, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
Lovely camera... has almost all the features my Maxxum 9 has and some to boot. Very logical, easy to use menu selections, light, and easy to handle. Don't bother with the 6mb .tif option (the 6mb Hi option, which produces a 17mb file), the 6mb Fine (2.3mb file) produces the same resolution and quality when you save it on disk as a tif file, and the software supplied does a very nice job doing that. (They both turn out a 17mb tif file, but doing it in the camera takes forever and just takes up space.) Also, don't get sucked in by BuyDigital's offer of the "special lens pack". I should have known better... the add-on wide-angle and tele "lenses" aren't worth nearly the price they suck you into. Figuring I was going to have to take the tif-quality save option to get what I wanted, I was also ready to buy a 10gb MindStore. After a lot of figuring and math I discovered that the 1gb MicroDrive would hold the equivalent of 12 rolls of 36-shot film with image quality suitable for 8x10s before it filled up. I don't need the MindStore just yet! Cons are: doesn't auto-focus well in low light and you have to get used to a pixellated viewfinder. Small potatoes!

Cnet.com rated this camera at 8/0 and it is editor's choice. And rightly it should be. Although I am an above average photographer, my pictures from my Europe shots are extremely good. The settings makes it easy to give postcards quality prints (i took my files to be processed at Kodak Paper Digital Photolab). Extremely pleased with the results. Battery life is very very good (after I bought NiMH batteries which does not come with the camera). The batteries lasted throughout any 1 day shots I had in Europe (repeated on and off the cameras and using the LCD screen. Playback saps the battery) Interested to see the results please email me. Will pass small files good for email but the screen can show how good the camera is.

The new chip gives the best quality in its range, other 3MP cams are just that, the Fuji has those octagonal pix that dominate the field. You have to see it to understand what a great camera this is. I am a pro photographer and have been using equipment from Nikon, Canon, Car Zeiss, medium and large format. You name it, I've probably used it on a job. I have used this on several, and the pleasantly surprised looks on clients faces have allowed me to not have to lug fifty pounds of film camera gear around as much. This camera will satisfy.

I've taken well over a 1000 pictures so far and only a small handfull were blurry or the picture didn't look good.

This camera was a gift from my friend and I think it was the best gift I have ever recieved. Family Man's Best Betby - September 13, 2002
Pros:

Review:
We just returned from a one-week camping trip. We used the S602 to take landscape and family photos, as well as movies of the kids. (Got some great macro shots of black flies biting me at Mono Lake...) Now we are filling our walls with sharp, clear, noiseless, color-perfect 8x10 photos from the trip. The five-shot feature is excellent for self-timed family portraits when you have a reluctant squirmer. (Caught him smiling in the last frame!) Wish it had a firewire connection, but with a flash connection for the 1G Microdrive (a must), the throughput is quite fast. As some professional reviewers have pointed out, the images look "soft" at actual resolution in editing programs, but this softness translates to great prints. Adding a UV filter to protect the lense is a bulky proposition - the only letdown that I can think of.

You won't regret with this cameraby - September 12, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I choose this camera instead of Cannon G2. Why would anyone go from a 4MP camera to one with 3MP? There are quite a few reasons #The 3MP images that this camera produces are nearly the same or may be G2 is a little bit better quality. #The movide mode is incredible, makes the HQ 30 fps in 640x480. As far as I know there is no digital camera with this feature until now. #Super macro mode is exceptional - could never get this close up before #Images in normal indoor lighting conditions are superb #Can take shots in complete darkness with IS01600 and manual mode of 15secs - my jaw dropped after I took my first photo. #Speed - this baby starts up almost as fast as I can turn it on. G2 in comparison seems to take forever - I often missed shots because of this 7) AF/AE is exceptionally quick - I can basically press and shoot and the photo gets taken. #Price - the amount of features and quality of this camera, make this an exceptional buy #6x optical, 4.4 digital zoom let's you capture the action, no matter how far away. I took a series of shots of a stork. In the first pic, the stork is a dot, with the 6x optical you can see it is now a stork, with the 4.4 optical the stork fills the screen #No real quality loss with digital zoom. The digital zoom is stepped, so that at 6mp, there is no digital zoom, 3MP offers 1.2 dig zoom, down to 640x480 where full 4.4 dig zoom is available. That means the camera is actually using 6MP mode at full zoom in any resolution, and then reducing the size to create 640x480. So it drops pixels, not adds them #The focus check button is excellent allowing you to zoom in on your subject to get razor sharp focusing #This baby use 4 AA NiMH rechargable battery which is very economical and it can last 300 shots. It is ture and I get it without any hassle. (Great advantage over G2 in my opinion) #If you want to use, you can use any third-party external flash. If I buy Canon G2 I have to spend a lot for it. #It hand grip and SLR like focusing ring give me very satisfy. #If you are not printing larger than 8X10" 3MP is not a problem compare to Canon G2 4MP. Even if you want to you can use 6MP interpolation.

Stunning results, great colour rendition, masses of control and 5 star features makes this a great buy in anybody's language. Including a 64Mb storage media in the off the shelf package should be considered for sucha high spec outfit. Even in low light conditions performs great. All the controls are easily accessable in all shooting conditions with a sensible complementation on the software side. The results I get out of this camera far out weighs what I am used to getting from my older high spec 35mm system.

Best overall value!!! No need to buy the expensive Nikon name. Fuji makes an awesome camera. Beautiful color reproduction. Don't kid yourself, even if you bought a 5 MP camera, you would hardly, if ever, take a file size that large. You can't tell the difference between a 2MP or a 5 MP photo on your computer screen, from a projector or in emails. Only if you PRINT a lot of 8x10's. If that's the case, then switch to the 6 MP option. Fuji's CCD technology works and the photos look terrific. I'm using this camera for intra-oral photos and they look great in Powerpoint. The grip design allows for one handed photos which I love. The only thing that would be nice would be a dedicated hotshoe because I have to use manual settings with the Vivitar 5000 ringflash attached. Bottom line, this camera is very easy to use, has useful features and takes excellent photos. The S601 takes the same quality photos if you want a smaller camera.
